https://memorial.oakeys.com/william-blankenship/4997677/
William Edward
“Bill” Blankenship, 85, of Vinton, passed away from this
world on Monday, August 8, 2022, to his Heavenly home. Bill was born in Bedford
County on October 16, 1936.
Bill served in
the U. S. Army before starting a 37-year career in telecommunications with
Western Electric, a short retirement, and six more years with AtPac.
The rumble of a
Harley makes the heart vibrate. “Harley Bill” bought his first Harley at the
age of sixteen. His teen years thrummed to the beat of that rumble. One day he
rode his Harley to a church revival where Mary Mattox was singing in the
choir.
Bill
and Mary courted on a Harley. Nothing could part Bill and Mary, and nothing
could part them from that Harley. Except maybe a couple of
kids. Bill sold the Harley to pay for the birth of David. Two years
later, another son, Mike, was born. As the years passed, Bill demonstrated his
devotion to his family. His precious sons grew, and daughters-in-law joined the
family. Harley Bill and his devoted Mary were enjoying the ride of life, but in
1995 a single word put the ride in check, grandkids. Brent, followed by
Spencer, Will, and Drew, became Papa’s new passion. He invested in his
grandsons in every way. He was proud of each of them.
Eventually, it was time for a new Harley.
Bill and Mary rode nearly every day. They joined the Reborn Riders so they
could use their love for motorcycles as a venue for sharing the Gospel of Jesus
Christ. Bill served, as a member of Mineral Springs Baptist
Church, in many and varied capacities, including deacon, and treasurer.
He shared his time and talents willingly, embodying what it means to love your
neighbor. Bill was a man of wisdom. He realized when it was time to trade the
Harley for a trike. He and Mary spent happy days
traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway, searching for the perfect picnic spot.
He was preceded
in death by his parents, Gertrude Tolley and Robert Wallace Blankenship; brothers, Lawrence and Lewis; and his sister,
Elsie Minnix.,
He is survived
by his wife of 65 years, Mary Leigh
Mattox Blankenship; sons, David and Michael; daughters-in-law, Victoria and Angela; and grandsons, Brent, Spencer, William, and Andrew.
Harley Bill
took his last trike ride at the age of eighty-five. On August 8, 2022, he
entered into the presence of Christ. The rumble of his grand heart will live
here in our memories. Harley Bill will ride on.
A funeral
service will be held at 10:00 am, on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Oakey’s
Vinton Chapel with Pastor Bobby Harris officiating. Interment will follow in
Mountain View Cemetery with Military Honors by the U. S. Army. Oakey’s Vinton Chapel.
