In Remembrance Michael B. Blankenship. He will be remembered as an outspoken voice for improving the American justice system. Michael B. Blankenship, a police officer turned professor of criminal justice, believed in the U.S. justice system but was not afraid to point out its flaws. Blankenship, 56, died on the Boise State campus Thursday after collapsing while walking to his car, according to his son Ian’s posting on Facebook. Blankenship died less than a month after undergoing gastric bypass surgery. He’d recently joked to friends on Facebook that a slow recovery had left him “so bored that I am watching baseball.” The surgery had made him eager to celebrate his 56th birthday on April 3.

Blankenship was remembered as an advocate for reforming a system that relied too heavily on “incarceration rather than rehabilitation” of people guilty of “low-level crimes,” recalled Monica Hopkins, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Idaho. Hopkins was a student at BSU during the time that Blankenship was dean of the College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs. But they did not become acquainted until 2009, when Blankenship called to congratulate her on a guest opinion she wrote for the Idaho Statesman, in which she pointed out the “diminishing returns” on the millions Idaho invests in corrections, probation and parole.

“He believed in the system, and that people had to pay for their crimes. But that it had to be a punishment that fit the crime.”BSU President Bob Kustra said Blankenship was appreciated by his students and colleagues for his “passion for teaching” and by Treasure Valley residents “who were touched by his outreach and advocacy.” “He will be missed as a vital member of our campus community,” Kustra said.

Blankenship earned a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice and a master’s in public affairs from Western Carolina University. He got his doctorate in criminal justice from Sam Houston State University. Blankenship was a Boise State dean from June 2002 until December 2006, when he joined the Department of Criminal Justice full time. He came to Boise State from East Tennessee State University, where he served as chairman of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology, associate dean of the College of Arts & Sciences and director of the Teaching and Learning Center. His blog, “The Justice Gambit,” provided commentary on criminal justice issues and he was routinely quoted in the media as an expert on crime and social justice issues. An avid motorcyclist, he also wrote a blog titled “Movin’ On.” During his time at BSU’s College of Social Sciences and Public Affairs, he initiated new research centers focused on urban and regional planning, aging and Idaho history and politics. He also helped launch graduate programs in urban and regional planning, gerontology and anthropology.

Blankenship is survived by his wife, Sheila, and son.

2014, Meridian, Ada Co., ID, Obituary

Published in Idaho Statesman on Jan. 31, 2014

Michael Lee Downer passed January 27, 2014 after a brave two year battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. Mike was born to Elmer Lee Downer and Mary Charlene Hankins Downer in Tulsa, OK on June 29, 1955.

Mike lived in various California cities, then moved to Reno, NV and graduated from Hug High School. During Mike's school years he excelled in Math and Science and he played the saxophone in the school's marching band. Mike joined the US Army in July 17, 1974 and served honorably until discharged July 16, 1980. While in the Army, Mike married Nannette Ware in Virginia City, NV. They were stationed in Germany where he worked on the Vulcan and Hercules missile sites. Mike received a Good Conduct medal and Sharpshooter M16 National Defense Service Award. While in Germany, Kara Lee Downer was born on July 7, 1977. July is truly a special month for Mike, as he referred Kara's birth as lucky sevens. Mike and Nan were later divorced.

After Mike's discharge he went back to Nevada and began working as a powder monkey in a barite mine in Elko. Mike loved the outdoors, no matter whether desert or mountains. Mike met Cindy Lee Blankinship on April 11, 1981 in Boise, ID where he and his mining buddies had come for a meeting. It was love at first sight and the rest is history. Cindy's daughter Sandy instantly had Mike wrapped around her finger. Mike and Cindy married on June 16, 1984 in the Rose Garden in Julia Davis Park with Kara Lee and Sandy Lee as flower girls. In September 1984, Mike officially adopted Sandy Lee.

In May 1982, Mike and Cindy bought and built their first house on Cory Street. It was small and the little house quickly became too small with the birth of Curtis Lee on September 17, 1986. The family moved to Meridian in May 1987 and there he passed.

