Published as Delta County Independent (CO) - October 9, 2019

Edward Monroe VanDenBerg, February 13, 1937 - October 3, 2019

Eddie was born at his grandparents' (Herb and Bertha Blankenship’s) in Austin, Colorado, to Ada Campbell. His father Edward Campbell was drowned in the Sweetwater River in Idaho, where the young couple were working, the previous August. Later in 1937 the young widow married John VanDenBerg; Eddie was given the VanDenBerg name at that time.

Eddie has three brothers – Dan (deceased) of Lakeview, Oregon; Gary of Verndale, Washington; and John of Cedaredge. He also has one sister: Nancy Selby of Delta.

Eddie graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1955 and moved to Oregon to work in the plywood mills.

Eddie met Jill Stradley on Valentine's Day 1954 and two years later on that same date, she became his wife. They enjoyed 63 years of married life, mostly spent in the North Fork Valley of Colorado, though there were a few years in eastern Kansas.

They were the parents of Loren (1956), Jeanette (Jan) (1958) and Larry LeRoy (Lee) (1959). Lee died on 11-11-11 from injuries sustained in an ATV accident.

Eddie worked at many jobs — construction, coal mining, lumberjacking, trucking, auto body repair and others. Refusing to be promoted out of his beloved UMWA (the miners' union) to become a "company man" at the mines, he instead became a Federal Coal Mine Inspector. That job protecting miners from unsafe working conditions took him to Pittsburg, Kansas, for a few years but he was fortunate enough to be transferred back to his home in Delta County, where he remained the rest of his life.

Eddie had many interests, loved His Lord and loved the Sunday morning meetings. He also loved antiques, hunting, prospecting for gold and reading and reciting cowboy poetry.

He built a few homes with his brother, John, but his crowning achievement was the log home he built for Jill and where the couple lived for 42 years. He harvested the logs, milled them on his sawmill and did all the construction from top to bottom.

He was an accomplished mechanic, heavy equipment operator, welder, all-round handyman and gunsmith.

He was a great husband, a caring father and a friend to many, many people. He is survived by his wife, Jill VanDenBerg, of Rogers Mesa, Hotchkiss; his son, Loren, of Crawford; his daughter Jeanette (Jan) of Rogers Mesa and Portland, Oregon; his grandson Cyler of Hotchkiss; his granddaughters Celena Gaudern of Elkins, Arkansas, and Tess Kents of Bella Vista, Arkansas; his grandson Mikle Kokes and his four sons of Grand Junction; as well as the other six great-grandchildren: LaTeace Conley and Elizabeth of Fayetteville, Arkansas; John Butler of Bella Vista, Arkansas; and Stella, Minni and Spencer Gaudern of Elkins, Arkansas.

After a long, fulfilling and interesting life, Eddie's final call came Oct. 3, 2019 at about 8:15 a.m. at HopeWest Hospice in Grand Junction. He had suffered a sudden, painless but shockingly rapid three month decline from brain cancer and died peacefully in his sleep just after Jill awakened in his room that morning.

His funeral will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019, at Heritage Hall in the Delta County Fairgrounds in Hotchkiss. He will then be buried next to his youngest son, Lee, at the Garden of Memories in Crawford, Colorado.

2012, Denver City, CO, Obituary

Albuquerque Journal (NM) - August 20, 2012

Mikayla A. Olgaard was born in Powell, Wyoming to Ann and Roger Olgaard, a tiny baby who remained petite throughout her short life. Mikayla was a precocious and vibrate child who displayed a sense of innocent mischief. Her childhood collection interests revolved around Dam dolls (those fury headed plastic trolls) and "Garbage Pail Kids". She maintained a well-stocked kit of tools to emulate Harriet the Spy and never was a Christmas gift a surprise.

At a young age she lost her father, Roger, in a tragic accident and moved to Rapid City, SD with her mother. In Rapid City she found a second father in Doug Blankenship. As she matured she developed a love of the outdoors and despite her diminutive size she was game for anything.

She graduated from Stevens High School in Rapid City, SD and began university studies at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota. A longing of warmer climes and the topography of the Rockies, she transferred to the University of Colorado, Boulder where she received a degree in mathematics. She spent several years working for Penn Schoen Berland and continued her studies at the University of Denver receiving an MBA in 2008.

A childhood passion for jewelry eventually blossomed with the development of a jewelry line through her company Continuum, an effort encouraged and championed by her partner, Keith Clasen.

Mikayla is survived by mother Ann Blankenship, father Douglas Blankenship and brother Nolan Blankenship.

She also leaves behind her fraternal grandmother, Sonora Olgaard; grandparents, Nolan (Sam) and Garnet Blankenship; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Memorial services were held August 15th in Denver, CO at the Evans Chapel on the Campus of the University of Denver. A celebration of life for Mikayla will be held at a later date in Rapid City, SD.

