Here's some material from the POTTER CDROM. I checked for
references to ORAN, OREN, ORIN, ORREN, and ORRIN, and these appeared to be the
only ones that fit the dates given. Maybe the address for Mr. & Mrs. John
R. Korsedal is still valid? Write them a letter - they might have progressed in
tracing Orrin's ancestry, and you might have other information to swap.
[see my post "LIST OF SOURCES - POTTER" for reference]
[my comments in square brackets]

Found in "Potter Profiles" vol.1, p.41:
1. Orrin POTTER, b. 1793/1805 U.S., d. 1862/3, Niagara, Lincoln,

ii. Susannah POTTER, age 5 in 1861, b. Ontario
iii. Francis POTTER, age 2 in 1861, b. Ontario

[Unfortunately, the POTTER CDROM seems to be missing vol.1 p.42 of
"Potter Profiles", which is the beginning of this entry!]
The next census of 1871 lists the same members of the family at the
same location with the exception of Orrin. I have reason to believe he died
around 1861 - 1863. Mary Ann is shown as being a widow and Catherine Boice is
now listed as being blind.
There are so many unanswered questions. First, when and where was
Orrin Born? Who were his parents? And exactly when did he die? When and where
did he wed his first wife? Who was she, who were his daughters? What happened
to them? Who was his second wife Mary Ann and when and where did he marry her?
What became of Orrins daughter Susanah and his son Francis? Who was Cathern
Boise. Orrins oldest son George was my father. He married my mother, Margaret
Kennedy in Middlesex County Ontario in 1881. He died in Sanilac County Michigan
in 1922.

Hello,
My name is Robert Martin Neher and I think we might be related. My
grandfather was Glenn Thomas Martin, b.1885, d. 1935. His father was Orrin
Caleb Martin, b. 1847, d. 1922. His father and mother were Ozias Caleb Martin,
b. 1815, d. 1902; and Elizabeth A. (Potter) Martin, b. about 1827, d. Unknown.
I would like to find out more about the Potter family and any older information
that you may know about who Ozias's parents and grandparents were.
Thanks for your help,

Bob-
I haven't worked on this line for awhile, but I just got an e-mail
from another family member with this information:
"Orrin Potter's family back in Vermont. His father Aaron was
in the Revolutionary War and was one of the last continental soldiers to be
discharged. He married Susannah Wilkerson in Massachusetts after the war and
their first child, Thompson, was born there. They moved to Vermont in the
1790's and eventually settled at Milton. Aaron was a tailor by trade, but
infirmities made it difficult to earn a living; he avoided prison in 1820 only
by signing the "debtors oath." One of Orrin's brothers, Arvin, did
serve a prison term for stealing a horse! Actually, I have learned more about
his family than about Orrin himself. I still haven't identified his first wife
or the children he had, and I still haven't located a record confirming his
death. Rumors persist that he did not die in Canada in 1862-63. I told you
about finding an "Orrin Potter" in Lenawee County, Michigan, on the
1870 census. Now, another researcher is convinced that Orrin actually died in
1871 in Michigan and is buried in Grand Rapids! I confirmed there is a
headstone at Valley City Cemetery, Grand Rapids, with the inscription
"Potter, Orrin S," showing that he died January 3, 1871, at the age
of 73 years, 27 days. He is buried in the same plot as Ozias Caleb Martin (b.
1815; d. 1902) and his wife, Eliza Potter Martin (b. 1826; d. 1877). The
conjecture is that Orrin S. was the father of Eliza Potter Martin. Some weight
is added to that by the fact that Ozias and Eliza named their first-born son
Orrin (b. 1847; d. 1922). I have researched the Martin family of
Grand Rapids, but as yet have found nothing to definitely link
"our" Orrin Potter to the one on the 1871 Michigan census, or the one
buried in Grand Rapids. It is interesting, however, that the son Orrin was born
at Somerset Township, Niagara County, New York, circa 1847 - a period when we
know "our" Orrin was living in Niagara County, New York. It is also
interesting that Eliza Potter was born circa 1826 in Vermont, where we know
"our" Orrin was living at that time. The search
continues."
Perhaps you have further information?
Cindy

Cindy,
Thanks for the additional info. I'm pretty sure that Orrin Potter
is the father of Eliza, wife of Ozias Caleb Martin (who is my great great
grandfather). I'll send the data that I have in a few days. I have a friend in
Grand Rapids who will do some leg work there for me. I have also ordered Ozias
Martin's Civil War file and should get that in the next few days. I have lots
of data on Orrin Caleb Martin and his dad, Ozias. I'll keep you posted.