Mike established M&C Custom Construction in 1984 and enjoyed being a general contractor. He built houses with his partner Malcolm Harris, delighted in being creative with tile, marble and rock. Mike could do anything he set his mind to and was a great handy man. He was a hard worker and always helped others. He was never afraid to strike up a conversation with anyone, including strangers, which occasionally wasn't a great idea. Above all else, Mike loved his family and friends unconditionally. He was quick to encourage them to follow their dreams and was always ready to help. He was quick to offer advice on any topic. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, shooting, golfing and his Harley. His hobbies also included pen and ink drawings, working on cars, and most recently landscaping.

Mike is survived by his wife Cindy, mother Mary and step-father Bill, brother Mark, mother-in-law Barbara, daughters Kara Lee and Sandy Lee, son Curtis Lee and 13 grandchildren.

Mike was preceded in death by his father Elmer Lee Downer and step-mother Sharon Downer, as well as his father-in-law Gene Blankinship. Mike will be missed dearly by family and friends.

A service to honor Mike will be held at Cloverdale Memorial Park on Friday, January 31, 2014 at 11:00.

Donald LeRoy Oldemeyer died late in the evening of June 4, 2015. Don was born November 7, 1924, in Brush, Colorado to Clarence L. and Gayle E. Oldemeyer.

He is survived by his wife, Eileen; son, Neal Oldemeyer (wife, Nancy); and daughter, Donna Daniels (husband, Rodger). Don also has seven grandchildren: Lacey Oldemeyer and Briana Le Blanc (husband, Brent); Spencer, Bryce and Kyle Oldemeyer; and Craig and Rick Daniels. He lived long enough to hold his great grandson Ethan Le Blanc last Christmas. Beverly Decker is his remaining sibling.

Don was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Oldemeyer, and his son, Keith Oldemeyer (wife, Barbara), who passed away from cancer in 2008.

Don spent his youth on the family farm and attended the Brush schools. After graduating from high school he enrolled at Colorado A & M (now Colorado State University). His schooling was interrupted by World War II when he spent 32 months in the U.S. Army including time in Europe with the 87th Infantry Division, which fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

After being discharged from the Army, Don returned to college and graduated in December 1948 with a B.S. degree in Agronomy. On Sept. 12, 1948, he and Eileen Blankenship were married in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Together they drove to Pennsylvania where Don attended Pennsylvania State College and received his Ph.D. in Agronomy.

His first job was with the Irrigation Experiment Station at Prosser, Washington as an assistant agronomist. In June 1954 he accepted a job with the Amalgamated Sugar Company at Nyssa, Oregon where he spent the remainder of his professional career focused on sugar beet research, particularly beet seed development. He was very active in the sugar beet industry. A highlight of his career was when he was awarded an Honorary Membership in the American Society of Sugar Beet Technologists along with his brother at the February 1991 biennial meeting.

Don was active in the Nyssa United Methodist Church, serving in several different positions. He was also involved in the Nyssa Lions Club for many years. He served six years on the Nyssa City Council and served as mayor from 1975 to 1976.

Don's hobbies were camping, bird hunting and fishing. He was particularly fond of chukar hunting until the hills became too steep to climb. Rose growing was his favorite part of gardening, while taking pride in his beautiful green lawn.

Eileen Joyce Oldemeyer died the evening of February 1, 2016. She was born August 1, 1927, in Deadwood, South Dakota to Frank and Clara Blankenship.

She is survived by her son, Neal Oldemeyer (wife, Nancy); and daughter, Donna Daniels (husband, Rodger). Eileen also has seven grandchildren: Lacey Schmidt (husband, Ryan) and Brianna Le Blanc (husband, Brent); Spencer, Bryce and Kyle Oldemeyer; and Craig and Rick Daniels. She also has two great grandchildren: Ethan and Mason Le Blanc.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Don Oldemeyer, and son, Keith Oldemeyer.

Eileen spent the early years of her life in South Dakota before moving with her family to Walden, Colorado. It was these early years as a daughter of a forest ranger that shaped her love of the outdoors. Eileen's family eventually moved to Ft. Collins, Colorado where she finished high school and went onto college at Colorado State University obtaining a degree in Sociology. It seems ever so appropriate that her father arranged to have a small lake in the Colorado Rockies named after her, Lake Eileen.

