2020, Issaquah, King Co., WA, Obituary

https://www.flintofts.com/obituary/Florence-H-Blankenship/Issaquah-Washington/1879289

Florence Neoma Houghtby Blankenship, 98, of Issaquah, Washington, died Wednesday, September 23, while in hospice care after a short illness. Born in Milan, Michigan, on July 26, 1922, Florence was the only daughter of Earl and Edith (Drinkwater) Houghtby.

The family settled into a home on Giles Avenue in Blissfield, and Earl owned a machine shop business in town for many years. Florence attended Blissfield schools, graduating from high school as class salutatorian in 1940. She went on to study at Adrian College and the University of Michigan, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1944.

Immediately after graduation Florence enlisted in the US Navy WAVES, where she attained the rank of Storekeeper First Class. She served in Washington, DC, and marched in the 1945 Admiral Nimitz Parade. After her Navy discharge in 1946, she flew to Los Angeles, “looking for someplace warm.” It was a two-day flight from DC to Glendale; Los Angeles International Airport was not open yet. Using her eligibility for the GI Bill, she enrolled at the University of Southern California and graduated in a year with a Bachelor of Science degree in Library Science.

Florence met Arnold Blankenship at a USC football game. He was a Los Angeles Police officer, and they married in 1947, spending 58 years together. For many years Florence worked in the USC Medical Library, cataloguing and caring for their rare and unique medical books. In later years she worked in the libraries of UC San Francisco, UC Davis, Cal State Fullerton and Washington State University. While her two sons were in school, the family lived in Westchester and in Downey, California, where Florence was an active volunteer in her church, school PTA and Scouts. In 1979, after several moves and various business ventures, Arnold and Florence settled on a farm near Onalaska, Washington. She volunteered at the Chehalis Historical Society in that nearby town. In 1987 they moved to Olympia, Washington, where she volunteered to organize and manage the church members’ library at First United Methodist Church. In 2011, Florence moved to Issaquah to be closer to her son James and his family.

Florence will be remembered by her family and friends for her love of books and reading, especially mystery and spy novels; her special holiday baking; her determination to complete every jigsaw puzzle; and her avid television viewing of police dramas, tennis matches and the Indy 500. One of her favorite memories was a trip to the 1991 Indy 500 race with her son Paul.

Florence was preceded in death by her husband Arnold, her two brothers, Harlan Houghtby and Gary Houghtby, and her niece Sylvia Nicholas.

Her survivors include her sons, Paul and his wife Mary, James and his wife Diane, two grandchildren, Evan and Kaye, her brother William Houghtby of Minneapolis, her sister-in-law Jean Houghtby of Raleigh, many Houghtby and Blankenship nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, a step-grandson, Rhett Tallas, and his children.

In honor of her military service, Florence will be interred at Tahoma National Cemetery near Seattle, Washington. Due to the pandemic, a memorial service will be held in the future.
