2012, Atlantic City, Atlantic Co., NJ, Obituary

The Press of Atlantic City, (NJ) - August 2, 2012

Donna L. Homefield, 1950-2012 - Born in Pennsylvania by Richard and Ann T. Dysart. She had five children.

She was predeceased by two children, Jamie R. Boyce, and Jeremy A Boyce.

She is survived by son Kenneth Boyce (44), "You were everything to me, miss and love you always and forever;" daughter Leigh Anna Homefield (34), "You are always with me, I Love You", and son Bernard J. "Dear grandma I love you a lot, I miss you a lot".

Donna lived an Extraordinary life of caring as a home health aide for holy redeemer home care, creating lasting relationships with the ones she cared for, often bringing work home with her. She works tirelessly, allowing nothing to stop her. You Are Loved and Missed Forever!! Nobody knew her struggles; she chose to rely on God. When her kids took her to the limits, "she held on", never abandoning her love and staying true to the words God spoke to her, which she lived in her actions every day, humbly denying herself for the precious needs of others. I asked her.. If you had one wish what would it be?? She looked at me and said, "only to be loved by my children". I told her you are loved mom.

2015, Tenafly, Bergen Co., NJ, Obituary

The Record, (Hackensack, NJ) and Herald News (West Paterson, NJ) Date: February 15, 2015

Ellen E. (nee Effenberger) Rochford; Ellen's incredible life came to a close on February 12, 2015.

Her 89 years were marked by giving back to others, raising a loving family, enjoying different cultures and success in business. She charted her own, unique course that impacted the lives of countless individuals. Ellen would often retort "fake it 'till you make it" and boy, did she make it.

The daughter of immigrant parents, Hugo and Emilie Effenberger, Ellen grew up with loving siblings: Ruth, Kenneth, Erna and Richard. She was a Wisconsin girl by birth, but became a New Yorker by heart after moving to the City in 1946. The restaurants, the culture, the people all made the City that never sleeps Ellen's adopted home. Ellen had a love of people so she never knew a stranger. Whether on the subway in New York, the ferry to Nantucket, MA or at a restaurant in Milan, Italy, Ellen became quick friends of anyone who encountered her kindness and warm spirit.

Ellen was not only a hard worker, but a savvy businesswoman. One of her first experiences in enterprise was as a child selling chocolate bars on the dock in Racine, WI for a nickel. After working for the State Department during WWII, Ellen was one of the first employees at the United Nations in 1948 in Lake Success, NY. Her business acumen would lead her across the world in her 17 years as Director of Employee Communications for Pfizer Inc. She loved the Pfizer family and her outreach and friendship with hundreds of employees across the globe strengthened that family spirit. As people her age were retiring, Ellen was just getting started taking over the family packaging and gift wrap company, Kraft Packaging, as well as still serving as editor for the Pfizer retiree newsletter, the Plus.

She was extremely devoted to her community. Ellen served as President of the Board of Directors of the Tenafly, New Jersey Library for 24 years earning the town proclamation of "Ellen Rochford Day" on her 80th birthday, the Valued Citizen award of 2012 and a permanent marker celebrating her as a 'leading force.' And Ellen loved giving back; she never turned down a charity or friend in need. Her annual Christmas party was beloved by all her friends and embodied the holiday spirit of giving back.

Ellen was a fabulous chef. She made gourmet family meals, sold her cookies at leading department stores, and held cooking classes in her home kitchen. Ellen was blessed by incredible culinary instincts. Ingredients were measured in pinches. Recipes stored by memory. International cooking trips too many to count. Salt was used liberally and Christmas cookies baked in stacks.

Of all of her passion's, Ellen's family was what she held most dear. A devoted wife to William (Bill) Rochford for 38 years, Ellen had two daughters, Christine Vineis (Paul) and Beth Blankenship (John) who made her extremely proud and blessed her with four grandchildren Drew and Reid Vineis, Meredith and Peter Blankenship whom she adored.

She was never one to be intimidated by the status quo. Ellen was a female executive in a male dominated corporate America, a senior citizen taking classes at Columbia University, a child of the Great Depression whose success provided comfort and charity for many. Ellen Rochford's life was vibrant, accomplished, and caring, and most notably it was done her way.

A memorial service will be held later in the year in Tenafly, NJ.

Camden

2015, Camden, Camden Co., NJ, Obituary

The Philadelphia Tribune, (PA) Date: June 5, 2015

The Rev. Britt A. Starghill was regarded as a champion for Camden, NJ. He was the senior pastor of Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church in Camden. He died on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 of a heart attack. He was 46.