Eileen met her future husband, Don, at college after he had returned from the war in Europe. They were married September 1948 and soon headed back to Pennsylvania State University where Don completed his doctorate studies. She and Don then moved to Prosser, Washington for several years where their son, Keith, was born.

In 1954 the Oldemeyer family moved to Nyssa, Oregon where Neal and Donna soon arrived on the scene. Eileen and Don remained in Nyssa for 55 years before finally moving closer to their grown children in the Boise area.

Above all else, Eileen was a loving and caring mother and wife. It was not until after all of her children were in school did she begin work for the Nyssa School District on a part-time basis – she wanted to be home in the afternoons when the kids arrived back from school. She began her work in the Guidance Counselor's Office and then later in the Elementary Library, the High School English Department, and finally as a full-time secretary for the Superintendent of Schools. She retired in 1985.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, February 8, 2016 at 10:00 a.m., at the Spring Creek recreational facility, 175 E. Calderwood Drive (near Overland and Meridian), Meridian, ID. A brief burial service will follow at 1:00 p.m. the same day at Nyssa Cemetery, Nyssa, Oregon.

Closed the TV business for her husband to take a job with Sikorsky Aircraft. Peggy didn't have to work and her husband was home every night. She could travel with her husband out of town. Five major Mall's in 40 miles of each other. She was in heaven! It was a very happy time for her. At 65 her husband retired to return to Idaho. Peggy was very active in the Caldwell Christian Church. Cassia

2013, Burley, Cassia Co., ID, Obituary

The Times-News, (Twin Falls, ID) - October 1, 2013

Burley •

Theo Greco Harris was born Oct. 1, 1916, in Richfield, Sevier County, Utah, the middle one of seven children born to John Olaf and Laura Ann Sorensen Greco. All of her siblings preceded her in death. Just four days short of her 97th birthday, Theo passed away Friday evening, Sept. 27, 2013, at the Rosetta Assisted Living facility surrounded by her loving family.

This amazing lady was never a patient in a hospital until after her 90th birthday! Theo spent her earliest years in Richfield until the family moved to Idaho by train when she was 5 years old. She began her education at the Southwest School.

Theo married Myron Phillips Harris on Oct. 1, 1939, in Burley. Their family was blessed with seven children, JoAnn (Gary) Thomas of Greeley, Colo., Ray (Shirley) Harris of Twin Falls, Patti (Mike) Blankenship of Murtaugh, Sharon (Milton, deceased) Davidson of Burley, John G. Harris (deceased), Gary (Helen) Harris of Wellsville, Mo., and Michael (Peggy) Harris of Woodland, Wash.

As a devoted lifetime member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she served her church in many ways — as a Primary teacher, a Young Women leader, as well as several years of service to the Family History Library in Burley. Theo helped prepare for the opening of the new Merc Department Store when it opened in Burley, and then worked in the fabric department there for all the years it was open and even helped with the closing inventories. Her associations there helped fuel several handiwork hobbies. She left a legacy of handmade treasures — crocheted bedspreads, doilies, afghans, clothing, Christmas tree ornaments and tablecloths, stuffed dolls and teddy bears, hand-tied quilts and handmade clothing. Over the years, she tried her hand at almost any and every handcraft that she found a pattern for! The handmade teddy bears and dolls that she donated to the police department found their way to children who were injured in accidents, so her talents were shared far beyond her personal family.

Although she never obtained a driver's license of her own, she found great joy in traveling any time she had the opportunity. Whether it was a long vacation to distant states, camping or a picnic in the mountains — or even a ride around town, she was always happy to go! Her children and grandchildren provided many of these excursions for her, creating a wealth of happy memories.

Theo is survived by six of her children as well as 24 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; 60 great-great-grandchildren; and four great-great-great-grandchildren. Theo's family would like to thank her many kind friends for their care and concern for her, especially the past few years. The staff at Rosetta Assisted Living is an exceptionally special group of wonderful people who took care of Mom/Grandma with tender compassion and love for more than five years. They have become like family, and we cannot thank them adequately.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at the Burley LDS Stake Center, 2050 Normal Ave. in Burley. Burial will be in the Pleasant View Cemetery in Burley.

