Sherrill Ward, a retired trainer who had developed one of the top
thoroughbred horses of the 20th Century, died Thursday in a Hollywood nursing
home. Mr. Ward, 72, was a native of Miami and saddled his first winner in 1929.
Kenny Noe Jr., longtime racing secretary
for the New York Racing Association and president of Calder Race Course, said,
"Sherrill Ward was one of the finest horseman that I've ever known and one
of the true gentlemen in thoroughbred racing." Luther Evans, turf writer
for The Miami Herald, said, "Ward was a gentleman and a gentle man."
Under Mr. Ward's stewardship, Forego, owned by the Laxy
F. Ranch, won the Widener Handicap in 1974 and 1975 and was named horse of the
year for three consecutive years from 1974 to 1976.
Mr. Ward had retired in 1975 because of arthritis. The Daily Racing
Form listed 15 of the greatest horses of the 20th Century, which included Man
o' War, Citation and Forego. Mr. Ward also trained Summer Tan, which finished
third in the Kentucky Derby in 1955 behind Swaps and Nashua; and Idun, which won the Columbiana in 1959 at Hialeah.
Mr. Ward once said that the man he admired the most in his life was
Earnie Seiler the former executive director of the
Orange Bowl. "He taught me about sportsmanship and I've never known a man
who loved this town more or worked harder to help it develop." Mr. Ward
was past president of the American Thoroughbred Trainer's Association and the
Hall of Fame in Saratoga.
He is survived by a son, Sherrill E.; daughters, Shirley Kunkel and
Sharron Blankenship; 10 grandchildren and one great-
grandchild; and a sister, Mary Pickard.
Repose will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Cofer
Miami Shores Funeral Home, where services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday.