Starghill is being remembered as a visionary leader for the 21st century who practiced transformational ministry. He was known as a staunch advocate for social justice issues, especially education. Starghill played a pivotal role in helping children attend college. "Dr. Starghill passionately believed that education was the great liberator for children living in impoverished communities," said Camden Mayor Dana Redd. "To this end, he ensured that children of our community and region had an opportunity to attend colleges across the State of New Jersey, as well as our nation."

Starghill galvanized the church and community to believe in the vision of the Nehemiah Project, a 501©(3) community development corporation he created to address the blight that had consumed Camden's gateway neighborhood. The Nehemiah Project is a vision that comes from believing that Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church is a template church for equipping and liberating ministries of and for the people throughout the world. Starghill's vision is to increase ministries that advance spiritual redemption and socio-economic salvation. "[Rev. Starghill] encouraged his members and the surrounding neighborhood to give back and take an active part in the city's revitalization efforts," said Redd.

Since its inception, the Nehemiah Project served as a catalyst for the revitalization of this Camden community. Before his passing, Starghill was leading Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church's strategic plan, a program to ensure the church would remain relevant, and discipleship continued to grow as the demographics of the community changed over the next five to ten years.

Starghill's impact was also felt outside the pews of Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church. Assemblyman Gilbert "Whip" Wilson said Starghill adopted Whittier School and helped send Camden High School's basketball team to Puerto Rico twice. Starghill regularly hosted different high school events, including the baccalaureate ceremony.

A native of Detroit, Starghill is a fourth generation pastor, who began preaching in 1983 at the age of 13. He served as the assistant pastor and youth minister at the historic First Baptist Church in Loretto, Va. from 1987 to 1990. He went on to serve as the assistant minister at Pilgrim Journey Baptist Church in Richmond, Va., while teaching history and geography in the Richmond School System. Starghill worked as the congressional aide to Rep. Barbara Rose Collins (D-Michigan) while serving as an associate minister at Peace Baptist Church in Washington, DC. Over the next five years, Starghill gained experience serving various denominations, including the United Methodist, Presbyterian, Episcopal and Baptist churches.

Prior to moving to Camden to become pastor-elect of Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church, Starghill served as co-pastor of Samaritan Baptist Church in Detroit. He was installed as KABC's 14th pastor on April 17, 1997. "We recognize Dr. Starghill meant a lot to KABC and this is tremendous loss for our church family; the city of Camden and beyond," his family said in a written statement. "However, to us Britt was a devoted husband who adored his children. He was also revered by his parents, who are still living in Detroit and he will be sorely missed by his sisters, brothers and a host of other relatives, beloved colleagues in ministry and very dear friends."

Starghill received his bachelor's degree in economics and religion from Virginia Union University, a master of divinity from United Theological Seminary and a doctorate in ministry from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School.

He is survived by: his wife, Catherine Lynn Fruge' of Detroit; children, Britt Andrew and Brie Alexandra; parents the Rev. and Mrs. (Betty) Robert Starghill Sr. of Detroit; sisters, Chantay Blankenship of Detroit; Janet Smith (Mark) of Indianapolis, Ind.; Renee Starghill of Shreveport, La.; Karen Boozer of Statesboro, Ga.; Dinah Barnett (Charles) of Detroit; April Starghill of Detroit; and Robert Starghill, Jr. (Rhonda) of Cincinnati, Ohio

A public viewing will be June 12 from noon to 8 p.m. at Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church, 831 Kaighn Avenue in Camden, NJ. Services will be held June 13 at 11 a.m. at Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church.

A memorial service is being planned at the Samaritan Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit where Starghill's father is the pastor.

2015, Camden, Camden Co., NJ, Obituary

Philadelphia Daily News (PA) Date: June 24, 2015

Is Camden a hopeless case? Britt Starghill didn't think so. As pastor of Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church, Britt wasn't only concerned with the souls of his parishioners, but also with the soul of the impoverished city around him. He was founder of the Nehemiah Project, a community development corporation devoted to fighting the blight afflicting the Gateway section of the city.

He adopted the Whittier School, with the aim of seeing to it that its students got the best education to ensure their success in the world beyond the classroom. He helped to send Camden High School's basketball team to Puerto Rico twice.

But basically, the Rev. Britt Armando Starghill was an old-fashioned preacher who thrilled his parishioners with his spirited delivery of the Christian message, accompanied by the music of the pipe organ and Hammond organ he purchased, and, of course, the sweet-sounding choirs. He died June 2 of a heart attack at the age of 46.

"Dr. Starghill passionately believed that education was the great liberator for children living in impoverished communities," Camden Mayor Dana Redd said in a statement. "To this end, he ensured that children of our community and region had an opportunity to attend colleges across the state of New Jersey, as well as our nation." She said Britt "encouraged his members and the surrounding community to give back and take an active part in the city's revitalization efforts."

