Courtney “Corky” Blankenship, 7/13/1944 - 2/12/2021

Corky was a Colo. native. Worked as a teacher, and Street Artist. He was an advocate for the LGBTQ community.

https://www.outfrontmagazine.com/trending/aging-gay-lesbian-and-gay-seniors-flourish-in-changing-times/

Corky Blankenship, 67, was also once married to a woman – but his bride was a self-described lesbian who married a gay man for the practical advantages. “You didn’t think about it; it was just what you had to do – you had to play the game,” Blankenship remembers. Blankenship and his wife were married for 10 years, parting ways in the early ’70s after moving to San Francisco – a time and place where an openly-gay lifestyle finally seemed feasible.

But Blankenship soon learned that even inside the world of drugs, long hair and open man-on-man love, there were still games to be played in San Francisco.

A life-long fan of dancing to loud music, Corky Blankenship would let himself go with an abandon that he said frightened the other snobby queens on the dance floor. “I really feel that music, I really get lost in that beat,” Blankenship said excitedly. Though in the eyes of the image-obsessed disco royalty of San Francisco, Blankenship’s childlike dancing – and his very childlike body; he’s 5-foot-2 – were cause for eye-rolling, Blankenship said. “They weren’t ready for that. Everyone danced with their hands down – and I felt inhibited by that. And then the song ‘Express Yourself’ would come on and I’d say ‘fuck em.’ They looked down their noses at me.”

Blankenship eventually retreated from the gay scene, keeping traditional hours and selling homemade wind chimes in San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Warf. He eventually returned to Denver to care for his ailing mother and help out with the family business, a children’s daycare center. “Then it was back in the closet again,” Blankenship recalls, noting the attitude toward gays within the childcare system. “It was just family and business for about 23 years – I didn’t really go out at all.”

After his mother died in 1998, Blankenship ventured back into the world, ending up at the Triangle, a now-closed gay bar northeast of Downtown Denver where someone handed him a joint and pointed him toward the dance floor. “So I started going out dancing once a week,” Blankenship says with a smile, now a few decades older than most clubgoers. Tracks opened a few years later, and going out once a week became three or four times a week.

Now the once-introverted chime-assembler is a social butterfly, hosting pool parties at his home and attracting young admirers on the dance floor with his naturally peculiar moves. “Back [in the ’70s] I got a lot of negative attitudes – now I get no negativity at all,” Blankenship says. “[Young people] are happy to see an older gay person who is still vibrant and having fun,” Blankenship said. “People say ‘oh you’re an inspiration.’ But I’m just doing my thing.”

+2021, Branford, New Haven Co., CT, Obituary

https://obits.oklahoman.com/obituaries/oklahoman/obituary.aspx?n=joanna-massey&pid=197766062&fhid=13044

Joanna Lou Blankenship Massey, Branford, Connecticut, formerly of Carefree, Arizona and Cushing, Oklahoma, passed away, peacefully, at home on February 11, 2021. She was born December 3, 1925, in Bridgeport, Oklahoma, to Burnest and Lois Ann Blankenship.

When she was 13 years old, W.T. Budd Massey bought her a hot dog and walked her home. The rest is history, and so began the makings of a wonderful life. Budd and Jo were married September 10, 1944, and devoted the next few years to service to their country. Joanna worked at Tinker Air Force Base and, later, taught at Hill's Business University, while Budd completed his education at University of Oklahoma. When Budd began his long and illustrious career in the oil and gas industry, the couple made their home in Cushing, Oklahoma. There, they raised son Joseph Kent, and daughter Melanie. The Masseys were a vital part of that community for many years. Jo was not only Budd's support system in what became a successful independent production company, but served in many capacities with the First Methodist Church, Parent Teachers' Associations, Meals on Wheels, Head Start, and other philanthropical and political posts. Meantime, she managed to squeeze in Oklahoma State University, as well as cheering on her children's endeavors and addressing current issues.

In 1974, Budd and Jo began dividing their time between Oklahoma City and, joyfully, Carefree, Arizona. Their lives were full of teeing it up, cutting the rug and entertaining. Their community advocacy continued, and they were avid members of Desert Forest Golf Club and Desert Mountain, while still "going to the office," at 34 Easy Street. They were always quick to open their home, and delighted in sharing the beautiful sunsets, the cherished desert and their companionship with friends and family.

Joanna relished her role as grandmother, always providing encouragement, mentoring, correcting grammar, participating in wicked bouts of games, and instilling a passion for righting wrongs. She embraced each child as the individuals they are, and was rewarded by their adoration of their "Grandjo, Granny, Grandest." Her delight in them was enormous, though she tried, unsuccessfully, not to boast of the joy they brought her.

After Budd's death in 1989, Jo began spending summers in Branford, Connecticut, and, eventually, made that her home. She remained passionate about the beauty of the nature around her, and developed a deep appreciation for the coastal community and its inhabitants. She continued seeking knowledge, be it learning a new word every day, delving into an unknown subject or sharing the advancements of the modern world with the children who were lucky enough to be graced with her matriarchy.

In addition to Budd, Jo was preceded in death by brothers, Francis, Burnest "Bud," Charles Ray and sister-in-law Dolores Burns; and brother-in-law, Raysel Massey.

