St. Maries Man Dies As Truck Crash-Lands

A St. Maries man has died and another man was hospitalized after a pickup went over a 60-foot embankment. The driver, Henry L. Blankenship, 71, was driving his pickup southbound on Idaho Highway 3, with passenger Lavern C. Vannatter, 61, on Thursday. The Idaho State Police reported Blankenship lost control on the icy road as he navigated a curve, overcorrected and drove over the embankment. The truck landed upside down in a creek, and Vannatter was partially ejected. He later died at the scene. Blankenship was transported to Benewah County Hospital and treated for lacerations to his face and head.

Ethel Etta Blankenship of Sandpoint, a former Grangeville homemaker, died Thursday of causes related to age here. She was 88. She was born July 17, 1907, in Gentry County, Mo., to George W. and Bessie M. Spainhower. She married Noel D. Blankenship July 13, 1966, at Stites, Idaho. They lived at Grangeville until he died in 1990. She then moved to Sandpoint to be near family members Ken and Lonalee Hoogland. She enjoyed traveling and visiting friends.

No immediate family members survive her. One brother, Frank Spainhower, and one sister, Dorothy Jett, died previously.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Prairie View Cemetery at Grangeville. The Rev. Melvin Wikoff will officiate.

Memorial service for Lorraine Bowman, 62, will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Sandpoint First Lutheran Church. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Bowman, who was born in Gooding, Idaho, died Tuesday. She grew up in Oregon City, Ore., and was a former Oregon State Female Athlete of the Year. She worked in the berry fields. Mrs. Bowman lived in Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina, and worked as a department store model before returning to Oregon City. She worked in local banks before moving to Sandpoint in 1972 and purchasing Connie's Cafe, where she worked with her husband Bill for 22 years. He died in 1994. Mrs. Bowman was a member of the Idaho Travel Council.

 Survivors include three sons, Michael and Eric Bowman, both of Sandpoint, and Ryan Bowman of Sagle, Idaho; a daughter, Teresa Blankenship of Sandpoint; a brother, Lee Kidman of Oregon City; and eight grandchildren, Brandy, Christi, Michelle, Jessica, Jennifer, Ryan, Kenneth and Nicole.

Blankenship, Noel Bee

Noel Bee Blankenship, a long time Camas Prairie and Clearwater Valley resident, died Saturday at his Grangeville home from congestive heart failure. He was 77. Blankenship was born July 11, 1912, at Morton, Wash., to Harrison and Dulcely Blankenship. The family moved to Mount Idaho in 1916. He attended the Rocky Point School east of Grangeville. He worked as a wood cutter and a farmhand until 1942, when he joined the U.S. Army. He served for one year before suffering a lung injury and was discharged on full medical disability. After returning home, he lived at Stites, where he worked at various jobs. He entered the Paradise Valley Shelter Home at Kooskia in 1964. He later moved to Winchester, where he lived at the Winchester Midway Home before returning to the shelter home at Kooskia. He moved to the Prairie Shelter Home at Grangeville in 1984, where he lived until his death. He married Ethel Spienhouser July 13, 1966, at Stites. She survives him at the home. He was a member of the Grangeville Gospel Tabernacle Church.

Survivors in addition to his wife include one brother, Clarence Blankenship of Grangeville; and two sisters, Jane Jinkens of Clarkston and Susie Cole of Junction City, Ore.

Five brothers and four sisters preceded him in death.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m Tuesday at the Noland Funeral Home at Grangeville, with the Rev. Vernon Vance of the Evergreen Assembly of God Church officiating.Burial will be at Prairie View Cemetery at Grangeville.

Longtime Idaho County resident Pansy D. Blankenship died Friday night at her son's home in Grangeville of causes related to age. She was 81. She was born March 28, 1911, in Sprague, Wash., the daugher of Halley and Ada Pierce Howe. The family moved to Winchester in 1924. She worked in a Winchester bakery as a young woman, and also worked in local apple orchards. She married Clarence Blankenship on June 15, 1928, at Republic, Wash. Clarence survives her at their Grangeville home. The couple moved to the Kooskia-Stites area in 1936, where Clarence worked for the U.S. Forest Service, and later for various local sawmills. They moved to Grangeville in 1974, and Pansy worked as a nurse's aide at the Idaho County Nursing Home. She retired in 1978, but remained as a volunteer at the nursing home for several years afterward. Blankenship was a member of the Mountain Shadows Baptist Church in Grangeville, and was a past member of Zenith Rebecca Lodge No. 59 in Stites. She also was a past member of the Stites Baptist Church. Blankenship enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, crocheting and making handmade quilts for family members and friends. She also enjoyed cooking each fall at the family hunting camp in the Elk City area.