Britt Starghill came to the historic Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church, founded in 1856, in 1997 from his native Detroit, where he was co-pastor of the Samaritan Baptist Church with his father, the Rev. Robert Starghill Sr. When he arrived, he took a look around and realized that the church and the community around it needed some serious work. He took on the job. That's what the Nehemiah Project was for.

New Jersey Assemblyman Gilbert Wilson said in a statement, "Though Pastor Starghill had an interest in all his families, he took special interest in black and Latino males. His focus was on community development, especially through the Nehemiah Project."

"The Nehemiah Project is a vision that comes from believing that Kaighn Avenue Baptist Church is a template church for equipping and liberating ministries of and for the people throughout the world," the church said in a statement. Before his death, the church said, Starghill was "leading the church's strategic plan, a three-to-five-year program to ensure the church would remain relevant, and discipleship continue to grow as the demographics of the community change over the next five to 10 years." "We recognize that this is a tremendous loss for our church family, the city of Camden, and beyond," his family said in a statement.

"However, to us Britt was a devoted husband who adored his children. He was revered by his parents, who are still living in Detroit, and he will be sorely missed by his sisters, brothers, and a host of other relatives, beloved colleagues in ministry, and very dear friends."

Britt grew up in Detroit and earned his bachelor's degrees in economics and religion from Virginia Union University in Richmond, a master of divinity from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and a doctorate in ministry from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Rochester, N.Y.

His wife, the former Catherine Lynn Fruge', is an attorney and executive director of the Workforce Operations & Business Services at the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development. They married in 1999.

Besides his wife and parents, the Rev. Robert Starghill Sr. and Betty Starghill, he is survived by a son, Britt; a daughter, Brie; a brother, Robert Starghill Jr.; and six sisters, Chantay Blankenship, Janet Smith, Renee Starghill, Karen Boozer, Dinah Barnett and April Starghill.

Services: Were June 13.

2016, Cherry Hill, Camden Co., NJ, Obituary

Published in Courier-Post on Dec. 4, 2016

Betty Rothman passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 13, 2016, just five-weeks shy of her 94th birthday. She died at her home in Cherry Hill, the home she had cherished for 60 years. Betty was born and raised in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. During World War II she went into hiding posing as a maid.

She endured near-starvation during the last winter of the war, often going on "hunger trips" to the north of Holland, riding her bicycle for 8 hours during the dead of night. Even though her parents and oldest brother died in concentration camps, Betty survived due to the kindness of strangers including several German soldiers. Remarkably, and impressively, she maintained a positive outlook on life. In 2008 Betty recounted her war memories in a documentary made by her grandchildren. The presentation may be viewed at: https://ryan-ishii.wistia.com/medias/lxrv05kdk5

A decade after moving to America, Betty became a volunteer for the Animal Welfare Association of southern New Jersey in the 1960's. There she discovered her life's passion: working with animals. She and her late husband, Dr. Marvin Rothman, worked together for 47 years at the Rothman Animal Hospital which he founded in Collingswood, NJ. Betty served primarily as office manager, and later as an accountant, working until she was 90. The animal hospital continues to be of service to the community today.

For many years, Betty and Marvin's home became a haven for any animal or teenager who was lost and in need of being nurtured. It's been said that it was harder to adopt a pet from Betty Rothman than it was to adopt a child. Her love of animals was legendary and she will be remembered for continuously helping people and pets in need. When asked how she would like to be remembered she replied playfully, "What could you say about me that wasn't fantastic!"

Betty leaves an indelible imprint on those she knew. Her family and friends will miss her witty poems, her quirky sense of humor, her blunt style of speaking, her elegant dinner parties & neighborhood gatherings, and the gift she gave us all by setting an example that anything is possible.

Betty firmly believed that "The two most important ingredients in anyone's life are health and freedom"; if you have these two all-important components, you are able to create your own destiny. In later years she expanded her perspective stating that, "The most important thing in life is to be surrounded by people you love and who love you." Betty lived a life filled with courage, passion, honor, honesty, and humor. She will be forever remembered as a hero who remained upbeat against seemingly insurmountable odds.

Betty is survived by her two daughters, Marsha Andreola of North Carolina and Saskia (Andreola) Ishii of Honolulu, Hawaii; her three grandchildren, Ryan Ishii, Jenna Ishii, and her twin-sister, Allison (Ishii) Blankenship, who live in Honolulu; and her two nieces, and great-niece, Tamarah Benima, Maureen Benima, and Joya Benima, who live in Amsterdam. Other family members beloved by Betty are her son-in-law, Dr. Clyde Ishii, and her grandson-in-law, Todd Blankenship, both of Honolulu.

A private celebration to honor Betty's life will be held in late December.