He found peace and comfort amongst the trees, meadows, mushrooms and wildlife. He loved riding dirt bikes and four-wheelers; really anything that went balls to the wall (except his logging truck) and had a high chance of risking life and limb. Adam adored time around the campfire, talking and drinking with friends and family who happened by. He loved his family dearly. Adam loved his dogs, Digger and Sheba, too.

Adam joins his grandparents, George and Alice Payton, and nephew Jason Schaff in heaven.

Adam is survived by his wife, Tina, of Juliaetta; mother Sharon (Bob) Miles of Lewiston; father David Franklin of Asotin; brother Randy (Donna) Franklin of Lewiston; sister Spring Franklin of Lewiston; brother James (Anna) Franklin of Asotin; sisters-in-law Ellen (Lee) Vaterlaus of Salem, Ore., and Cec Anderson of Kendrick; brother-in-law Richard Blankenship and Rita of Kendrick; nieces Traci, Meredith, Mahalia and Sarah; nephews Brad, Taj, Jerome and Peyton; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

2019, Salmon, Lemhi Co., ID, Obituary

Lewiston Tribune (ID) - December 5, 2019

Heaven was needing another hero, so it is with both joy and sadness that we bid farewell to Nicky Leroy Brillon. Nick, as he preferred to be called, was born Aug. 2, 1951, in Newport, Wash., to Donna and Leroy Brillon. Nick was the second of five children. In October of this year, Nick was diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer and sought treatment over the following month to battle the terminal disease. It was on the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2019, that He entered into rest.

Nick was an amazing husband, outstanding father, a loving son, brother, uncle, friend and a once-in-a-lifetime type of boss. Those who knew him will forever be changed by the impact he had on their lives.

In his younger years, Nick would often get into mischief, causing worry for his mother. But she always made sure he had the last piece of pie; after all, he was the only boy. Through his high school years, he enjoyed sports, basketball being his favorite. He decided to forgo a basketball career and opted to join the U.S. Army, serving his country both home and on foreign soils from early 1971 until 1977. Nick had many ventures before, during and after his military service, including marriages, traveling to visit family, working in the oil fields, hanging Sheetrock, mill work and corrections work.

In February 1990, Nick's life would forever be changed with the birth of his daughter, Brittany. Those who would see Nick during those early years always knew that daddy's little girl was always by his side. Brittany was known to out-fish her dad on many occasions. Another miracle came in 1999, as Nick found love and a future family with Melinda Sonnen. It was in March 2001 that Nick loaded up the family vehicle with five children, his future mother-in-law and his future wife to travel to Las Vegas. Melinda and Nick were married March 30, 2001, in a small chapel, with their children and his mother-in-law by their sides.

The family honeymoon was spent adventuring in Disneyland. Throughout the next 18 years, the adventures continued. Often traveling great distances with the kids to the Oregon Coast; to his sister Chris' home to go crabbing or barbecues on the beach; to New Mexico for a wedding celebration and on to Mexico; to Seattle to celebrate a family member's birthday and see the Space Needle. Nick and Melinda spent many years being camp cooks for the family's summer camp, where many would go to the kitchen to have conversations with Nick. Nick was never shy to speak his mind and had a miraculous way of seeing people for who they really were.

Nick worked for the state of Idaho for a combined 29 years, serving in both Adult Correction and, most recently, Juvenile Correction as a safety and security supervisor. Nick's hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, woodworking, cooking, four-wheeling, home remodeling, sharing stories and providing advice.

Nick was preceded in death by his father, Leroy; and sister Kathy.

