Diane L.
Blankenship, age 75, of Helena, February 7, 1948 –
April 22, 2023
It is with much
sadness that we say goodbye to our beloved Diane who entered the kingdom of
Heaven on April 22, 2023. Diane Hanig Blankenship, 75, was born in Minnesota in 1948 to Arlene and Ken Hanig. She was the first of six daughters born into their family. When she was
in grade school the family moved to Kalispell, Montana where her father was the
manager of the Gambles franchise there.
They later moved to Deer Lodge where her parents became the owners of
the Skogmos store and she attended St. Mary’s Grade
School. She graduated from Powell
County High School in 1966 and later attended Montana Tech in Butte.
Following
college she moved to Helena where she worked for the State of Montana and met
the love of her life, Keith Blankenship. Together they made Helena their
life-long home and were married for fifty-two years. They had two sons, Paul (of Kalispell) and David (of Helena) who blessed them with eleven
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Diane was a
gentle soul with many passions and much love to share. Among her passions was quilting. She was an
avid and magnificent quilter, even operating a quilting shop for many years to
help other people design, plan and finish their quilts. There is no telling how
many quilts she made in her life time; we speculate the number to be in the
hundreds. She was actively involved for
many years with Toys-for-Tots and loved walking around the fairground ponds and
watching the geese, ducks and swans. She
enjoyed geo-caching and summer vacations at Swan Lake. She also had a great
love of music, learning to play piano as a child, singing in the chorus and
choir in high school, listening to her play lists daily and, more recently
having ukelele jam sessions with her sisters.
Although, often it seemed there was more laughter than music coming out of
those sessions. The “sisterhood” won’t
be the same without her.
Most everyone
that met Diane found her to be delightful, compassionate, and fun. She was proud of her sons and loved her
grandchildren passionately. She always
welcomed newcomers to her family and made them feel at ease. She especially
loved family gatherings and often times she demonstrated her “sassy” sense of
humor by throwing out a “zinger” here and there.
Being raised in
the Catholic faith Diane and Keith were long time members of the St. Helena
Cathedral Parish where their sons also received their first sacraments. God has
now called her home and she will be missed by all who knew her.
She was preceded
in death by her parents, Arlene and Ken, sister Donna Stevens Doney and brothers-in-law Chuck Stevens, Craig King and Leo
Marble.
She is survived
by her husband, Keith; sons
Paul and David (Autumn); sisters Doreen Ellis, Patty
King (Tom McNeal), Paula Hanig (Joe Schendel), Susan
Wolcott (Jack Wolcott); sister-in-law Diane Marble; grandchildren, Kati,
Desiree, Alyssa, Krista, Patrick, Airk, Elora, Robert, Cadence, Corbyn
and Kieran; nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services
will be held at 12:00 noon on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at St. Helena Cathedral
with a reception to follow downstairs in the church social center. Interment
will be at a later date at the Fort Harrison VA Cemetery.

Roanoke Co., VA, Obituary
Lillian Willis Corron Blankenship, 98, of
Roanoke Co., VA, passed away on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, at home, surrounded by
family. She was born on October 13, 1924, in White Sulphur Springs (WSS),
Greenbrier Co., WV, and was the daughter of the late Frazier Montague Corron and Lillian Gazelle Buckland.
Willis was a
member of Green Memorial Methodist Church in Roanoke, VA. She was raised in WSS
and was part of the 1942 Graduating Class of White Sulphur High School. She
married Darrell Marlowe Rose a year later. They had two children. She was
living in Roanoke by 1947, where she started work for Peoples Drug Store on the
cosmetics and drug counter. She quickly moved up and served as secretary to
District 21 manager, where she retired in 1990 after 42 years, where it was
said she was the heart and soul of the district. She married Joseph Otha Lambert in 1961. He was a dance instructor at Arthur
Murray, and they spent many weeknights dancing around the living room, weekends
at the Elk’s or Moose, as well as competing in dance competitions.
She was a
strong woman that rebounded from her losses. In March of 2000, she was rescued
from her burning home on Carvins Cove Road by Justin
Anderson and Tommy Beckner. They broke through her
bedroom window and stumbled across her on the floor and managed to get her out
that window. She never forgot their heroic deed.
In 2006, she
moved back to WSS, WV, to be close to family, where she lived until June 23,
2016, where she again had to be rescued from her home. This
time due to historic flooding in the state of West Virginia. She was
carried out of her home, that had 3-4 ft. of water
inside, by Josh David Honaker and Jimmy Fraley. She and Jimmy spent that night
with Peggy Bland, due to being trapped by the high water. Josh and Jimmy’s
heroic actions, as well as Peggy’s kindness, will never be forgotten.
Losing her home
in that flood brought her back to Roanoke, where she resided with her
granddaughter, Karen Butler, and husband, Rhendal,
where she was around many of her grandchildren and kept an observant eye on
them. She lived independently up until that time. She was always smiling, had a
great sense of humor, was intelligent, beautiful, and was a perfectionist.
Other than her
parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 18 years, Ottaway Bowyer
“Shorty” Baird, Jr. in 1979; her husband of nearly 15 years, Henry Burton Blankenship, in 1999; her daughter, Katherine
Ann Rose Boltin, 2008; and her siblings, Charlotte
Grace Vance, Frazier Montague Corron, Jr., Robert
Edward Corron, and Mabel Marie Kincaid.
Surviving
Willis are her daughter, Janet Louise Rose Culpepper and her husband, William
“Bill”, of Yulee, FL; sister-in-law, Anna Lee Corron
