1989, Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., NC, Obituary
The Charlotte Observer, (NC) - April 21, 1989
Jennings Cline is remembered by his brother Billie as an
''intensive person.'' ''He attacked everything he did. It was all or nothing,''
said Cline. Mr. Harold Jennings Cline, 57, of 3136 Imperial Dr., died April 19,
1989, at Charlotte Memorial Hospital.
Funeral is at 2 p.m. Saturday at Presbyterian Church of Lowell,
with the Rev. Steven Mowery officiating. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial
Park.
Mr. Cline, a retired service technician for Duke Power Co., was born
in Maiden. He was a member of Presbyterian Church of Lowell. He played
shortstop for Gastonia High School in state championships in 1947, '48 and '49.
As a youngster he played for several American Legion championship teams. Then
he signed with the Cincinnati Reds farm team in Concord in 1951, and played for
two years. ''Calcium deposits on his arm kept him from playing more,'' said his
wife, Kathleen Cline. Later, he shared his enthusiasm for baseball with
children. He was a Little League coach in Gastonia for several years.
''Jennings was a
competitor,'' said Larry Rhodes, a friend since 1951. ''That's the reason he
was able to overcome his health problems so long.'' Mr. Cline had suffered from
heart problems during the last years of his life. Health problems forced him to
retire from Duke Power in 1980, and he underwent bypass surgery the following
year. A second bypass was needed several years later, and he received a heart
transplant at Charlotte Memorial Hospital last September.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, are sons, Bill Cline of Denver,
Jeffery Cline of Jacksonville, Fla., Scott Cline; mother, Mrs. Devada
Blankenship Cline; brothers,
Leonard ''Whitey'' Cline of Tarpon Springs, Fla., Gaither Cline, Billie Cline.

http://www.newbernsj.com/news/jordan-27874-beirut-memorial.html,
October 24, 2002
Nineteen years ago, 241 local servicemen on a peacekeeping mission
in Beirut, Lebanon, died in a single day when a terrorist drove a truck loaded
with 12,000 pounds of explosives into the headquarters of 1st Battalion, 8th
Marine Regiment attached to the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit. Relatives and
friends of the victims were brought together during the tragic loss. From their
great sorrow, many have managed to put their lives back together in ways that
are forever intertwined.
Retired Maj. Bob Jordan is one of them. He talked about his
experience during the annual Beirut Memorial Service Wednesday in Jacksonville.
Jordan was a public affairs officer who not only had to tell the rest of the
world what happened to servicemen lost that day, but also dug through rubble
for over a week looking for survivors. Jordan
recalled John Chipura, whose name is not on the wall
at the Beirut Memorial near the entrance to Camp Johnson. "He and I dug
through the rubble to look for survivors," Jordan said. "He later
became a New York Police Department street cop who wanted to clean up the
neighborhood." Wanting to follow in the footsteps of his relatives, Chipura in 1998 became a firefighter with Engine Company
219 of the New York City Fire Department.
A week before dying in the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, Chipura called his old Marine buddy Jordan with some good
news. "He said, 'I found the girl of my dreams and maybe you can meet my
fiancé at the (Beirut) memorial this year'," Jordan said. Jordan himself
recently married Eva, the 1983 widow of one of his friends, Sgt. Manuel Cox,
whose name is on the wall.
Debby Horner, who lost her first husband, Sgt. Richard L. Blankenship, in Beirut on Oct. 23, 1983, inspired a
song by her current husband, Eric Horner, a lead guitarist and songwriter for
country music artist Lee Greenwood. Last year, Horner watched as his wife
relived the tragedy through images of the World Trade Center on television and
wrote the song "We Will Stand," as encouragement to survive the
ordeal. Wednesday, Horner included this rendition with two others about love
and faithful commitment to freedom. During the ceremony, tears flowed down the
cheeks of many combat-hardened veterans who shared this common bond.
Sometimes they fidgeted uncomfortably, trying unsuccessfully to
keep their emotions in check, often breaking into sobs as they shared knowing
glances and warm hugs of comradeship. "We will always be faithful to those
who fell nearly 20 years ago today," said Lt. Gen. Emil "Buck" Bedard, deputy commandant for plans, policies and
operations at Marine Corps Headquarters.
