http://www.seedsofhopeonline.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?action=viewnews&id=335
Victor Russell Blankenship, July 4, 1922— August 10, 2008.
A mighty oak has fallen.
August 10, 2008 the servant and Elder of the Lord’s church at Sylacauga,
Al., Brother Victor Russell Blankenship departed this life. He was 86 years of
age.
After a multiple year confinement to Bill Nichols State Veterans
Home in Alexander City, Al. Bro. Blankenship succumbed to Alzheimer’s disease.
Survivors include his widow,
Bobbie Dean Parker Blankenship who labored at his side for sixty
years. Six children: Sandra Nelson and husband Bobby, Vickie Elliot, Tony
Blankenship, Rodney Blankenship and wife Mary, Doyle Blankenship, Rita Patton and
husband Jim. Seven grandchildren and
four great grandchildren also survive. Bro. Blankenship served his country
during World War II as a gun crewman and light artillery specialist with the US
Army Battery B 916th Field Artillery Battalion. He was awarded the American
Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the European
African Middle Eastern Service Medal with 3 Bronze stars.
It was my good fortune to become acquainted with this gentleman
twenty five years ago. I was invited to
Sylacauga to preach a gospel meeting.
Robin and I were
met by Bro. Victor’s son, Tony.
I was quickly informed Vic was in the hospital having suffered a heart
attack. My first association with Bro.
Victor was visiting him in his hospital room where he quickly informed me he
had decided to leave the hospital against the doctor’s recommendations to
attend the meeting. He left the hospital
that day and was in attendance every night of the meeting. My association with him under such improbable
circumstances developed over the years. Our friendship and brotherly love that
stemmed from fellowship in Christ was one of a rich and cherished alliance.
Those who knew Brother Vic best remember him as a kind and loving man. His concern for the lost dictated the actions
of his life. He was instrumental in the
baptism of many people in the Sylacauga area.
His acts of benevolence did not go unnoticed nor did his influence. He gained the respect not only of the country
for which he fought in World War II (he was a decorated soldier) but those of
his community.
Brother Vic served the church with a zeal and strict concern for
the souls of people with no discriminatory restrictions. Quite frankly race or
social standing was of no concern to him.
Regardless of who you were, he was most interested in the salvation of
your soul. One of the songs he led often, “Do you know my Jesus?” was a song he
lived. He served in the capacity of an
elder with three other capable men:
Brother Waymon Masters, Brother Reece Hughes, and Brother Julius
Gray. Brother Hughes, Brother Gray and
Brother Blankenship entered the nursing home within a few months of each other
and their passing was all within a year of the other. It was said, “These men did everything
together”.
Brother Blankenship worked at Hayes Aircraft in Birmingham until a
heart attack forced him into retirement in the early 80’s. With a certain
amount of resistance
he finally acclimated
himself to retirement, which for him was not idleness. He enjoyed working on his farm, tending to
his cattle and growing a garden. His work as an elder was always foremost. He provided an example of leadership in
spiritual matters, in business and family life.
All those who knew Brother Vic found that he and Bobbie were
synonymous. It was just impossible to
speak of Vic without thinking of Bobbie.
The strength of character was further demonstrated in the reverence and
respect rewarded to him by his children and grandchildren. I am sure you can define a man’s legacy by
how his children are drawn or repelled by him. It became very evident to
everyone who knew him that all the family of Bro. Blankenship was drawn to this
kind and loving man.
There are many things that could be said of the life of Bro.
Blankenship. If all who knew this man
spoke, days would be consumed in relating their memories. If you would indulge
me I have one event I would like to relate.
The family asked after his passing that in lieu of flowers, donations
should be made to the Veterans home activity fund. Administrators of the home commented that
never had there been as many donations in honor of one man. The employees commented aptly, “what a man!”
We are sure we can speak for many in offering our sympathy and
condolences to Sister Bobbie and the children and grandchildren. Truly the
congregation and the community of Sylacauga experience a void at the death of
Bro. Vic. Though sadness exists at the
passing of one we love, we are not distraught nor are we overwhelmed. This is true because of the faith and
confidence we have in our Lord. It is
our conviction of a future blessed reunion with those who die in the Lord—I
Thess. 4:13-18
Bro. Blankenship was laid to rest August 12, 2008. He, along with the multitude of saints that
have died before him, now awaits the shout from our Lord that will awaken them
from their sleep. “For the Lord himself shall descend
from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump
of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:”—I Thess. 4:16. May all who read this find hope in the resurrection. May
those who fail to find hope—seek with urgency reconciliation to God that is
found in Christ.

Dr. Hosmer T. Merrell, formerly of Marion, died Saturday, Feb. 24,
2007, at his home in the Pine Valley Residential Community of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Hos
was born June 5, 1915, in Rockford, and spent his childhood in Streator. He
attended Illinois Wesleyan, graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of

his eye while he was completing his internship in general medicine at Chicago's
