Alden L. Howard Sr., 83, a retired engineering representative for
the Smithsonian Institution who earlier worked for the old Bureau of the
Budget, died Monday at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda after a heart attack and
stroke.
A native of Newark, N.J., and a longtime Washington area resident,
Mr. Howard was the last surviving grandson of Gen. Oliver Otis Howard, a Civil
War officer who headed the Freedmen's Bureau after the Civil War and founded
Howard University. The institution is named for Gen. Howard. After graduating
from the University of Michigan's college of engineering in 1920, Mr. Howard
worked as an engineer in New Orleans for about 10 years. He then worked for the
Department of the Army before joining the old Bureau of the Budget in 1935,
where he was a senior investigator. He also worked for the Navy Department here
before becoming a buildings management construction representative for the
Smithsonian in about 1951. He retired from there in 1961. Mr. Howard served in
the Army during World War I. He was a member of the North Chevy Chase Christian
Church and Trinity Lodge No. 41 of the Masons.
Survivors include his wife, Lorene S., of Washington; two sons,
Alden L. Jr., of Adelphi, and Oliver Otis III, of Silver Spring; a daughter, Ailon Blankenship of Marion, N.C.; a step-daughter, Esther L. Huriaux of Chevy Chase; three grandchildren, four
step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren.
