+2021, Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., CA, Obituary

https://www.pressdemocrat.com/article/news/sonoma-county-restore-founderjack-blankenship-dies-at-83/

On June 28, Jack Blankenship, whose family described him as “larger than life,” died of congestive heart failure at Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital. He was 83.

In the 1940s, Blankenship’s parents left the tiny dust bowl town of Ardmore, Oklahoma with him and his four siblings in tow. They settled in California’s San Joaquin Valley, where his parents – who had been farmers in Oklahoma – hoped to land jobs as they often struggled to provide proper food, clothing and shelter.

Never forgetting his humble beginnings, Blankenship dedicated his life to helping those in need.

Growing up, Jack Blankenship lived without the certainty of a safe home – so he spent his entire adult life ensuring others did not have such worries.

Known as “Mr. Habitat,” he was the founder of the Sonoma County Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, a discount home improvement store that sells new and used furniture and home improvement items. The proceeds from its sales have helped tens of thousands of people in need build their lives in homes of their own.

“I saw him do everything he dreamed of wanting to do in his life,” said his wife, Phyllis. “He had so little growing up but poured so much into the people around him.” He wore many hats in his professional life. He worked as a psychiatric technician, a farmer, a program director, an ordained minister and a nonprofit chairman. His relatives said everyone who knew him viewed him as a mentor and “grandfather.”

Blankenship retired from Sonoma Developmental Center in 1994 as a program director.

In 2001 Blankenship joined the board of Sonoma County Habitat for Humanity, the local organization dedicated to expanding access to affordable housing. Two years later, Blankenship began building what would become the local ReStore resale shop from the ground up. At the outset in 2003, he sold second-hand items right out of his Santa Rosa garage. He’d drive around in his truck picking up knickknacks, tools and furniture or imperfect or leftover construction materials. Blankenship would then resell the items in a yard sale every weekend, his family said. He donated the proceeds from his yard sales to Habitat for Humanity.

Eventually, in 2006, he opened the Sonoma County ReStore, the first retail store benefiting Habitat for Humanity, inside a small warehouse in Santa Rosa. In 2010, ReStore expanded into a larger location at the corner of Industrial Drive and Piner Road, according to the store’s website. Now, ReStore is set in a 17,000 square-foot store and raises money for Habitat for Humanity by selling donated doors, bathtubs, sinks, and other old and new home-improvement items and building materials, as well as gently used furniture and other items for the home. “He didn’t wait till things were lined up and perfect, he just jumped in,” said Lori Harvey, ReStore’s operation supervisor. “He’d often walk into the ReStore with his cane or walker and just look around and smile.”

When the pandemic struck in 2020 and California shut down many non-essential businesses in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus, most of the workers at Sonoma County’s ReStore were furloughed for three months. Every employee received an envelope containing $100 to help as they endured the furloughs, store officials said, adding that the donor wished to remain anonymous. Regardless, everyone knew the unexpected gift came from Blankenship. It was the kind of thing he would do, said Denise Boardman, Blankenship’s friend and a ReStore volunteer for more than 20 years. “He’ll always be Mr. Habitat to me,” she added.

He was slowed over the past decade by a form of leukemia, but he continued to devote time and energy to Habitat for Humanity. “He’s been sick for a long time, but I think his big heart and dedication to ReStore kept him alive,” said Blankenship’s oldest son, Mark, of Santa Rosa. Phyllis Blankenship hopes to continue ReStore with the same level of passion and compassion that burned inside her husband. “I don’t know what life will look like without him,” she said. “My only hope is that I continue ReStore with the same desire as Jack did.”

Mark Blankenship said his fondest memories of his father are fishing and drinking brandy with him as they watched the sunset at the Mammoth Pool Reservoir along the San Joaquin River in the Sierra National Forest. It was a trip the men in the Blankenship family took together every year. It is trip, Mark Blankenship said, he will miss dearly. “We didn’t need to say anything, being there together was enough for us,” he said. “He’s left such a big hole,” he added.

In addition to his wife Phyllis and son Mark, he is survived by son Mike, of Santa Rosa and three grandsons.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. July 25 at the ReStore site, 1201 Piner Road, Suite #500, in Santa Rosa.

Ida Mae Blankenship - June 4, 1952 ~ June 10, 2021 (age 69)

Ida was born June 4, 1952 to Audrey and Willie Blankenship. On Thursday morning, June 10, 2021, as the day was dawning, Ida Mae Blankenship left this world for one filled with lots of animals to pet, and babies to rock. Our hearts are heavy as we grieve the loss of our family member and friend, but Heaven sure is a lot sweeter, with Ida Mae there.

