Notary Public in and for the aforesaid county and state, Wm A. Buck, aged 57
years, James C. McLean, aged 62 years and Noah Haddock, aged 44 years, each
residents of Convenience, in Independence
County and State aforesaid, who being duly sworn, declare in relation to the aforesaid
case as follows:
That they were each
personally acquainted with Wm
Blankinship and his wife, Jane
E. Gilmore before and after their marriage. They did not see them married but
know that the said Wm
Blankinship came to his
father-in-law's house sick and died a few days thereafter with the measles - We
live on
adjoining farms to
the one on which he died in the month of March in the year of 1865 - they know
that he was taken Prisoner by the Confederates about one month or 30 days before
he died - and they further declare that they have no interest in said case and
that they are not concerned in the prosecution of said case.

as he was too young to have married in 1856 and is found to still be living
with his family at age 18 in MO 1860 census. The mixup

Prof. J. W. Blankenship, of the Rally Hill Academy, was fined for punishing
a student of his school. Quite a large number of the patrons of the
school endorsed the professor in a card published in the Harrison Times last
week.

Doc Blankenship, of Sugar Loaf Township, was lodged in
jail Tuesday to await the action of the grand jury. He is charged with
rape. No particulars.
Geo. Lawson and
Ben Weast took Doc Blankinship to
Harrison last week and placed him in the Boone county jail for safe
keeping. Mr. McFann, of Taney county, Mo., one of Blankinship's
attorneys, informs us that the report that Blankinship had
served a term in the Missouri penitentiary for rape, was a mistake. The crime for which he was sent to the pen. was for assault with intent to kill. As the report was
published in The Echo, from and exchange, we cheerfully make the correction and
give the prisoner his due.

Doc Blankenship, who is confined in jail, on charge of
rape, on last Sunday met with a painful accident. He put one chain on top
of another for the purpose of reaching the hole in the ceiling of the cell left
for a stove pipe, in order to talk to his guard, who was in the upper room, when
his foot slipped and he fell to the floor. His right arm was knocked out
of place by the fall, and the chair post struck him in the side, causing him
much pain. Dr. Bryan was called and waited on the prisoner.

Doc Blankenship,
one of the occupants of our jail, has been making desperate efforts for
liberty, and on one or two occasions came near being successful. On last
Friday night he freed himself from his chains, which were locked on his ankles,
and opened the inside door of the cell. After getting to the outside
door, he cut a hole through the thick oak door facing with a pocket knife, but
before cutting the hole large enough to admit his hand
going through it, his knife broke. He was working to reach the
lock on the outside, which he doubtless would have unlocked with ease, since it
appears that he was well provided with wooden keys which he had made and which
worked admirably well. On Sunday, Jailer Lefevers
found Blankenship between the inside and outside doors and
demanded him to turn over his key which he had reason to believe he had in his possession.
He denied having any key, but when Mr.
Lefevers threatened to have him stripped and
searched, he gave up a wooden key which he had concealed in his clothing.
Later in the evening, while Blankenship was entertaining a crowd of boys around
the jail by removing his chains, Mr. Lefevers came
along and took from him three other keys. These keys are made of hickory
and unlock the locks as well as the keys in the jailer's possession. Blankenship made the keys himself having been furnished with a pocket
knife by a little boy named Tom Watkins, whom
he promised to pay $2 when he gained his liberty, if the boy would get him a
knife and a corset stay. The boy complied with the request and Blankenship came very near making his escape. It is believed he
has a key for the large lock on the outside door, but if he has, the most diligent
search has been fruitless. A guard is now kept at the jail at night, and
the escape of the prisoner is not at all probable. The jail is perfectly
safe with the exception of the doors, which should be made secure without further
delay.

GUILTY OF RAPE: So
Says the Jury in the BLANKINSHIP Case.
The case that has
excited more interest this term of Circuit Court than any other,
is that of the State against Jesse
Blankinship, charged with
Rape. The trial was begun
last Friday, but a jury could not be impaneled until Saturday morning.
The trial lasted till Monday evening, the State being ably represented by
prosecuting attorney, DeRoos Bailey, and the
defendant being equally as ably represented by Mr. Fisk and Judge Keener.
The arguments on both sides lasted nearly the whole of the day on Monday. The
jury returned about 5 o'clock in the afternoon, and did not reach a verdict
until nearly sunrise Tuesday morning, when it reached a verdict of
guilty. If this verdict is sustained by the courts, the punishment will
be death. The prisoner seems to care but little about the verdict when
taken back to the jail. After hearing the verdict he said "By G-d, I
wish they would come on with their rope." The people are divided in
opinion concerning the verdict.
