Omaha World-Herald: Web Edition Articles (NE) - May 29, 2019
Edna Pearl Fisher, an amazing woman, passed away on May 14, 2019 in
Omaha, NE. On July 24, 1921, Edna was born to Pearl and Edward Lucke in Gordon,
NE.
Edna was the sixth of seven children. She survived the dust bowl,
the Depression, WW II, and the Hemingford flood of 2015. She was the last
living member of the Hemingford High School class of 1939. Edna's first job, as
a little girl, was walking cows in the ditch, for 25 cents a day. Her last job
was owner-operator of a successful million-dollar potato farm and warehouse operation.
In between those years she worked as a baker, a bookkeeper, and a school
secretary; she also operated a motel and a restaurant.
With a note of blessing from her parents, she married Garland
Fisher in 1939 at the home of the Justice of the Peace. This union lasted 47
years until Garland passed away in 1986. They had three beautiful daughters:
Patsy Lou (Swanson) of Hemingford, Charlotte Lucille (Moravek) of Alliance, and
Garlea Rae (Andreasen) of Omaha, NE. While raising her children, she was active
in the Hemingford United Methodist Church, Box Butte County Fair committees and
various committees at Fountain of the Sun. Edna and Garland enjoyed camping,
fishing, boating, traveling and entertaining their family and many friends.
They divided their time between residences in Hemingford, NE; Belmont, NE; Lake
McConaughy, NE; and Mesa, AZ.
Edna was always a very active and athletic person. She would often
describe her childhood self as a tomboy. At the age of 63, she was doing
cartwheels in her living room with her grandchildren. Edna's hobbies included
baking, gardening, painting, bowling, walking, reading and golfing. It was
while she was on a golf course in Arizona that she met Mervin Dahl of Prince
Albert, Sak, Canada. They married in 1995 and spent 15 wonderful years dancing
and golfing in Arizona, until Mervin's death in 2010. Edna moved to Omaha, NE,
in 2014 and spent her remaining years surrounded by the family that loved her.
She went by many names: Ande, wife, mom, grandma and Gigi. We will miss her
fried chicken and mashed potatoes, her pickled beets and peppers from the
garden, her smile, her giggle and her sense of humor. She was OUR strong,
independent, and Amazing Woman.
Preceded in death by her parents and six siblings; her husbands:
Garland Fisher and Mervin Dahl; and her grandson, Jeffrey Swanson.
She is survived by her three daughters, Patsy (Jack) Swanson of
Hemingford, Charlotte (Jim) Moravek of Alliance, and Garlea (Dana) Andreasen of
Omaha; her eight grandchildren:
Jac-Lynn (Daniel) Stefka of Alliance; Jason (Jennifer) Swanson of Hemingford;
Jill (Jon) Panzer of Omaha; Jaimi Ann (Dan) Hogan of Lafayette, CO; Jonathan
(Anh) Moravek of Omaha; David
(Sandee) Blankenship of
Alliance; Johnny Blankenship of Lincoln; and Natalie (Justin) Gomez of
Omaha. Edna has 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Marion “Everett” Price, age 92, joined his beloved wife, Loretta,
to be with the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 7, 2016. Everett, as his
family called him, was born February 7, 1924 in Oakley, Kansas to Effie Mae
(Butz) and Marion Everett Price Sr.
He married Loretta Rosa Gunter June 22, 1947. After an opportunity
with The Union Pacific Railroad, the young couple settled in North Platte with
their young son and soon after a daughter, completing their happy family.
Everett loved the railroad and devoted his entire career till his retirement.
Everett was also active right from the beginning, carrying on his Boy Scout
years by serving with the council. In fact, he achieved the rare honor of being
awarded the “Silver Beaver” and the “George Meany Award” which culminated years
of distinguished service to youth.
Not allowing that to be his only accomplishment, he was in the
Army, active and mostly reservist for 27 years and there too, retired. Another
rare feat. Everett was a life-long kid, forever playing with trains (the big
kind), training as a citizen soldier and being a perpetual Boy Scout. If that
was not enough, Everett’s generosity led him to many other organizations, like
the Rotary Club, Odd Fellows, Retired Senior Volunteer Program “RSVP” and a
lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, just to name a few. A
truer, more honest man would be hard to find and here in North Platte we are
privileged to have known such a remarkable soul.
He was preceded in death by his lifetime partner and wife Loretta;
his parents; and a brother.
Everett is survived by his children Wayne (Michele) Price of
Palmer, Alaska and Janice (Darrell) Hirsch of Arvada, Colorado; 5 grandchildren Julie (Jason) Blankenship, Angela
Tucker, Marty (Jennifer) Price, Jeremy (Erin) Hirsch, Jaime (Michael) Greene;

Scottsbluff
+2019, Scottsbluff, Scottsbluff Co., NE, Memorial
Star-Herald (Scottsbluff, NE) - November 10, 2019
Nancy Blankenship
knew very little about her father. She was less than 3 years old and had only
spent about eight months with him before he was killed in action in France,
just prior to the end of World War II in Europe.
An aspiring artist, Marvin Blankenship
had been accepted to study at the Baltimore School of Art before he was called
up by Uncle Sam in 1943. During his time in the US Army, Marvin was diligent
about sending letters, sketches and trinkets to his wife Wilma back in
Scottsbluff. It was through those mementos, along with letters from the War
Department, that Nancy would later learn about her father.
Born in Scottsbluff, Marvin spent most of his youth in the
Torrington and Lyman area. After graduation, he returned to Scottsbluff to work
at Cox Lumber. He was 20 years old when he was drafted in 1943. By that time,
he had a fiancée, Wilma Busacker.
