Contra Costa
+2009, Walnut Creek, Contra Costa Co., CA, Obituary
Published in Contra Costa Times from October
23 to October 25, 2009
Betty Joanne Blankenship Fairclough September 16, 1929 - Octpber 5, 2009. Resident of Walnut
Creek Betty Joanne Blankenship
Fairclough, loving wife of
Richard Hartley Fairclough and loving mother of four daughters, passed away
peacefully at Kaiser Hospital, Walnut Creek, on Oct. 5, 2009.
Private family services were held on Oct. 13, 2009. Betty was a
native Californian, growing up in Lafayette with her sister Marjorie. Her
parents were longtime Lafayette residents, Merle Selme and Evelyn Mae Hartwell Blankenship.
It was at Acalanes High School, from which she graduated early,
that she found her passion, coming to love modern dance under the tutelage of
Millicent Hamburger. Millicent inspired her with many life lessons and among
her favorites was "Your reach must exceed your grasp, else what's a heaven
for?" She continued her study of body movement, physical education, and
dance at U.C. Berkeley, from where she graduated early with a B.A. degree in
Physical Education. It was at Mt. Diablo High School, while teaching P.E. and
modern dance, that she met her loving husband, math teacher and head football
and track coach, Hart Fairclough. Their first date was the CAL/Stanford big
game in November 1952. They got married on April 10th, 1954 and went on to
raise four daughters on the side of Mt. Diablo in Walnut Creek. They called
their Shangrila "Fairacre." Betty enjoyed being a devoted wife
(better known to the family as a "domestic engineer") to a very busy
Mt. Diablo High School head coach and later on DVAL Commissioner. She managed
this all while raising her four daughters, which included the usual tasks along
with caring for chickens, ducks, cats, 4-H lambs, horses and more. Imagine the
loads of laundry! All her life she was giving, forever positive, and quick to
smile with a twinkle in her eye.
After raising her family, she resumed modern dancing locally and
also started to pursue creative writing, in conjunction with nonfiction
writing, subsequently publishing several articles on her traveling adventures.
She and Hart enjoyed their retirement years traveling abroad and making U.S.
road trips in their van "RoamInn." They celebrated their 55th wedding
anniversary this year and Betty recently celebrated her 80th birthday with her
family.
She is survived by her loving husband Hart; her sister Marjorie
Bates; children Ann Fairclough of La Canada Flintridge, Kathryn Fairclough of
Martinez, Susan Fairclough of Lafayette, and Carolyn Thibault of Hope, ID;
along with two grandchildren Steven Thibault of Missoula, MT, and David
Thibault of Hope, ID.
A "Celebration of Betty's Life" reception will be held at
2:00pm on Friday, November 13th 2009, at the Pleasant Hill Recreation Center,
320 Civic Drive in Pleasant Hill in the "Parkside" room.

The Salinas
Californian , December
22, 2009
Carolyn Marjorie Clough Blankenship, 61, of Salinas passed away Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, at her
assisted living facility in Los Osos, CA. Carolyn was born
July 14, 1948 in Corry, PA and moved to Southern California when she was a
child. Carolyn received her Associates Degree at Los
Angeles Harbor College and her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Physical Education at
California State University Long Beach. She was employed at Wilmington Junior
High School in Wilmington, CA as a P.E. Instructor from 1971-1982.
Carolyn had her first
child, Philip, in June 1978. She moved to Monterey
County from Long Beach in January 1982 when her former husband, Lee Blankenship, became employed with the County of
Monterey. Shortly after, Carolyn had her second child, Jennifer, in December 1982. While her children were young, Carolyn was active with both her son and daughter's classrooms,
extracurricular and community sports activities. She was involved locally in
Cub Scouts of America as a Den Mother and Pack Leader, and was also active in
the Girl Scouts of America where she was a Troop Leader. Amongst her many
activities involving her children,
Carolyn was also a
host mom to several youth exchange students over a 15-year period. Carolyn's love for children encouraged her to become an Instructional Aide
for the Washington Union School District where she worked with special needs
students for several years. She later learned sign language through the Salinas
Adult School and became an aide at Toro School for the Deaf and Hard of
Hearing. She loved signing and working with the children.
