+2014, Glendale, Maricopa Co., AZ, Obituary

Published in The Arizona Republic on Apr. 13, 2014

Dorothy Ruth Blankenship, 99, of Glendale, AZ passed away on March 20, 2014. Dorothy was born on November 22, 1914, in Wichita, Kansas.

She attended public school and the University of Wichita, where she majored in music education and was active in Delta Omega, the music sorority. Music remained important to her throughout her life; she loved playing the piano and sang in choral groups. She graduated from college in 1936, and then taught music in rural high schools around Wichita. After a few years of high school teaching, she returned to Wichita and a job in the municipal electric utility.

After World War II broke out, Dorothy met Abe Margolin, who became her husband a few years later. They were married in Morgantown, West Virginia, where he taught at West Virginia University. Before their first child, David, was a year old, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona, in 1948, where Abe began teaching at Phoenix College. From that time until her death, Dorothy lived most of her life in the Phoenix area.

By 1950, the family had grown to five, with the addition of twin girls, Nancy and Sally. Dorothy stayed home with the children until they started preschool, at which point she went back to school herself, to earn a teaching degree in early childhood education. She taught kindergarten until her retirement in 1978, and remained delighted by little ones the rest of her life. Dorothy was a long-time member of Phoenix Lyric Singers and an avid bird-watcher.

After Abe's death, in 1973, Dorothy married Ralph Blankenship, a long-time neighbor and friend. Once retired from teaching, Dorothy introduced Ralph to her love of traveling. They traveled together throughout the United States and all over the world. Together they were active in the Arizona Retired Teachers' Association and Arizona State University (Ralph's alma mater) alumni events. She and Ralph lived for several years in Scottsdale, before moving to Sedona, their favorite place. As they got older, however, they decided to move back to the Phoenix area, in order to be closer to health care facilities. Ralph passed away in 1998. Dorothy spent the last six years of her life being lovingly cared for at a private residence in Glendale. Remaining friends and family will miss her always cheerful disposition and great sense of humor.

She is survived by her three children - David Margolin, Sally Margolin, and Nancy Singleton - and three grandchildren - Boris, Hannah, and Danielle.

No services are planned.

Otho and Betty were proud parents of Michael and Patty. Otho was a faithful husband and father. He provided a legacy of faith, honesty, and integrity. He inspired his son and grandson to become Phoenix firemen. The legacy continues as his great grandson pursues the same dream of becoming a Phoenix fighter.

Otho was grateful for his career and the family of fire fighters that filled his life. He and Betty attended First Church of Christ (now known as Lincoln Heights Church) for over 65 years. He served as a deacon in the church for many years and, he and Betty attended the same Sunday school class as newlyweds to senior adults. Otho loved to fish for Bass in Arizona Lakes! He loved to fish alone or with friends and family. He knew all the best fishing spots in Bartlett and Roosevelt Lake. He was always ready for the next fishing adventure. His last successful fishing trip with his oldest grandson was the day before his death.

He enjoyed time with six grandchildren: Ron, Neil, Ryan, Jenn, Chris, and Matt. He also enjoyed the blessing of great grandchildren: Jacob, Tanner, Katie, Kaycie, Conner, Audrey, Peyton, and Layla. All of the grandchildren enjoyed their grandpa whether spending time at the cabin, fishing, or hanging out at grandma and grandpa's house. Otho's quiet faith in Jesus guided his life. He was a man who demonstrated honesty, integrity, and a love for faith and family. Otho was a loyal man who now is in the presence of his Lord.

2019, Phoenix, Maricopa Co., AZ, Obituary

St. Louis Post-Dispatch (MO) - June 9, 2019

Alonzo B. "Lon" Davis, Jr. age 79, passed away March 28, 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona. Lon was born August 10, 1939 in Arcata, Calif., arriving in St. Louis, Missouri in 1943, where he remained for 70 years.

Lon's great-nephews and great-nieces, Jason, Allyson, Lindsay, Melissa, Matthew, Alex and J. D, have fond memories of times spent with their uncle.

Lon graduated from O'Fallon Technical School in St. Louis after his tour in the Army. It is during his duty at the Pentagon that he met his wife (of nine years) Jan, the mother of Cathie and Susie. Lon was a creative artist, illustrator and photographer, which led to his starting his own business "Lon Davis Associates" in St. Louis. Lon suffered a life threatening auto accident in the early 1970s. Although physicians said he would never walk or talk again, his talents continued to shine through.

Facing health issues in his later years and his desire to be closer to his daughters, he left the city he loved and moved to Indianapolis, and then his final home in Phoenix, Ariz. Lon was a strong advocate for the city of St. Louis and its long standing institutions, most notably KMOX Radio, Post-Dispatch, Forest Park, Cardinals Baseball, and the 'ole' Hodiamont/ Delmar street car lines. Among his last requests before leaving St. Louis for the last time was a drive through Forest Park, where his sister and future brother-in-law Bill would take him sledding on Art Hill as a youngster. The other request was to visit the site where he and his mom so often caught the street car at Jefferson/Delmar.

Lon's lifelong interest in science, history and politics led to interesting discussions with family members. In terms of politics, Lon never wavered in his belief that America was the greatest country on earth and man's best hope in this world. Lon, you have left a vast empty space in your daughters' and sister Wanda's hearts and will be missed by us all.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alonzo Buford and Goldie Irene (nee Calvin) Davis.

Lon is survived by his daughters Catherine Hertenstein and Susie (Lance) Kuhler, grandchildren Nicholas, Savanah (Nathanael), Gabriel, Cayden, Cassie, Ashton and a greatgrandson Nakoa; his sister Wanda (Bill) Roewe; nephews Dan (Ida) Roewe, Doug Roewe; nieces Donna (Bruce) Bader and Connie White, cousin Carole (Jerry) Blankenship, and his beloved great-nephews and great-nieces.