+2013, Denver City, CO, Obituary

Published in Daily News-Miner on July 15, 2013

Guy Ervin Blankenship passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 8, 2013, in Denver, Colo., after a long battle with various illnesses. He was born Feb. 5, 1947, in Lake Jackson, Texas, to the proud parents, Harold Blankenship and Rosemary Jester.

In 1949, Hal moved Guy and his younger brother Gary to Denver after the death of Hal's young wife, to be close to family. Growing up in Denver, Guy would excel as an athlete, earning both a football and track scholarship to Northeastern Junior College.  Ranking ninth in the nation at Division II in the shot put, he then went to University of Colorado at Boulder, where he double majored in English literature and physical education. In 1971, Guy packed up his young wife, two coyotes and three cats and drove north to Fairbanks to accept a teaching position and fulfill his dream of living in the Arctic and mushing dogs. Guy was a man of rare character; the only attribute that rivaled his physical strength and work ethic was his intelligence. In everything Guy set his mind on, he excelled.

While teaching at Two Rivers Elementary he, "Mr. B.," developed such a competitive cross-country ski program that the trails there are still dedicated to "Mr. B." In dog mushing he was a three-time North American Freight Race champion, president of Alaska Dog Mushers Association, manager of the Dog Mushers Hall and seven-time finisher of the Iditarod. All seven finishes were in the top 20, including several seventh-place finishes.

He was a skilled craftsman and worked as a construction superintendent for Baron Construction, overseeing multimillion-dollar contracts. Eventually, Guy would move back to Denver to work as a self-employed craftsman. Guy lived his life to the fullest, with the rare courage to pursue his dreams. He was strong, tough, stubborn, driven, goal-oriented, passionate and intelligent. He was a man who pushed others to work harder, to be better. Rare is the man that would recite Chaucer's Canterbury Tales in Middle English yet teach his son how to swing a hammer and the proper words to say if the hammer should strike a thumb. You will be missed, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James and Ethel Hague; father and stepmother, Harold and Shirley Blankenship, and brother, Gary Blankenship.

He is remembered by his two sons, Nathan and Christian Blankenship; his sister, Glenda Blankenship, and countless others whose lives were touched by this extraordinary man.

He died of cancer only a week after being diagnosed, three days before his 57th birthday. “He applied great business sense to what needed to be done,” said Joe Blake, chancellor emeritus of the Colorado State University System. Blake served as the chamber’s CEO and president during Blankenship’s tenure as COO.

Blankenship joined the Mile High United Way in July 2012 following 12 years at the chamber. He had previously served as vice president and general manager of Fruit of the Loom’s North America and European activewear divisions. “Robert’s impact on the chamber will live far beyond any of us — he created a financially sound organization and then grew it beyond all expectations,” said Kelly Brough, the chamber’s president and CEO.

Brough also said that Blankenship was best known for his “heart,” both with his friends and colleagues. Tamra Ward, president and CEO of Colorado Concern, echoed that sentiment and described Blankenship as a big man with an even bigger heart. “There was nothing that he wouldn’t do for anyone,” said Ward, who worked with Blankenship at the Chamber.

+2013, Denver City, CO, Obituary

Robert Reid Blankenship was born July 24, 1956, in Jackson, Tenn., and was the third of four children born to James Franklin and Ivary Blankenship.

He is survived by his wife, Andrea, whom he met in 2003. The two were together for 10 years and married earlier this month on July 8. Andrea Blankenship said her husband always liked to do things “big,” especially when he could put on a show, such as the time he drove his motorcycle into the chamber building.

Then there was his proposal. Instead of simply getting down on one knee, he took Andrea on a private plane and proposed as the couple flew around the mountains. “I thought (the flight) was a present for my 40th birthday,” Andrea Blankenship said. “He always went big.”

Aside from his extensive business experience, Blankenship was also known for his sense of humor. “He had the ability to turn a phrase in a sly and humorous way with a little country barb and charm and wit that was memorable and hilarious and made the point as it always did,” Blake said.

He is also survived by his two brothers, Dwight and Douglas, and his sister, Diana.

Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, located at 1820 Broadway, at 4 p.m Thursday.

Dorothy Jean Blankenship Brown McManaman

Dorothy Jean Blankenship was born April 13, 1927, near Belle Plaine, Kansas. She was the last of Willie Maud Hammond and Edward Blankenship’s 13 children. She lost both parents by age ten and was raised by her brother and his wife, Earl and Pamelia Blankenship. She passed away on June 6, 2016, at the age of 89. Her ashes will be interred in Alva Cemetery at a later date.

She graduated as valedictorian from Belle Plaine Rural High School, class of 1945. Dorothy soon met and married Robert Brown on June 7, 1945. Once Robert's service was competed with the Merchant Marines, the couple returned to Beaver, Oklahoma, where Robert began his career in construction. They had three children, Reta, Adair and Dennis, before moving to Alva in 1953. Shortly thereafter the Robert R. Brown Lumber & Construction Company was established with Dorothy as co-owner and full working partner. Her intelligence, capable management and hard work helped the company prosper over the next 24 years. She was equally dedicated to her family – she was an excellent cook, maintained a succession of 12 beautifully decorated homes, and loved her flowers. Dorothy was a member of the First Methodist Church of Alva and P.E.O. She earned her private pilot's license in 1970.