In addition to her husband, Blankenship is survived by a daughter, Adah Hoogland of Grangeville; three sons, Alvin Blankenship of Grangeville, Sidney Blankenship of Clarkston, and Leroy Blankenship of Stites; three sisters, Mae Kirkendall of Riverside, Wash., Daisy Finley of Oroville, Wash., and Edith Cotton of Twisp, Wash.; a brother, Kenneth Howe of Tonasket, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Trenary Funeral Chapel in Kooskia, with burial to follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Kooskia.

Clarence Blankenship, 93, a longtime area resident and mill worker, died Saturday at the Busy Bee Home at Grangeville of causes related to age. He was born Feb. 11, 1905, to Harrison and Dulcia Bailey Blankenship at Morton, Wash. The family moved to Grangeville in 1916. He attended school through the sixth grade in the Grangeville area. On June 15, 1928, he married Pansy Dell Howe at Republic, Wash.

She died March 12, 1993. He lived for two years in Republic and then moved to the Kooskia area.He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for many years. In 1945 he went to work at the Ed Folden Lumber Mill at Clearwater, then the Harpster Mill and finally at the Twin Feathers Mill in Kamiah.He retired from the Kamiah mill in 1967. In 1974 he and his wife moved to Grangeville, where he had lived since.

He is survived by a daughter, Adah Hoogland of Grangeville; three sons, Alvin Blankenship of White Bird, Sidney Blankenship of Clarkston and Leroy Blankenship of Stites; 13 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Mac, Noel, Jack, Jess, Leonard and Boyd Blankenship; and six sisters, Ellen Depew, Jane Jenkins, Dorothy Smith, Maxine Peterson, Susie Coles and Rosie Howell.

Visitation will be at Trenary Funeral Chapel at Kooskia from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. at Pine Grove Cemetery at Kooskia with the Rev. Luann Howard of Kamiah officiating.

Melody Jill Wagoner, a lifelong resident of Grangeville, died of a pulmonary embolism Friday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. She was 31. She was born at Boise Nov. 2, 1967, to Neuton and Alta Blankenship Pollan.

She was raised and attended school in Grangeville, graduating from Grangeville High School in 1986. She and James Wagoner Jr. were married July 6, 1990, at Grangeville, where they made their home. She enjoyed bowling and fancywork.

Her survivors include her husband at their home in Grangeville; her mother of Grangeville; two brothers, Douglas Pollan of Harpster and Jeffrey Pollan of Grangeville; and a sister, Leta Strouss of Odeon, Utah.

Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Revs. Billy and Melvin Wikoff of the Grangeville Gospel Tabernacle will officiate. Burial will follow at the Mt. Idaho Cemetery near Grangeville.

Graveside service for Betty Rae Landreth, 76, will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d'Alene. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d'Alene is in charge of arrangements. Born in Oklahoma, Mrs. Landreth died Saturday.

She married John Landreth in 1946 and later moved to Coeur d'Alene. Mrs. Landreth as a member of Coeur d'Alene Christian Church for many years before joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1952. She worked in direct sales for various companies and was a member of Phi Sigma Alpha Sorority. Her husband died in 1986.

She is survived by two daughters, Patrice Munson of Noxon, Mont., and Janiece Saunders of Dallas, Ore.; four sons, Robert and Richard Landreth, both of Coeur d'Alene, John Landreth of Colorado and Dwight Landreth of Great Falls, Mont.; a sister, Roberta Blankenship of California; 28 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Hauser Lake, Idaho Rosary for Carl James "Jim" Schneider, 73, will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Social Hall in DeSmet, Idaho. Burial Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeSmet. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Tekoa, Wash. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Schneider, who was born in Tekoa, died Wednesday. He graduated from Plummer (Idaho) High School and served in the Army in 1946 and 1947. Mr. Schneider worked as a logging contractor in Idaho, Washington and Montana, before retiring in 1996. He married Violet Blankenship and they later divorced. In 1967 he married Carmelita "Carmie" Hendrichx in Coeur d'Alene and they made their home in Hauser Lake. Mr. Schneider was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in DeSmet, American Legion Post No. 143, and the German American Society.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jami Schneider-Brooks of Post Falls, Roxanne Walker of Newman Lake and Jackie Malinauskas of Coeur d'Alene; two sons, Charlie Schneider of Priest River, Idaho, and James Schneider of Hauser Lake; two stepsons, Garry Benner of Kent, Wash., and Joe Benner of Post Falls; two sisters, Sheri Fisher and Jan Mollring, both of Sacramento, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Hayden Lake, Idaho Memorial service for James Madison Blankenship , 88, is set for 10 a.m. today at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Coeur d'Alene. Yates Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Blankenship , who was born in Nebraska, died Saturday.

