Juneau resident Robert V. Blankenship died Sunday, Oct. 27, 2002, in Juneau. He was born in Sitka on Sept. 15, 1953. Most of his life was spent in Sitka until he moved to Juneau in 1999. He was a commercial fisherman and a heavy-equipment operator.

He is survived by four children, Paul of Sitka; Laura and Cecilia of Juneau; Jessica and her husband Ira of Ramstein, Germany; grandson Andrew; parents Vaughn and Marian Blankenship of Sitka; grandmother Rose Marvin of Sitka; brother and sister-in-law Brian and Annette Blankenship of Sitka; sister and brother-in-law Rose and Al Risley of Juneau; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A prayer service was held at onNov. 2, at the Cathedral of the Nativity.

 Funeral services will take place in Sitka at a later date.

She is survived by her husband Robert Blankenship of Moose Pass; sons Brian and Robbie of Moose Pass; daughters Lexi and Nicole of Moose Pass; father Peter Nease Sr. and stepmother Lilly of Juneau; brothers Clifford of Las Vegas, Steve Johnson of Washington, Peter Nease Jr. of Juneau, Mark Nease of Anchorage and John Nease of Juneau; sister Colleen Nease of Juneau; aunt and uncle Dave and Trisha Nease of Oregon; and in-laws Bob and Laura Blankenship of North Carolina.

A private service is scheduled at the Blankenship home on Tuesday, May 8. Visitors are welcome throughout the day.

Wasilla resident Jack L. Blankenship, 79, died June 24, 2001, at home. Mr. Blankenship was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Riffe, Wash.

He joined the U.S. Navy in December 1941 and served until August 1945. He began his Alaska residency in 1982, living in Juneau until 1987, then Wasilla until the time of his death. Mr. Blankenship had been employed as a logger and trucker from 1938 to 1941, well driller for Atomic Energy Commission from 1945 to 1954, ironworker from 1954 to 1971, and as a trucker form 1972 to 1977, at which time he retired because of a disability. Mr. Blankenship was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Masons and Benevolent And Protective Order of Elks Lodge. His hobbies and special interests included hunting and fishing. His family stated, ''He loved and was very proud of his family.''

Mr. Blankenship is survived by his wife, June Marie Blankenship of Wasilla; son, Damon of Wasilla; daughter, Jackie Lynn Heller of Delta Junction; stepdaughters, Judy Heidlebaugh of Las Vegas and Denise Hesse of Onalaska, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and brothers, Arnold Blankenship of Mossy Rock, Wash., Hartley Blankenship of Chelan, Wash., Freeman Blankenship of Cinebar, Wash., and Delman Blankenship of Tacoma, Wash.

A memorial service was held at Fairview Loop Baptist Church, Mile 8.25 Fairview Loop Road, in Wasilla. The Rev. Tom Hoffman officiated.

Former Juneau resident Bessie Laverne (Naawaan Tlaa) Kitka, 82, of Sitka, died Jan. 1, 2006, at Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. She was born to Pete and Mary Kanosh on March 16, 1923, in Auke Bay. She was a grandchild of Kaawa.ee (Kowee) and a member of the Aak'waan L'eeneidi, Dog Salmon House. Her father, Pete Kanosh (Tleeyaa Keet, Gusht'eiheen), was of the Dakl'aweidi Keet Hit, Killer Whale House, in Angoon. Peter's mother was Yaxlahaat, the daughter of Killisnoo Jake. She was Gax'. Peter's father was Dick Kanosh of the Ganax.adi from Tuxekan. Dick Kanosh's father was Yaanyeidi.

Bessie was one of the last fluent speakers of the Tlingit language for the Auke Bay tribe. All of her children and grandchildren received a Tlingit name. She attended Wrangell Institute. She worked at various canneries and was a self-trained dietitian, retiring from Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital. She was a member of the Village Planning Commission in the early 1970s. She was a lifetime member of the Sitka Alaska Native Sisterhood, Sitka Sportsman's Association and American Legion Auxiliary. She was enrolled in the Sitka Tribe, Tlingit & Haida, Shee Atika Inc., Sealaska and Kootznoowoo.

She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, and knitting sweaters and blankets. She flew to Juneau once a month to visit and shop with her granddaughter. She collected music boxes, angels, toasters and coffee pots. Three years ago, she traveled with her granddaughter, Roxanne, to Seattle to take a five-generation family photo.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Castro, Hazel Bennett, Sophie Peck and Fannie John; her brothers, John Fred, Matthew Fred and Joe Kanosh; her first husband, Jacob Sam and second husband, Andrew Kitka; her grandson, Steven David Payenna; and great-great-grandson, Andrew Jacob Williams.

She is survived by her children, Wilma Smathers and her husband Charlie of Everett, Wash., Barbara Keener and her husband Eric Borgen of Sitka, Brenda Sam of Sitka, John Sam of Sunnyvale, Calif., David Sam and his wife Chris of Anchorage, Fred Sam and his wife Tina of Anchorage, Bob Sam of Sitka, Marie Young and her husband George of Sitka, Christine Paul and her husband John of Sitka, and Evelyn Schenk and her husband Tom of Sitka; 24 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at Alaska Native Sisterhood Hall. Russian Orthodox services were at St. Michael's Cathedral with a reception at Swan Lake Senior Center. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are Frank Sam, Tommy Sam, Allen and John Blankenship, Harold Kitka, Ben Didrickson, Ben Cornell, Richard Marvin Jr., Ernie Hillman, Richard Marvin Sr., Ed Young, William Kanosh, Kim Hansen, Joe Murray, Joe Thomas and Stan Filler.
