+2016, Easton, Fairfield Co., CT, Obituary

Easton Courier (CT) - December 1, 2016

Jean B. Bromer was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on February 2, 1919, Jean was the fifth child of Winifred Blankenship , a musical mother, and Walter D. Blankenship, a general medical practitioner, who often took little Jean around on his visits to patients in the countryside, where she learned Pennsylvania Dutch playing with Amish children.

This second language proved useful later in life when she traveled to Lancaster County to buy quilting supplies. Hearing conversation in "Dutch" about the Connecticut license plate from the clerks in the quilting store, she let them know that she was born in Lancaster, understood what they were saying, and expected the local price.

Jean was always a tenacious and unshakeable negotiator. She made hundreds of quilts, including one for every family wedding, and baby quilts for each of her great grandchildren and her one great-great grandchild. She also taught quilting and ceramics at home, at the Easton Senior Center, and in nursing homes, continuing into her late 80s.

Jean was a talented musician — playing the marimba professionally and at home, to the delight of her family. She lived in Easton since 1969, serving as Democratic Registrar of Voters for 17 years.

Jean Blankenship met John Bromer, who went to college with her older brother, when she was 14. A year later, they eloped to Maryland. They were married for 73 years — traveling the world together and charming most everyone they met. John passed away in 2008.

Predeceased by her parents, sister Marion, brother Albert and baby sisters Ruth and Winifred as well as her husband.

Jean is survived by her children Michael Bromer and his wife Carolyn of Illinois, Barbara van Achterberg of Easton, John Bromer and his wife Gail of western North Carolina, and Jim Bromer, her primary caregiver, of Easton. She had 11 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Her nieces and nephews loved Jean also. Jean is remembered by friends and family as an unflagging source of common sense and good cheer.

She enjoyed people, and her delight in their company made guests to her home feel wanted and welcome. She could entertain visitors for hours with finely spun anecdotes about the lighter moments in her and her husband's life. Jean will be warmly remembered and missed.

Known as "Ginny", she was the beloved daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence C. Van Blarcum, formerly of Pelham Manor, New York, and Boynton Beach, Florida. She was born on August 14, 1930, in Syracuse, New York.

Her father ("Van"), a noted football star, was an Executive Vice-President with the McKesson & Robbins company, and her mother, Ellen, daughter of former Mayor of Syracuse, Walter R Stone, was a homemaker. The family summered at their cottage on Lake Ontario, which Ginny often spoke of fondly.

Ginny attended high school in New Rochelle, New York, and went on to attend Mount Holyoke College, where she met Arthur H. "Harry" Lamborn, a Williams College man, of Greenwich, Connecticut. They were married in 1950. Following college, they moved to Mount Vernon, New York, and her husband began his career as a broker-trader with Lamborn & Company on Wall Street. After welcoming three children into the world, the growing family moved to Darien, Connecticut, in the mid-1950s, where their fourth and last child was born.

A gifted pianist, Ginny organized the neighborhood carol sings every year, where many enthusiastic children would gather at her home to practice the carols while she played the piano. Ginny also enjoyed painting with oils, in her own Impressionistic style. She enjoyed the local life with her family in Darien, including outings to Weed Beach and Pear Tree Point, and frequent neighborhood get-togethers. The family also spent memorable summers vacationing in Maine on Penobscot Bay, as well as on Martha's Vineyard.

Ginny enjoyed traveling far and wide with her husband, where his business as a sugar and coffee trader would take them to Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Japan, and all over South America and Europe. At home, she was a superb hostess to friends and business associates alike, who visited from around the world.

In January of 1964, the family moved to New Canaan, Connecticut. Ginny became an avid bridge player. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and served as a Deacon. She was active in the New Canaan Women's Club, and served as President.

2011, Southbury, New Haven Co., CT, Obituary

Voices (Woodbury, CT) - August 24, 2011

Florence Berdinia (Dougherty) Irete, 99, died peacefully Wednesday, August 3, at River Glen Health Care Center with her family in attendance. She was the widow of Joseph L. Irete. Mrs. Irete was born January 29, 1912, in Philadelphia, Pa. She was adopted in 1914 by a farm family who lived and worked on a large estate called "Hibernia," near Downingtown, Pa.

It was during her childhood years there that she developed her deep love of country life, nature and all animals, especially horses and cats. She could drive a pony cart or a sleigh as a young girl. In June 1932, she married Joseph L. Irete, who owned a pharmacy in Paoli, Pa. An accomplished kick-wheel potter and self-taught artist, she opened her first pottery shop and studio in West Chester, Pa., in the mid-1930s. She made special event plates, bowls and mugs with personal inscriptions using Pennsylvania Dutch motifs. She also imported Mexican pottery and glassware that was popular at the time. During this decade she began a life-long commitment to volunteer her time to help both people and animals in need. She taught crafts and pottery programs in veteran's hospitals and state mental institutions in Pennsylvania and in Florida. She was very active in the ASPCA and the Humane Society wherever she lived. She was in the Red Cross Motor Corps all of her adult life. She worked as a blueprint draftsman for the Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville, Pa., during World War II. In 1946, the family moved to rural Florida, where they built and lived in a log house with a walk-in fireplace. They had cats, a dog and a horse and would soon learn about scorpions, rattlesnakes and hurricanes. This was an adventurous time for the whole family. She joined the Florida Craftsmen in the 1950s. She experimented with adding grains of beach sand to clay and selling a line of hand-made jewelry called "Sandee." She also designed and made wrap-around strapless dresses called "The Florong," silk-screening her own designs onto the fabric. She was involved in Brownies, Girl Scouts, PTA and piano lessons for her daughters. She and her husband returned to Pennsylvania in the early 1960s and bought a 1768 former general store/tavern in Kimberton, restoring the stone building as their residence. The old general store on the first floor, with its weathered wooden bins and fixtures, became the Kimberton Pharmacy. She was always hands-on with home improvements and was totally involved in this project. She used to say, "I want to wear out, not rust out." It was here that she became active in environmental issues regarding the use of herbicides in a nearby pond that caused the death of numerous wild ducks and geese. She had read "Silent Spring" and was determined to get an answer when others were afraid to speak up. She retrieved a goose and drove it into Philadelphia for analysis along with a sample of the herbicide. That was the beginning of raising the consciousness of people in Kimberton about the dangers to wildlife when using these substances. After her husband retired, they had more time to visit family in Florida, Nevada and New Mexico. She became a widow in 1980. A year later she bought a small RV and hit the road with her Siamese Cat "Ki." She visited old friends and made new ones in Florida, New Mexico and Pennsylvania. She finally fulfilled her desire to see the Pyramids along the Nile. She always had her small kiln and enjoyed making clay dollhouse miniatures of tiny cups and saucers and cats and dogs curled up by the fireplace. Into her 90s, she could still play a few bars of "Nola" on the piano. She enjoyed reading non-fiction and loved her many books. Her inquisitive mind persisted into her last month of life.

She leaves her daughters, Judy M. Irete and son-in-law, Robert L. Curtis of Woodbury, and Anne M. Irete and son-in-law, Ross Blankinship , of Placitas, N.M.; her granddaughter, Tanya Eifert Michetti, and grandson, Joseph Michetti, Jr., both of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., a great-grandson, and a great-granddaughter, Kristinia Michetti Compton and her husband, Jason, and son, Preston, of Louisville, Ky.

She was pre-deceased by a great-grandson, Coty Eifert.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.