Joanna is survived by son, Joseph Kent Massey (Leah), Bisbee, Arizona; daughter, Melanie Cameron (Brian), Branford, Connecticut; grandchildren, Dua (Michael) Anderson, Sacramento, California; Elisa (Mamadou) Cameron-Niang, New York City; Sheriden Massey, Kneeland, California; Calla Jo Cameron, Washington, D.C.; Doug (Ally) Cameron, Old Lyme, Connecticut; Jennifer (Michael) Cameron, Denver; and Patrick (Katrina) Cameron, Asheville. JoJo's "greats" continue the legacy: Taylor, Nicholas, Connor, Millie Lou, Adeline and River. No doubt, she will be overseeing the arrival of those about to be born. She leaves behind sister, Gayle (Lee) Bullock, Oklahoma City; sisters-in-law, Esther Blankenship, Titusville, Florida; Amelia Andre, Norman, Oklahoma; Irene Blankenship, Modesto, California; and Beverly Blankenship, Yukon, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews whom she adored, and for whom she served as Communicator in Chief, remembering each one's special events. She was committed to the preservation of family first, and loved sending and receiving emails keeping her clan connected, and remained proud of her title, "Aunt Jo."

In keeping with Jo's wishes, interment will be private at Graceland Cemetery in Bridgeport, Oklahoma, where she will, finally, join her beloved Budd beside the amber waves of grain.

+2021, Lilburn, Gwinnett Co., GA, Obituary

https://everloved.com/life-of/james-blankenship/obituary/

James Larry Blankenship, known by most as Larry, passed away Friday, February 5, 2021 at the age of 78 [August 31, 1942]. Born and raised in Dalton, GA, he resided in Lilburn, GA with his wife, Jean Overton Blankenship (Dalton, GA).

Larry and Jean’s daughter, Susan Blankenship Lockwood, was the center of his world, and the close relationship Susan and Larry maintained was beyond special. Larry loved his son-in-law, David Lockwood, and he would move mountains for his grandson, Dylan Lockwood. Family was the most important thing to Larry, and the love he carried with him and shared with the world for Jean, Susan, David, and Dylan is indescribable.

Larry is also survived by his sister Jane Blankenship Klinger of Lilburn, GA, brother-in-law David Klinger, and nephew Josh Klinger. Larry loved his sister and always took his big brother role seriously, no matter their ages or where life took them.

Anyone who met Larry knew from that very first moment that he was someone special. With his dry sense of humor, Larry could make anyone laugh and feel at home in his presence. Larry was an active member of his church, Cannon United Methodist in Snellville, and a proud supporter of the Brookwood High School Sports Community. He was often seen on Friday Nights in the fall sitting in the stands of Brookwood High School Community Stadium (always on the 50 yard line) cheering on the Broncos, and in the Spring he would enjoy sitting out in the sun cheering on the Brookwood Baseball Team.

There are no better words to describe Larry and what he meant to everyone in his life than what his grandson, Dylan, wrote the day he passed:

Today the world lost one of its most precious souls. My PaPaw went to become an angel in heaven earlier today. Anyone who knew him would say he was as close to perfect as anyone could be. He was kind, sincere, funny and the best grandfather someone could ever dream of. He loved watching ball of all kinds and would never pass up dessert of any sort. Though he’s gone, I know his spirit is still with my family and I, and it will be for the rest of our lives. I just hope as your only grandchild I can live up to be half the man that you were... I love you and I’ll miss you Papaw, until we meet again in heaven.

Larry Blankenship will be missed, but we know he will be with us always, watching and cheering us on from his front row, 50 yard line seat in Heaven.

https://smokeybarn.com/in-loving-memory-obituaries-of-the-week-february-14-2021/

Joyce Blankenship Hollingsworth, age 84, of Springfield, passed away Monday, February 8, 2021 at NorthCrest Medical Center. She was born February 24, 1936 in Nashville to the late Frances W. and Mildred Bellamy Blankenship.

Joyce met Ralph, the love of her life, in high school following a school program. Ralph says he mustered enough courage to go up and speak to her and ask if he could call her. The rest is history as they say and she and Ralph spent almost 70 years together. She is known to all who loved her as “Grammy”. Joyce and Ralph travelled all over the country square dancing with the Springfield Squares. She loved playing Bridge, any kind of card game, Dominos, and listening to the Bill Gaither Trio. Whether at their lake house or at home, she loved sitting in her swing and watching her hummingbirds and flowers. Every morning began the same way … with a Coca Cola and a straw. Joyce was the co-owner of Car and Home Supply, Co. and was a member of Springfield Baptist Church where she cared for the children in the nursery for over 40 years. Despite her illness the past few years, she NEVER complained no matter how she was feeling. Her first concern was always her family members and friends, not herself. According to her family, Joyce had an incredible memory. If she spent any time at all with you – she remembered your family and children’s names, birth dates, anniversaries etc. Known for her potato salad and lemon ice box pies as well as many other dishes, Joyce said what she meant and meant what she said.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 66 years, Ralph Hollingsworth; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Lee and Betsy Hollingsworth and Glenn Mark and Debbie Hollingsworth, all of Springfield; grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Michelle Hollingsworth, Chris and Jessica Hollingsworth, Victoria Hollingsworth, Justin and floral squareLaura Hollingsworth, Blake and Kimberly Hollingsworth and Laura Kay and Allan Crawford. Mrs. Hollingsworth is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 12 pm, Friday, February 12, 2021, in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Brother David Evans and Martin Babb officiating. Burial followed in the Elmwood Cemetery with Michael Hollingsworth, Justin Hollingsworth, Chris Hollingsworth, Blake Hollingsworth, Gavin Hollingsworth, Jack Hollingsworth, Jerry Dozier and Andy Mason serving as pallbearers.