After Dorothy and Robert divorced in 1977, she managed a large apartment complex in Oklahoma City. In 1981, Dorothy married Edward McManaman; they resided primarily in Oklahoma City area until Ed's death in 2004. Jennifer Blankenship August 24, 1960 - June 23, 2016

Jennifer Blankenship was born August 24th, 1960, on the same day, 11 years apart, as her big sister, Linda, and only four days, and 8 years apart, from her other big sister, Jeri. Jennifer grew up in Lakewood, Colorado, and spent much of her time at the home, her parents maintained, for 60 years.

Jennifer loved the outdoors, and like all the Kelley children, held a special love for all creatures great and small. She had many close friends, including several from her early years, that she held for her lifetime. Jennifer had a great sense of humor, lightning wit, and optimistic view and wonder of life. Her brother Tom, and her two sisters, were inseparable growing up, and wherever they were in their lives, they always shared a deep bond. Jennifer's Mom & Dad, Irene and Tom Kelley, were not only wonderful parents, but primary caregivers for her, in their later lives.

When Jennifer developed symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis in her 20's, she immediately began to battle it with courage and will to beat the disease. She will be remembered for this, fighting for her independence, as well as her strong desire, to seek a cure. When she had an MS event, she fought back with every tool or weapon she could, to regain her strength, and to maintain her independence. She did so, to remind herself, and all of us, that she was not going to allow the disease to conquer her.

Even with MS debilitating her, Jennifer had opportunity to travel the world. With her supportive friends, she became a certified diver, parachuted from airplanes, and went on expeditions from Africa to Europe. Much of her flying was in a private plane, where she developed a strong knowledge of aeronautics. She even survived a plane crash, and laughed it off saying, "If MS could not take her, neither would a crash!"

Jennifer was generous, supportive, and caring of other peoples' challenges. Her death, on June 23rd was unexpected, and painful, for all.

In her passing, it is the family's desire, that those who loved, befriended, or cared for Jennifer, celebrate her life, and in knowing what she had dealt with for so long, live each and every day to the fullest, in happiness and grace, knowing she would want that for you. May her beautiful smile and quick wit, bring those who knew her, warm thoughts and rich memories, to last a lifetime.

The family plans to hold a private memorial service and interment, of Jennifer, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, at a later date.

+2017, Grand Junction, Mesa Co., CO, Obituary

Arvada Press (Golden, CO) - August 3, 2017

Shirley Elaine McBride (Self) died July 16th surrounded by her loving family at HopeWest in Grand Junction, Colorado. She died after a long illness. Shirley Elaine McBride was born July 20, 1956 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to George Ray McBride and Mary Alice Sawyer.

When she was four she moved to Westminster, Colorado and lived there until she was twenty-nine. She married Michael Jon Blankenship October 31, 1980. From this union they had three children Amber, Jesse, and Deja Blankenship. They later divorced in 1986. She married Laine Franklin Self August 16, 1997. They were together for a good many years but later divorced in 2015.The city life was not for her so when she got the chance moved to a smaller town.

Talk about a change, she moved from Westminster to Opal, Wyoming with a population of 126 people in 1985. The town consisted of one main building which had a tiny grocery store, one gas pump, and a bar complete with strippers. It took a lot of getting used to but once she did she loved the small town life and decided never to live in a big city again.

She divorced Michael around this time and moved to Grand Junction, Colorado where she lived for 7 years. She was a single parent for ten years and though it was really tough at times she learned two important things to carry her through life. Patience and a sense of humor.

While in Grand Junction she attended Mesa State University for two years for computer programming. She was a volunteer for two years on the crisis line for domestic violence. She also taught grade school children how to use computers for two years. She then moved to Craig, Colorado and fell in love with the town. She loved the closeness and caring of people in Craig. She later moved back to Grand Junction in 2013 when her health declined but her heart was still in Craig. She loved the outdoors and would loved camping and gardening and anything having to do with the outdoors.

Her hobbies were genealogy, craft work, geocaching, reading and gardening. She worked assorted jobs over the years but her favorites were working for the Moffat County School District for 8 years. Another was KSTR Radio Station in Grand Junction where she was a receptionist and what a fun job that was. Her first job was at the First National Bank of Denver as a check processor. This was located in downtown Denver so what a challenge that was.

She was a very sweet and caring person with a great sense of humor. She would go out of her way to help friends in any way she could. She will be sorely missed. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchild. They were the most important things to her.

She was preceded in death by her father George Ray McBride.

She is survived by her mother Mary McBride, sister Teresa McBride, brother Richard McBride, three children Amber (Jim) Cooper, Jesse Blankenship, Deja (Justin) Craig, her five grandchildren Shay and Nathan Cooper, Tiyana Henry, Jayah and Zoey Craig, and her great grandson Torin Cooper. She is also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be a Celebration of Life Ceremony this summer.
