Old Homesite Near Rye Has Been in the Family for 128
Years.
A tract of land
in the Rye community, Homesteaded 128 years ago by a Virginian and his wife,
along with other acreage, is still owned by a member of the family of the
homesteader.
Recently when 300 acres of the G. R.
Blankenship estate land in Cleveland county was sold at auction
at the courthouse here the purchaser was Blankenships granddaughter, Mrs. Jim
Scott, and her husband. The sale was made in settling the estate.
On this 300-acre
tract of the old Blankenship homestead is the location of the old home and
the family cemetery. The tract was homesteaded in 1840 by Samuel
Harrison and Harriett Perry Blankenship, who came here with their
children from Nottoway county, Virginia. They
homesteaded a section or more of land.
Buried in the
old family cemetery are Mr. and Mrs. Blankenship, two of their grandchildren, a
son and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. (Hattie) Blankenship.
Mr. and Mrs.
S. H. Blankenship, who came to what is now the Rye community from Virginia
21 years before the Civil War, had five sons and three daughters. The sons were John W.,
Samuel Perry, William Harrison, Tom and Roscoe, and the Daughters were Jennie, who
married Hugh Bradley and made their home in Warren; Evalena, who
married Dave wells, who died and left a daughter, and Lummy who married Wells after her sisters death.
John married and
moved to Texarkana where he raised his family of three boys and a girl; Roscoe Settled
farther west in Texas; Samuel P. married Elizabeth Martin and resided in Warren; Hattie and Tom fought in
the Civil War. Tom was killed in the battle of Shiloh and Hattie Received a
wound in the neck in the same battle.
After the war Hattie Married
Elizabeth Wainright and remained at the old home, and
raised his family, later moving to warren.
After Hattie
Blankenships death the place was owned by one of his sons, G. R.
Blankenship, and his children and grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Blankenship, the Pioneers, where the Charter
Members of the Union Methodist Church. Mr. Blankenship died in
1847. On December 3, 1855, Mrs. Harriet Blankenship deeded land to the church off the
southern part of her place. She died in 1858.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Blankenship
Held Last Saturday
Altha Rodman Blankenship was born October 19, 1891 at Newburg, Ark., and departed this life
February 7, 1961 at Melbourne at the age of 69 years, three months and 19 days.
Mrs. Blankenship was married October 16, 1912 to L. S. Blankenship and to this union 11 children were born,
two of which preceded her in death. She was a life-time resident of Izard
County and was a member of the Methodist Church, having been converted early in
life.
Survivors besides her husband, include: eight sons, Fred of Melbourne, Guy of Wenatchee, Wash., Paul of Osceola,
Ark., Wayne of Chesterton, Ind., Newt of Melbourne, Dean of Ava, Mo., Carl of Little Rock and Kay of Wichita,
Kan.; and one daughter, Mrs. Billy
Reynolds of Independence, Mo.; five brothers, Albert Rodman of Little Rock,
Glenn Rodman of Little Rock, J. A. and Alfred Rodman of Melbourne and Albert
Rodman of Forty-Four; one sister, Mrs. Homer Townsend of Forty-four and 18
grandchildren.
Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery under the direction of
Hall Funeral Home.

Hubert L. Blankenship, 74, of 311 E. St., died at 3 p.m. Saturday in his
home. He had been a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter
Day Saints and was retired from L. E. Myers Construction Co.
He is survived by his widow; three sons, Wesley of Texarkana, Lin of
Mountain Home, Ark., and Douglas of Craig, Colo; five
grandchildren; and a great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are pending at East Funeral Home. Burial will be in
Rondo Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Lonnie Middleton, Scot MaKaffey, Alton Wright, Bill Steltz,
Harold B. Schultz and Emmett McDonald.
