Cape Girardeau Co., MO Obituary
https://www.fordandsonsfuneralhome.com/obituaries/John-Blankenship-12/#!/Obituary
On August 11, 2020, John Calvin Blankenship, loving husband and father of 4 children, grandfather of 10, great
grandfather of 15 children and 1 great- great grandchild, passed away at the
age of 86. He was born in May, 1934, son of Joe F and Nellie F Blankenship, in Scott County Mo.
John was raised during the shadows of the great depression. He
started his work life early as a kid sitting pins in the local bowling alley
and other jobs to earn money to buy the first family car. He married his high
school sweetheart, Marilyn Joy on April 5, 1953. Together, for 67 years, they raised their
two daughters and two sons.
John served in the Missouri National Guard from 1952 to 1961. The
owner of Blankenship Sinclair
Service Station in Cape Girardeau for 38 years, people often stopped to watch as
he bathed his horses in the car wash bay as the family readied to go to the
show after work. He was born with a love for horses. Starting with work horses
and mules as a child. His love continued to grow at their family home, the
Cedar Vista Ranch. Raising and training horses was his passion. He loved to
trail ride but also loved to show them at local and state championships. He
definitely believed the smell of a horse was good for the soul.
John loved life and loved to dance. He and Marilyn would often
entertain the crowd jitterbugging at the annual barn dances they would throw
for friends. An avid outdoorsman, he would start or end most any day with a
walk in the woods as he taught his kids and grandkids about nature, learning
the types of trees and species of birds and how to track various animals as
well as the enjoyment of hunting. A life member in the NRA you could count on
his handy pistol being on his side. Yes, this old cowboy loved the smell of gun
smoke. Another of his loves was the Cowboy Church and the joy of fellowship.
John is survived by his children,
Debbie (Neil) Petty, Pam (Bob)Adams, Rick
(Chris) Blankenship and Brian (Laura) Blankenship, 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren
and 1 great great grandchild who will continue to carry his memories. He is

Funeral service will be at 11:00 am, Friday, August 14, 2020, at

Burial will be at Russell Heights in Jackson, with full military honors.
