"Uncle Joe" Blankenship One of Monette
Founders, Dies Here Today At Age 91
Joseph E. (Uncle Joe) Blankenship, one of the
founders of the town of Monette, died this morning at
10:45 at the age of 91.
Mr. Blankenship came to the eastern
section of Craighead County in 1886 when the area was nothing more than a
forest. He and a few other pioneer settlers were the first to make their home
at the location of the present tow. He helped clear away the land and owned one
of the first farms in what is now a rich agricultural section. In 1898 he
formed the Blankenship co. as a general mercantile store. Through good times and bad it has
continued to operate. Today it is operated by his grandson, James Blankenship and his great grandson Jimmy, still known as
Blankenship Co.
Mr. Blankenship was the oldest living
resident of Monette. He had been in ill health for
several years, but his condition became critical recently. He was at St.
Bernard's Hospital when death occurred. In the summer of 1950, the town of Monette paid homage to its oldest citizen when he was named
honored guest at the "50 Years of Progress" celebration.
He is survived by two daughters,
Mrs. Ray Jackson of Jonesboro and Mrs. Gladys Agnew of Monette.
Also surviving are 10 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete with
Gregg Funeral Home in charge.