Nick is survived by his wife of 18 years, Melinda; two daughters, Brittany (Brillon) Sams and her husband, Jake, and Nataiva Klinkefus and her three children, Nadia, Mateo and Amelia; and three sons, Dakota Klinkefus, Dominick Klinkefus, Sheldon Klinkefus and his fiancée, Ashlee, son Liam and bonus son Dustin Blankenship and his family. Nick is also survived by his mother, Donna Derrick, of Orofino; sister Christine Alcock and her husband, Chris, of North Bend, Ore.; sister Karen Howell and her husband, Eddie, of Orofino; and sister Linda Bolen and her husband, Loren, of Pierce; mother and father-in-law Gladys and Larry Sonnen, of Cottonwood; sister and brother-in-law Monica and Archie Nuxoll, of Cottonwood; brother and sister-in-law Melvin and Joyce Sonnen, of Cottonwood; sister-in-law Melissa Sonnen, of Grangeville; and many nieces and nephews.

Nick was never a fan of funerals and would want his family and friends to celebrate his life rather than mourn it. A celebration of life will be held at 11 am, Dec. 14, at Cottonwood Community Hall, where stories and fond memories can be shared in remembrance of a great man.

Rosalie M. Blankenship, 96, passed away Friday, June 28, 2019, in Lewiston. She was born at Cameron, Idaho, to Gustav and Martha (Silflow) Kruger, on June 15, 1923.

She attended the one-room grade school in Cameron and the high school at Southwick. She contracted polio at age 11, but was fortunate it left little damage. On Nov. 1, 1941, she married John T. Blankenship of Leland. They had two children: Larry John and Betty Diane.

John and Rosalie farmed for 40 years in the Cameron-Southwick area. After the children were grown and gone, Rosalie helped on the farm and drove their grain trucks in harvest for 15 years. She always raised a big garden and had berries. At retirement, they moved to Lewiston Orchards. They belonged to the camper club and went on many outings in their RV. They fished streams, square danced, went on tours to Mexico, Alaska and Hawaii and took a Caribbean cruise.

John and Rosalie attended the Lutheran Church in Cameron and then Grace Lutheran in Lewiston. Rosalie sang in the choir and helped make many quilts to send overseas. She spent a season as a cook at the University of Idaho and later worked as a proof reader at the Lewiston Tribune. Rosalie enjoyed sewing, making quilts and especially wall papering and writing poetry. She contributed many articles and poems to the Kendrick Gazette, and many of her poems were published in magazines.

John passed away in 2013. They had been married almost 72 years. Also preceding her in death were her parents; son Larry; and two sisters, Elsie Freeman and Dorothy Sinclair.

Published in Post Register on Nov. 28, 2013

We all lost a wonderful friend and family member when Arline Rutledge died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at her home in Arco, Idaho. She was born in Buhl, Idaho, on Aug. 22, 1941, and graduated from Buhl High School in 1959. Her parents moved to Arco, and she worked at the Atomic Energy Commission, later called INL, before moving to California in 1961.

Wherever Arline went, she made close friends, and California was no different. Friends shared her love of life, animals, sense of humor, intellect and warmth. She was special and made it a point to be an auntie to her friends' children, who adored her in return.

Upon her mother, Beth Rutledge's, death in 1980, her father, Milton Rutledge, drove to California to bring her back to Arco so she could stay with him. He died three months later, leaving her the home that she stayed in until her death. She had a strong sense of family, which was evident each year, as aunts, uncles and cousins could always count on Arline being at the Rutledge family reunion.

Upon her return to Arco, she went to work at the INEL, where she worked for more than 25 years. She worked in many areas of the site and gathered friends at every location. All the people she encountered remember her ready laughter and ardent friendship.

Arline maintained long-term friendships; among them was her fourth-grade girlfriend from Buhl. A group of the "girls" would gather a few times each year in various locations throughout eastern Idaho to hang out and share laughs and news updates.

Upon retirement, she devoted herself to Arco, volunteering in many capacities, including the Visitors' Kiosk each summer, organizing the Festival of the Trees, being an elections judge, and most recently coordinating the Arco Red Cross blood drives. She loved her town and always showed it off to her visitors from out of town with special pride.

Arline appreciated the natural world we live in, from her environmental concerns, love of animals and admiration at the beauty that surrounds us. Everywhere she went, she was loved. She is irreplaceable and is sorely missed.

There will be no funeral service; however, the family is planning a memorial in spring 2014.