He grew up and graduated from high school in Colorado and moved to Hawaii in 1928. Mr. Blankenship became a partner in Bergstrom Music Co. in Honolulu before moving to Spokane in 1942. He began a real estate career as an associate with Arthur D. Jones and later owned Blankenship Land Development Co. Mr. Blankenship developed Pacific Heights and Hillsview in Spokane and donated land to the Spokane School District for Balboa School. He moved to his summer home in Hayden Lake in 1960.

He was a board member of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce and served on the planning commission of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce and was a director of the Washington State El Katif Shrine. Mr. Blankenship was a member of the Board of Realtors, the Masonic Lodge, the Episcopal Church and the Hayden Lake Country Club where he served on the board of trustees. He was a past member of the Lions Club, the Empire Club and the Manito Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ada; three daughters, Pamela Anderson and Kathleen Allasina, both of Spokane and Valerie Gonder of California; a brother, George Blankenship of Coeur d'Alene; three sisters, Jean Morgan of Oklahoma, Dorothy Minister of Nebraska, and Tanny Eastman of Colorado; 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Moscow, Idaho Service for Janet B. Martson, 65, will be at 9 a.m. today at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow. Burial will follow at the Moscow Cemetery. Ms. Martson, who was born in Moscow, died Friday from complications related to multiple sclerosis.

She grew up on a farm near Pullman and graduated from Pullman High School. Ms. Martson attended Kinman Business University in Spokane for one year before returning to Pullman, where she worked in the Animal Science Department at Washington State University. She later worked as a secretary for the dean of the Veterinary Science School. She retired in 1969 due to medical reasons. She moved to Latah Health Services in Moscow in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Patty Collins of Troy, Idaho; a son, Bill Martson of Pullman; her mother, Eveline Brown of Pullman; two brothers, Dick Brown of Spokane and Jim Brown of Pullman; a sister, Joan Blankenship of Pullman; and five grandchildren.

Raymond B. Sander, 78, a Lewiston resident and retired owner of the City Club in Culdesac died Friday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston of a heart attack. He was born Oct. 21, 1919, to Bernard J. and Anna C. Delsman Sander at Sweetwater, Idaho.

He lived his entire life in the Lewiston and Lapwai Valley areas. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1941 to 1946. He married Alice M. Blankenship on Aug. 9, 1952, at Lewiston. They later divorced. He owned and operated the City Club in Culdesac from 1952 until his retirement. He was an avid fisherman, particularly for steelhead.

He is survived by one daughter, Jan Sander of Vancouver, Wash.; two sisters, Ethel Westfall of Orofino and Wilma Cleveland of Colton; and two brothers, Kenneth Sander of Lewiston and Wayne Sander of Lapwai.

He was preceded in death by a son, Rick Sander; four brothers; and two sisters.

A funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday at Our Lady of Lourdes with the Rev. James R. Wilson of that church officiating. Burial will follow at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens. V

Graveside memorial service for Charles Boyd Blankenship, 88, will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Osburn (Idaho) Cemetery. Shoshone Funeral Service in Kellogg is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Blankenship, who died Saturday, was born in Missouri. In 1932 he moved to Burke from Missouri and worked for the Hecla Mining Co., Star Mine and then ASARCO at the Galena Mine until retiring. Mr. Blankenship then worked part time for the Wallace Texaco Station and as a carpenter. He was also a bartender at the Smoke House in Wallace and was a member of the Wallace Elks and the Shriners. His wife, Nellie, died in 1990.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Blankenship of Wallace; and two sisters, Vincil Williamson of Kansas and Hope Sepa of Kellogg.