Funeral Services will be at 11:00 am, Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Wolfersberger Funeral Home, 102 W. Washington St., O'Fallon, Illinois, with Rev. William J. Hitpas officiating. Final resting place will be Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Shiloh, Ill.

+2015, Oro Valley, Pima Co., AZ, Obituary

Published in the Arizona Daily Star on Feb. 11, 2015

Albert Lamar Blankenship, Jr. passed away on February 5, 2015. He spoke not a word of complaint as he fought stage IV cancer for over four years with courage and unwavering determination. He was born in Welch, West Virginia in 1948.

His family moved to Tucson in 1951. He graduated from Catalina High School in 1966 and from the University of Arizona with a business degree in 1970. He received his law degree from the UofA in 1973. Practicing law from 1973 to 2014, Al was a very well respected attorney who helped thousands of people with many different types of cases. His family always knew his clients were very fond of him, but it has been surprising and heartwarming to hear from so many clients about how much they truly loved and respected him.

Al was married to the love of his life, Becky, for 41 years. Together they own a small ranch where, for the last 25 years, hundreds of children have learned to ride, love, and care for horses. Al was a loving father and an entertaining and endlessly patient grandfather. In his free time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, race cars, race horses, and working around the ranch. He was a very handy guy who could fix just about anything. He was good-naturedly teased about the creative methods he sometimes employed.

Al was preceded in death by his father, Al Sr. and his brother, Remo.

He is survived by his mother, Benvenuta; wife, Becky; sisters, Davida (Joe) Jepson and Filomena Blankenship (Paul Goff); daughters, Joanne (Jon) Tepley and Barbie (Bruce) Patterson and grandchildren, Riley, Ella and Charlotte Tepley and Ruth, Sam, and Daisy Patterson.

Al will be remembered for his work ethic, humor, quick wit, quiet determination, encyclopedic knowledge, humility, and love for his family. Although we will miss him always, we know he is now up above, watching over us, working at making everything OK again, just as he always did, when he was here with us.

Al's Funeral will be on Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at The Oro Valley Church of the Nazarene, 500 W. Calle Concordia,

2013, Tucson, Pima Co., AZ, Obituary

The Arizona Daily Star, (Tucson, AZ) - March 13, 2013

Former Tucson newsman Randy Garsee, who co-anchored KOLD's nightly news program for nearly a decade, died over the weekend at his home in Virginia. His death at age 50 came as a surprise to all who knew him, said Kris Pickel, who teamed with Garsee on the anchor desk. "I'm in shock, as a lot of his friends are. We can't believe this happened," said Pickel, now a news co-anchor at a Cleveland television station. "He was an eloquent man and prolific writer. Just a hell of a guy. I was lucky to be paired up with him," Pickel said.

Though Garsee and his wife of 18 years, Amy Blankenship -Garsee, finalized their divorce two months ago, the former anchor was planning to visit Tucson next week to spend spring break with their daughters, Isabelle, 17, and Analiese, 12. Garsee, who died in his sleep, had high blood pressure, said Blankenship -Garsee, who suspects the condition may have contributed to his death. "He loved his girls more than anything. He liked to say they were made to order," Blankenship -Garsee said. Pickel had kept in touch with Garsee by phone and through social media, but hadn't seen him in seven years. She and her husband planned to visit Garsee in a few weeks. "Randy was fun. He was unique. We were polar opposites ... so we complemented each other. He had such a different outlook on everything. He loved to fire people up. He earned the respect of a lot of people for doing it," she said. Scott Kilbury, a news anchor at KOLD, remembered Garsee for his good humor and intense focus. "When he would get into a story, he would really get into it," Kilbury said. He said he remembered Garsee going to Colorado City, Ariz., on his own time to look into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. "This was years before Warren Jeffs was exposed," Kilbury said about the now-jailed polygamist sect leader. Garsee, an avid reader, cracked a book whenever possible. "He loved to read and would often walk through the newsroom with a book in hand," Kilbury said. "One time he got caught on camera reading a book while I was doing sports. They had to cut sports abruptly, and he was surprised on camera." Garsee, a native of Texas, anchored the local news with Pickel from 1997 to 2006, when she took a job in Sacramento. Months later, Garsee announced he was fired from KOLD for sending an in-house email critical of station management. After leaving Tucson, Garsee took a job as anchor and managing editor with an NBC affiliate in Texas before working as a civilian public affairs specialist/journalist with the Marine Corps at Al Asad Air Base in Iraq's al Anbar province. A documentary he made, "Dusk in the Dust," chronicles the Marines' final year in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In 2010 Garsee became communications and public affairs adviser for the Center for Naval Analyses & Institute for Public Research. No matter where he traveled, Garsee maintained links to Tucson through his children and The Tucson Murals Project, a blog he started seven years ago to document the public art that is unique to the Old Pueblo. "He was driving around town and he kept seeing all these murals," Blankenship -Garsee said. "It's not common other places where we lived. It was something he thought was real cool and needed to be brought to everyone's attention. He said, 'We always focus on the negative - Who got shot? Somebody got killed. Why can't we focus on the good in the place where we live?' " Garsee was a self-published author and was working with his oldest daughter on a book about dragons. "That was a big theme in Randy's world," Blankenship -Garsee said. "From the day I met him, he always loved dragons." Isabelle plans to finish the book for her father. "I think it's only fair that everyone gets to hear it. That's the one idea he was solely devoted to," she said.

Services are planned for him in Buna, Texas.

As a loving daughter, friend, mother and wife she will be dearly missed.
