1974, Chicago Cook Co., IL, Death
Chicago Tribune (IL) - June 19, 1974
Two Chicago house painters drowned yesterday while fishing in a
forest preserve lagoon at the Edens Expressway
between Tower Road and Forest Way Drive just west of Winnetka. Sheriff's police
said that Leonard Blankenship, 28, of 916 W. Agatite
Av., and James Ayers, 28, of 4749 N. Dover Av., apparently were fishing in the
lagoon while relaxing between painting jobs when Blankenship
climbed onto a nearby dam and fell into the water which was about 7 feet deep.
Police said Ayers dived in to rescue his partner and both went under. Other
fishermen on the bank called police, and the bodies of both were recovered
about an hour later.

1973, Cicero, Cook Co., IL, Shooting Death
Chicago Tribune (IL) - August 13, 1973
Two Cicero families shared a blood relationship, shared a house in
the suburb, but they apparently could not share the affections of a 3-year-old
boy. A quarrel over the child ended in the fatal shooting of one family member
yesterday, according to Cicero police. Larry Hashbarger,
29, of 5409 W. 25th Pl., Cicero, died of gunshot wounds after a quarrel with
his brother in law, Taft
Blankenship, 31, of the same
address, over whether Hashbarger would let Blankenship visit with Hashbarger's stepson.
Blankenship turned
himself into police shortly after the shooting, and he was charged with murder,
according to Cicero detective Steven Bajovich. Until
a few weeks ago the families had been very friendly, Hashbarger's
wife, Betty told police. She named the boy, her son by an earlier marraige, Taft after Blankenship who is
married to her sister. But then the Blankenships took little Taft on a
vacation to Kentucky. When they returned on July 29 they did not immediately
tell the Hashbargers, and that set off a quarrel
which was settled only when police arrived, according to Bajovich.
There were no arrests in that incident, he said. Mrs. Hashbarger told police that the quarrel resumed yesterday
afternoon when Hashbarger told his brother in law he should
never speak with little Taft again. She said her husband was afraid he
was losing the loyalty of the child.
Later In the day as Hashbarger left the
home, Mrs. Hashbarger saw Blankenship at the font door aiming a pistol
at her husband, she told police. Then she heard a shot
and saw her husband begin running down the street with Blankenship in pursuit. Bajovich said the
chase ended in an alley off 54th Avenue south of 25th Place where another shot
was fired. Hashbarger was shot once in the back and
once in the chest. He was pronounced dead at MacNeal
Memorial Hospital in Berwyn. Before Hashbarger died, Bajovich said, he told police that Blankenship had shot him.