When Carolyn was diagnosed with cancer in 1998, she
knew she was going to put up a fight, and what a fight it was. She became very
active in the Salinas Valley through the. She volunteered countless hours on
the Relay Committee and was the Team Captain for the Calvary Chapel of Salinas
for several years. In 2001, Carolyn received the Eve Mills Most Inspirational
Award for her time and dedication to the Salinas Valley.
Carolyn enjoyed
spending time with her family and friends, her cat Preston, going out to eat,
and watching new movies when they came out at the theatre. She spent a
tremendous amount of time with her two grandchildren, Kylee and Aidan and
visited with them as much as she was able. She took great pride in her garden,
and on most days, would spend a great deal of time tending to her flowers.
In May 2009, she entered Hospice Care in Los Osos, California to be
close to her daughter, Jennifer, and her two grandchildren, Kylee and
Aidan. Carolyn loved life and everyone in it, loved the
Lord, and put up an amazing fight right until the very end. She was an inspiration
to all who knew her.
Survivers: by her son Philip Andrew Blankenship of Los Angeles; daughter, Jennifer Ashley Hunt (Joshua Hunt) of Los Osos; grandchildren, Kylee Cierra Hunt
and Aidan Timothy Hunt; brother, David Clough of Carson; sisters, Dolores Doma
of Lakewood and Beverly Clough of Bellflower; former husband, Lee Blankenship, as well as many beloved cousins, nieces
and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, January 10, 2010 at the
Calvary Chapel of Salinas, 455 Palma Drive, Salinas, CA 93901.

Daily Press, 4/11/2004
Janet Lea Burch was born on Sept. 23, 1934, and a morning dove
blessed us as she passed on April 7, 2004. She was born in Emerson, Neb., to
Bennett and Alma Brustkern, where she was the baby and seventh born, along with
six other children (five sisters and one brother). She met and married Donald
D. Burch in 1955, and they eventually moved out to California, where they
started their family of three children, Debbie, Jeff and Teri. Mom was a very
giving wife and mother and was there for everything we could ever need. She
eventually became a waitress, where she absolutely shined. It was something she
truly loved to do and she was loved by everyone she served. Applied for
sainthood, awaiting the final paperwork. This is how we felt about Mom ... Our
mother (The Queen Mum, as we call her) was a beautiful woman inside and out,
who was loved by all. She always wore a smile and would give everything of
herself if it would help another in need. She was the Kool-Aid mom and was
always there for us and for all our friends. She had so much love inside of her
that it overflowed onto everyone she met. She was a grandma to all children and
a true friend to those who were lucky enough to know her. We received a true
blessing by having her as our mom. God broke the mold when he made her.
Everything that we are, the very best parts of us, are from her. A gift of love
she gave us that will live in each of us forever. She was loved so very deeply
and will be missed, but we know that she is with God and together again with
our dad.
Janet is survived by her three children, Debbie Simmons and
husband, Ken, of Logandale, Nev., Jeff Burch and wife, Angie, of Azusa, and
Teri Dzida and husband, Steve, of Oak Hills.; her granddaughters, Jenifer Aki, Samantha Blankenship, Ni-cole Simmons, Megan Simmons, Danielle
Burch, Emily Simmons and Taylor Dzida; grandsons, Anthony Burch, Baby Kenny
Simmons, Kaluna Aki (Jenifer’s husband), Michael
Blankenship (Sa-mantha’s husband) and Daniel; her loving sisters,
Shirley (Pat) Brandt, Merle Jenkins and husband, Ron, Cleo (Bob) Stoffle and
husband, Stan, and Jean Hood.
She will join in heaven her pre-deceased loving husband, Donald;
her parents, Bennett and Alma Brustkern; her brother, Joseph (Buck) Brustkern;
her sister, Delores (Doug) Crinklaw; and her brothers-in-law, Johnny Brandt and
Bob Hood.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Victor Valley

+2005, La Jolla, San Diego Co., CA, Obituary
August 13, 2005 [Saturday]
Part psychologist, part philosopher, and every bit an educator, Powell Blankenship viewed a tennis lesson as an adventure in
self-empowerment. His goal, he once said, was first to enhance each student's
self-image. Should he succeed in that, he believed he could attain his
secondary objective: "To teach them to play tennis as well as they
can."
Mr. Blankenship,
regarded by many as the thinking man's tennis pro, died Monday at Scripps Green
Hospital in La Jolla, CA. He was 72.
