MURDER FARM IN OHIO YIELDS ITS THIRD BODY Going on a Long Time, Says Mental Patient
Coshocton, O.,
June 11 [Special] -- A third body was found today on the farm of Cletus Reese,
36, a former mental patient who said, "This has been going on a long
time." Shallow graves had yielded two other bodies yesterday and Saturday.
A volunteer group of 150 persons, most of them carrying shovels, spread over
the 200 acre farm about 20 miles northwest of here to search for more victims.
All the bodies found were those of men who had been beaten on the head. Police
said an Oak club about the size of a ball bat which was found at the farm had
been used to crush the skull of at least one of the slain men. One in Grave a
Year
The latest body was identified tentatively as that of Lester Melick, 58, a farmhand, of nearby Danville, who had been
missing since last Nov. 28. On Saturday authorities searching for Clyde Patton,
28, a school teacher and part time automobile salesman, had found his body in a
plowed furrow of a field on the farm where Reese lived alone. Admits One
Slaying Yesterday searchers found the body of a man, reduced nearly to a
skeleton, in a grave about 200 yards from Reese's home. That body, which Sherif Gilbert Kempf said had
been in its grave at least a year, remained unidentified.
Officers said Reese admitted beating Patton after an argument,
Patton, father of four, had gone to the Reese farm on June 2 to demonstrate a
new automobile. The husky, barrel chested farmer was taken into custody and
charged with first degree murder in Patton's death. Questioned about Melick's disappearance, Reese at first said he had killed
him, then denied it. The second body was found by Melick's son, Harry, in searching the Reese farm for his
father's body. He noticed an unusual contour in the land near the farmhouse
and, with the help of officers, unearthed the body. Inasmuch as no other person
has been reported missing in this area, officers said
the second body may be that of a transient who stopped at Reese's farm.
The body believed to be Melick's was
found when Guy Blankenship, 49, a Coshocton salesman, began digging
after he noticed dirt not the color of top soil on the ground about 10 feet
from an old barn near the Reese home. The body was only about a foot below the
surface. Reese was a mental patient for about five months in 1951 in the state
hospital at Cambridge.
