Blankenship Old Homesite Near Rye Has Been in the Family for 128 Years.

A tract of land in the Rye community, Homesteaded 128 years ago by a Virginian and his wife, along with other acreage, is still owned by a member of the family of the homesteader.

Recently when 300 acres of the G. R. Blankenship estate land in Cleveland county was sold at auction at the courthouse here the purchaser was Blankenship’s granddaughter, Mrs. Jim Scott, and her husband. The sale was made in settling the estate.

The tract was homesteaded in 1840 by Samuel Harrison and Harriett Perry Blankenship, who came here with their children from Nottoway county, Virginia. They homesteaded a section or more of land.

Buried in the old family cemetery are Mr. and Mrs. Blankenship, two of their grandchildren, a son and a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. (Hattie) Blankenship.

Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Blankenship, who came to what is now the Rye community from Virginia 21 years before the Civil War, had five sons and three daughters. The sons were John W., Samuel Perry, William Harrison, Tom and Roscoe, and the Daughters were Jennie, who married Hugh Bradley and made their home in Warren; Evalena, who married Dave wells, who died and left a daughter, and Lummy who married Wells after her sister’s death.

Tom was killed in the battle of Shiloh and Hattie Received a wound in the neck in the same battle.

After the war Hattie Married Elizabeth Wainright and remained at the old home, and raised his family, later moving to warren.

After Hattie Blankenship’s death the place was owned by one of his sons, G. R. Blankenship, and his children and grandchildren.