The cause of death was cancer, said Doug Bradley, a tennis coach who took his
first lessons from Mr.
Blankenship.
One of San Diego's most experienced tennis instructors, Mr. Blankenship taught the game for more than 50 years to
players of all ages and abilities. With seemingly timeless wisdom and
adaptability, he endured changing eras and styles by emphasizing the intangibles
especially mental awareness. In 1998, Mr. Blankenship,
who taught for most of his career at the Pacific Beach Tennis Club, was honored
as Male Pro Coach of the Year by the San Diego District of the United States
Tennis Association. "Powell was an intellectual type guy, a deep
thinker, who knew all the whys and wherefores," said Bill Bond, who
recently retired as head tennis pro at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.
"He was a terrific teacher, for many years one of the best around. He seemed
uncomplicated and laid back but he was very serious. He would do anything and
everything he could to get a point across." With children, that could mean
performing magic tricks to hold their attention. "He was quite talented at
magic," said Ben Press, the dean of San Diego tennis pros. "With
kids, it's not a question of age but interest span. Powell knew how to
entertain them."
Mr. Blankenship, who excelled in tennis as a junior player, began
coaching in 1950 as an assistant for the Coronado Recreation Department at
Hotel del Coronado. "There were only about a dozen of us teaching in the
early days," Press recalled. "We would meet and discuss different
aspects of teaching tennis, and Powell was way head of us with kinesiology (the
study of mechanics and anatomy in relation in human movement). "It has
come to the fore now, but he was way ahead of his time."
Fred Kinne, who began teaching youth tennis in San Diego in 1952,
said: "Powell taught manners as well as tennis. He was the best sport in
tennis I ever saw." Mr. Blankenship defined his teaching philosophy
succinctly: "Thought creates form. Attitude creates efficiency.
Imagination creates effectiveness." To expand his teaching parameters, he
once consulted an ancient Asian book, the I Ching, or the book of changes, for
inspiration. His students over the years included Brian Teacher, winner of the
1980 Australian Open and No. 7 in the world in 1981; and former University of
San Diego standouts Ian McLaughlin and Peter Herman. His mission, as he saw it,
was not to develop champions so much as to enable people to enjoy the game and
reach their potential by engaging both mind and body.
"One thing I learned from him is that there are many ways to
teach tennis," said Bradley, whose first tennis lessons were from Mr. Blankenship
at Pacific Beach Junior High School. "Some people learn better visually,
some by words. "Powell understood this. He taught me to teach differently
to different people."
"His older brothers didn't think he was good enough to play
tennis with them," said Betty Blankenship, his sister-in-law. "But he
kept practicing and taking lessons, and then they wouldn't play with him
because he was so good." Mr. Blankenship, a lefthander, sharpened his game
under the tutelage of former Wimbledon doubles champion Les Stoefen; Eleanor
Tenant, who also taught Bobby Riggs; and former Hotel Del pro Carmack Berryman.
At La Jolla High School, his two loves were music, especially playing the
trumpet and trombone, and tennis. He was good enough on the court to earn a scholarship
to UCLA.
He turned it down to stay at home and care for his widowed mother.
As much as he loved tennis, he didn't feel deprived. He had soured on the
competitive aspect of the game, his sister-in-law said. "Powell didn't
like to see the other guy lose," she said. "In a tournament, he would
be wiping out his opponent, then he would let down and lose games. He never had
the drive to be competitive." Mr. Blankenship
worked various jobs, including one at the Convair Division of General Dynamics,
while teaching tennis. Eventually, he earned a secondary teaching credential at
San Diego State College. For 19 years, he taught math at Pacific Beach Junior
High, where he offered free tennis lessons to students in the mornings before
class. When he retired from the classroom in 1980, he became devoted to tennis
full time at Pacific Beach Tennis Club, where he taught until two weeks before
his death.
Mr. Blankenship was
born April 24, 1933, in Oceanside CA and grew up in La Jolla CA.
Mr. Blankenship
outlived three older brothers, William, Fran and John.
Survivors include a sister,
Margaret Beason of San Diego.

Beach Tennis Club. Friends are hoping to create a memorial fund to pay for a
plaque or bench in his honor at Pacific Beach Tennis Club
