PARENTS SHOT AT ROADSIDE; 4 SONS SLEEP Boys Claim They Heard Nothing

Seligman, Ariz., June 9 (UPI)-- Sobbing children standing beside the road today led authorities to the U. S. highway 66 murders of a vacationing Oklahoma couple 13 miles west of here. The bodies of J. B. Welch, 33, of Spencer, Okla., a driver for a transcontinental truck line in Oklahoma City, and his wife, Utha Marie, 31, were found in their vacation-gear packed 1959 car beside the road.

Sons Slept Nearby, Both had been shot in the head by what sheriff's deputies said appeared to be small-caliber bullets, possibly from a .22 caliber pistol or rifle. The Welches were murdered during the night while their four sons, Jimmy, 12, Tommy, 8, Billy, 9, and Johnny, 5, slept in a pup tent about three feet from the car. Yet, the children said they heard no gunshots and did not know their parents were dead until Johnny peeped from the tent at daylight. He asked his brother Jimmy what was the matter with their mother because she appeared to have something on her face.

Try to Stop Cars, They found it was blood. Their mother was dead in the front seat. Jimmy said he lifted his father's head in the back seat and found that he, too, had been killed. Several cars passed the youngsters as they tried to signal for aid. Then Dan Cramer and Jere Eagle, both of Riverside, Cal., pulled up beside the children. The men said the children were crying and one of them sobbed "Somebody shot mommy and daddy." Cramer and Eagle flagged down motorists and asked for authorities.

Highway Patrolman Dan Birdno was the first officer on the scene. Sheriff's Deputy Perry Blankenship arrived shortly and the children were brought to this small northern Arizona town. Jimmy said that the family had been bound for Fresno, Cal., to visit his grandmother. They planned to go to Colorado Springs, then home to Oklahoma City. A coroner's jury was called to the spot, assisted by Dr. A. J. Gungle of Seligman, who said it appeared the couple had been dead several hours.

Bus Stops Nearby, This was in apparent conflict with the statement of a woman passenger on a bus which stopped near the car at 5:10 a.m. She told authorities she saw movement in the car and children peeping from the tent. Apparently no one got on or off the bus at the scene. Investigators found Mrs. Welch's purse. They said expensive rings were still on her finger, seemingly ruling out robbery. Blankenship said it appeared Mrs. Welch was killed as she slept and that Welch was shot as he attempted to rise from the back seat. Bodies of the victims were taken to Prescott. The children were taken to the sheriff's station in the same city for questioning. Sheriff James Cramer of Yavapai county said the slayings were the third and fourth along the same stretch of highway in the past three years, but there was no immediate link between them.