Marvin was sent to Camp Blanding, Florida for basic training. Wilma
joined him there in June of 1943, where they were married in one of the many
chapels on the base. Before Marvin was transferred to Camp Robinson in Little
Rock, Arkansas, Wilma and new daughter Nancy were able to travel back to
Florida to spend some time with him.
Shipped to Europe from New York, Marvin had time to send many
letters home, along with sketches of the countryside their ship passed on the
way to Italy. Mount Etna, an eruption of Mount Vesuvius, an Italian monastery,
and later his new home (a tent) became subjects for his art. Landing at Anzio
Beachhead in Italy, the 36th Infantry Division, including Staff Sergeant Marvin Blankenship,
marched north through Italy and into France, engaging in several battles
against Nazi forces along the way. The war ended for Marvin on March 13, 1945,
at the Battle of Haguenau, near Strasbourg, France, near the border with
Germany. Originally listed as missing, Marvin was reported dead 12 days later.
"Your husband was performing his duties as squad leader during
an attack on an enemy position, when he was fatally hit," said a letter
from a War Department chaplain to Wilma in Scottsbluff. "Heavy tank fire
delayed the advance of the squad, and he was struck by an enemy shell
fragment." During his service, Marvin was awarded two Purple Hearts and two Silver
Stars.
The fallen were originally buried in France, but in 1946, family
members were given the option to have the war dead transferred home at the
Army's expense. Arrangements weren't completed until 1949, but Marvin is now
buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering.
"Two of my aunts were very good about sharing things about
what was going on and what they saw during the war," Nancy said. "My
mother had all of the letters, sketches and other mementos saved in the pump
room in the basement." Nancy said her mother had kept the material hidden
for more than 60 years because she remarried about a year later. "My
stepfather was a jealous man and my mother couldn't talk about it," she
said. "He wouldn't let me see my dad's parents who lived here at the time.
As an adult, I just think of how cruel that was."
Nancy and her husband, Doug Berry, are back in Scottsbluff after
living in several states. Doug was with the Ford Motor Company, while Nancy was
a teacher, school administrator and a school district student achievement specialist.
Their two sons, who both live in Connecticut, have careers in the military and
in law enforcement.
The couple was living in California when Wilma sold the house and
moved into an assisted living facility. So Nancy came into possession of her
father's effects. She quickly had copies and later digital scans made until she
figured out how to share them with her two sons and six grandchildren.
Those pictures, as well as information from extensive research,
went into Nancy's book on her father's life, "Green Shutters and a White
Picket Fence." Her need to tell his story and leave a legacy for future
generations didn't end there. In 2018, Nancy had the opportunity, along with
her stepsister, to follow the path taken by her father's division during World
War II, from the shores of Africa, into the Mediterranean, to Anzio Beachhead
in Italy and north to Rome
"My goal was to get as many photographs as I could of what he
had sketched," Nancy said. "I figured out he had the most time to
sketch just after they arrived in Italy and before they headed north into
battle. Once they got through Rome, my mother got fewer letters and no new
sketches."
Nancy is planning another trip in 2020. This one will take her
along the northern route from New York through the Straits of Gibraltar and on
to France and Spain, again ending up in Rome. Through all the research and the
trip to Europe, Nancy said she now has a better understanding of her father and
his place in a time of war "I can better accept my loss, but will always
mourn the Dad who didn't come home to buy that 'five room house with green
shutters and a white picket fence' that he had promised my mother."
Along the way, she's also learned the importance for everyone to
tell their story and leave a legacy that will be carried on by future
generations. "My father, Marvin Blankenship, was one of many who gave
their life for our country," Nancy said. "When the opportunity
arises, please, always thank those who came home and always remember those who
didn't." jpurvis@starherald.com

Laura Blankenship, 74;
A note from Teddy
Blankenship:
I lost my partner Laura, Jan. 5 at Nye Legacy, Fremont, [Dodge Co., NE]. Laura Jane Melia was born in Baltimore,
Md., Dec. 20, 1943 to Leo Patrick Melia and Alice Isabelle Wimsett. Leo immigrated from
Ireland, one of three brothers. One brother, Adrian, was killed during the
Irish Easter Rebellion of 1916. Laura loved her Irish roots and always ate
European style as her father did. Marched in all the Baltimore and Omaha St.
Paddy's Day parades. Laura graduated from Bon Secours School of Nursing as an
RN and worked in the pulmonary unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital. She met me in
Baltimore while I was attending my union school.
Laura and I were married in the old Baptist Church in Tekemah, May
5, 1973. Our first home was an apartment above Florence Rasmussen's home. Laura
made lifelong friends in Burt County. We purchased 80 acres with an old
farmhouse west of Tekemah on Highway 32. We made our home there and she enjoyed
the country life. Hoeing beans and taking care of her animals with the help of
her friends at the Red Barn and raising her special pets, King the pony, Homer
the calf, Lady Jane the wolf and Smoki the husky. Laura was the one who ran the
home and took care of business while I was away. I could have never asked for a
better partner. She love nature and people. She said “there is good in everyone
if you look heard enough.” That was Laura.
Laura and I moved to north of Arlington, to a home on 17 acres.
Lots of nature and she loved it. Laura made lifelong friends there as well.
Laura suffered a massive stroke on Oct. 22, 2017. Laura fought a hard battle
with the neurosurgery and ICU at UNMC, the rehab at Madonna Lincoln and rehab
at Nye Legacy Fremont. Laura suffered another bad stroke Dec. 31, 2017 and
passed away Jan. 5, 2018 at Nye Legacy. I will always be thankful for those two
plus months I got to spend with my partner, together struggling to make her
life full.
Laura donated her body to the Anatomical Board of Nebraska for the
students at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Creighton University
Medical Center. No surprise, that was Laura.