The expression, "To know her, is to love her", comes to mind when I think of Ms. Ida Mae. Her personality was bold and brilliant. She loved with everything in her and if she chose you to be part of her life, you had her favor for life. Ida Mae didn't make friends quickly, as she was calculated in her decisions and was driven by her heart. She could tell if you were someone worthy of her time - -or not. She loved animals wand was a collector of porcelain dolls. Ida Mae was particular about her things...her home...and her heart. She would bond with her friends by playing games, working puzzles, and doing artwork. She enjoyed her neighborhood and sitting on her porch. Ida Mae wanted her Christmas tree up year round. She would say that the lights on the tree made the world prettier, and for Ida, it sure did. Ida was blessed to share in a family that her friends gave her. She watched many a young woman become a mother and then leaped into the role of that young mother's friend and surrogate auntie or grandmother to their child. She loved to babysit, as she would call it, holding the babies, bouncing them, and singing to them as they drifted off to sleep. Ida Mae was a woman of importance who made sure the world knew when she had something to say. She was a leader and advocated for what she felt was best for her own life. She was fierce and devoted.

Ida Mae shared her life with her longtime soul mate, Ed. They would call each other and have visits as often as they could. She would quickly show anyone who asked about Ed a cherished photo she had of him and her together. Ida Mae loved Ed and would ensure those in his life loved him just the same. Ida Mae had formerly worked at Goodwill and was a participant in Special Olympics when her health was better. Ida Mae enjoyed visiting with her long-time friend Darrell. They would reminiscence about old times and making new memories.

Ida Mae had six sisters and two brothers. She grew up in Sandy Hook but spent the majority of her adult life in Morehead.

Ida Mae was preceded in death by her parents as well as two infant siblings, a toddler sibling James Earl, Lucille Blankenship and Jessie Spencer.

Ida Mae is survived by a brother, William Blankenship of West Liberty; two sisters, Myrtle Blankenship of Hazard and Evelyn Ballard of Berea. Several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by Ed, Darrell, the family she shared her life with - the many caregivers and friends at D&S Community Services, Pathways, Horizon Village, and CAKY. She is also survived by her good friend, Jeff, that looked after her needs and her most special friend, that supported throughout her life Mary Beth Baumgardner.

Funeral will be conducted at 11:00 am, Monday, June 14, 2021, at Lewis & Ferguson Funeral Home at Sandy Hook, KY with Elder Landon Bradley officiating. Burial will be at Wrigley, KY.

+2021, Durham, Durham Co., NC, Obituary

https://hudsonfuneralhome.com/obituary/nancy-blankenship-hillsman/

Nancy Helen Blankenship Hillsman, April 2, 1959 - June 12, 2021, was born and raised in Martinsville, Virginia.

After graduating from Laurel Park High School in Martinsville in 1977, she attended King College (now King University) in Bristol, Tennessee, where she met her future husband Philip.  They both often spoke of how much they enjoyed their time there, making lasting friendships.  They graduated in 1981; she received her degree in English. She had many fond memories of her English professors, especially the much beloved Dr. Winship. In fact, she once named one of her cats “Winship”.  After graduation she moved to Knoxville with a friend and worked at a company called Screen Art for two years, her first full time job.

Nancy and Phil were married June 1982 in Martinsville, and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in 1983 where Phil attended medical school for four years. During this time Nancy worked at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences in the development office. She also had an independent gig typing lecture notes for the medical students. These notes were distributed to the entire class after each lecture. She was often amazed at what bad spellers the med students were.  She was passionate about proper English spelling and writing style.

Phil and Nancy moved to Durham in 1986 so Phil could complete his psychiatric residency at Duke University Medical Center. Nancy worked for Duke University as well, in Duke Development, before becoming pregnant with her first child. She then took some time off to raise her family. Their son David was born in 1990, and five years later they had their second child, Amy.

Nancy returned to Duke Development in 2003 in the Corporate and Foundation Relations office and continued to work at Duke until her retirement as Assistant Director of Research and Stewardship in Foundation Relations in 2020. Late in her career she chose to return to school and earned her Master of Library Sciences from North Carolina Central University in 2014. She was very proud of this, having completed her degree while also working full time. She very much enjoyed her career at Duke and often spoke warmly of the team she worked with. She was a founding member of the congregation of Peace Covenant Church of the Brethren in Durham, and provided many years of service to the church, most recently as treasurer. As a result of moving to Durham and working for Duke University, Nancy became a big fan of Duke athletics. She gloried in the wins and suffered in the losses. She really was a deep-dyed fan, and was thrilled to be able to get season tickets for men’s basketball, even if they were on the top row in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Another great love was cooking. She enjoyed every facet of cooking: collecting recipes, reading cookbooks, watching cooking shows, and of course cooking itself. She became known as something of a cookie queen, having won the cookie competition at Duke Development twice. In recent years she was able to visit Sunset Beach regularly, and it was a peaceful, restful place for her. The family would like to thank the health care professionals and others who have helped Nancy over the past several years with her illnesses.

She is predeceased by her mother, Carlene Thomason Blankenship, and her father, Roosevelt Blankenship.

She is survived by her husband Philip Hillsman, her son David Hillsman, her daughter Amy Hillsman Pearce, and her sister Delia Blankenship Olson.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 pm, Friday, June 25, 2021, at Hudson Funeral Home Chapel.
