Any one that has ever tried to find someone in the SSDI understands the problem of not only the odd spellings of the Family name but the use of odd spelling, nicknames, contractions, initials, etc of the first name. It is much easier to look at a list of names and let the natural computer behind your eye find the one that you’re looking for.

The other problem is that not everyone is in the Index. If someone didn’t take the time to file a death certificate with SS, then they don’t know that they died yet. When I lost my first wife, the Funeral home was supposed to notify, and file whatever needed to be done. Well the must not have followed thru, because she is not in the index.

For the Area Timelines, I used the Address of Record for placement. If missing that, then I used the Address of last payment, and if either of them was missing then I used the State of issues, and put them at the top of the page in the right date file group.

So the last name, and the State in the Address of Record, I get all that use the state even is issued by another state. Then with the last name and the state in the Address of last payment, I take only the ones that don’t have an Address of Record (they will be in the first search for this or another state). Then I use the Last name and the state in the State of issue box, and then only use the ones that do not have an Address of Record or Address of last payment, this will get the rest of them for that state.

Compiling these three searches for each state, I should have everyone for that state, without using the first names. The thing to note here is that Address of Record is not always the death location, and Address of last payment is not always correct either, it might be to whoever is handling the Estate.

As for the Odd spellings of the family name, I’ve compiled this list of all none ‘EN’ or ‘IN’ spellings that I’ve found so far. As always if you find one that I didn’t please pass it on.
