2014, Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., NM, Obituary

Albuquerque Journal (NM) December 14, 2014

Paul M. Coddington, 64, died at home on November 24 after a long illness.

He was preceded in death by his father Stanley and his mother Juliette, and in the Albuquerque area he is survived by first cousin Neil Coddington (wife Betty Jo) and many other cousins in the large Clarence Blankenship family.

He also leaves behind long-time friends in various parts of the country. A 1968 graduate of Highland High School in Albuquerque, Paul studied broadcast journalism at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, and during the early '70s he worked at radio stations in El Paso and Tucson. When times were tough, he took whatever kind of work he could find. In the late '70s, he worked for Capital Records in Dallas. Later, Paul got into the fields of value engineering and computer support before returning to Albuquerque in 1998 to care for his mother. Paul will be remembered as a witty, loyal, and generous friend and an appreciative neighbor who was always up for a lively discussion about popular music, education, politics, or just about anything else he knew something about. An inveterate "news junkie," he had strong and informed opinions. For better or worse, Paul lived life his own way; but there is reason to hope that when presented with the ultimate choice, he took the hand Jesus offered.

A memorial service is being planned for a suitable time well after the Christmas holidays.

+2015, Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., NM, Obituary

https://www.abqjournal.com/527585/brother-follows-brother-in-death.html

Last Sunday, during an all-night drinking session with his brother, 31-year-old Christopher Jaramillo started talking about how horrible his life had become. He grabbed a gun and shot himself in the head. His brother, Cory Blankenship, picked up the phone, dialed 911, and let police know that Jaramillo had killed himself. He told them he was going to do the same thing. And he did.

Jaramillo was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he later died. Blankenship was pronounced dead at the scene. It was his 19th birthday.

A Bernalillo County Sheriff’s detective detailed what investigators learned about the Jan. 11 shootings in a search warrant filed in 2nd Judicial District Court.

A woman told police that she was drinking with the brothers inside Blankenship’s apartment at the Retreat at Candelaria complex on Jane Place NE, according to the warrant. She said two children, ages 2 and 4, were asleep when the shootings took place.

When medical workers moved Jaramillo’s body at the scene, they found a gun beneath him. Police found another firearm on a table in the apartment, the detective wrote in the search warrant. Police have ruled the deaths suicides.

Chelsea Engel, who lives in the apartment beneath Blankenship, said a loud noise woke her up around 2:45 a.m. Sunday. “I woke up, and immediately got up to call the cops, and as I was on the phone, I heard a lot of yelling from a guy,” she said. “While I was on the phone, the yelling stopped and I didn’t really hear anything else. But as soon as I got off the phone I heard a woman start screaming hysterically.”

Three days later, when Dezirae Price heard that Jaramillo – the father of her child – had killed himself, she started screaming too. “I cried the hardest I have ever cried in my life,” she said. “I don’t want to believe he committed suicide. I’m not accepting that in my heart.” Price, who now lives in Nevada, said she hadn’t talked to Jaramillo that week, but when she woke up Sunday morning, she saw that she missed several calls from Blankenship’s phone overnight. She called back that day but couldn’t reach either brother. Price said Jaramillo had many close friends. “Everybody loved him. He called everybody brother or sister,” she said.

Price said she met Jaramillo in Los Lunas in October 2012 and their relationship moved at lightning speed. They moved to Albuquerque in January, and shortly afterward Price discovered she was pregnant. Their family became Jaramillo’s whole world, she said. Price lost her job, and in October she moved to Nevada to be with her mother, taking their then 1-year-old son with her. “Chris would ask if he could come and visit his son,” Price said. And she said she wanted him to. “I know he wanted to move up here,” she said. “He said things weren’t working out for him job-wise, and he wanted to start over.”

Jaramillo never got a job. And he never made it out to see her.

An obituary in Thursday’s Journal said both Jaramillo and Blankenship had two children each. It said both men were “loved beyond belief by their grandparents, several aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as many other friends and relatives.”

In an interview Friday, Santino Segura, the brothers’ cousin, said Blankenship told him he was going to pick him up Saturday evening, but he never arrived. The next morning, Segura learned about the shootings. “Cory was going through a hard time,” Segura said, but he didn’t show any warning signs. “Chris on the other hand (what I saw from Facebook) is he was depressed and angry.” Even with more than a decade age gap between the brothers, Blankenship and Jaramillo were always very close, he said. “Cory looked up to Chris so much,” Segura said. “Just the look my cousin would give him, even when Chris would just speak, he loved him.”

Price said she knew Jaramillo had been depressed but never imagined that either brother would commit suicide. “I guess to see your older brother laying there – shot – that’s terrifying. That’s devastating. That’s everything in the book awful,” she said. “Maybe he didn’t know what to do, maybe he was just scared and didn’t know what to do.”

2016, Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., NM, Obituary

Albuquerque Journal (NM) - May 15, 2016

Michael Patrick Wade "Mike" March 1931" May 2016.

At the young age of 17, Michael Patrick Wade along with his cousin Bill Wade departed the west coast of Ireland for a new life in the United States. It was there in New York City that he met Mary Ellen Cunniffe "Maureen" at an Irish American dancehall. Maureen was committed to an "arranged" relationship back in her hometown in Ireland so Mike followed her back home insisting she "choose " him or me." They arranged to meet up on an eastbound train to Dublin where they eloped and married.

They returned to NYC and within weeks Mike was off to Airborne and Infantry School in Ft. Benning, Georgia while Maureen made a home and found employment in NYC. Mike served in the Korean War where he made 24 jumps. He then had two tours of duty in Vietnam and in 1967 was awarded the Bronze Star for outstanding meritorious service against hostile forces while serving with the 6thBattalion, 56th Artillery Group. In 1971 he was again awarded the Bronze Star in connection with military operations against hostile forces in the Republic of Vietnam.

Mike went on to receive many other awards before retiring in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1973. His service to his country is the achievement he is most proud of and after retiring from the Army, he obtained undergraduate and graduate degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, and Psychology.

Mike was born in Balla, County Mayo Ireland in 1931. He was married to his sweetheart Maureen for 62 years. They have three children Caroline, Stephen and Thomas Moore - all successful business owners.

They lost Thomas in 2005 but through their faith, friends and extended family they moved through their grief keeping Thomas's memory alive. Their grandchildren Sarah, Michael, Katie and RiLeigh along with great grand-children Natalie and Ryan were his pride and joy.

Mike was a brilliant man who in his youth played the bagpipes and fife; he loved to read, debate politics and philosophy, play a little a golf, watch old movies, listen to music and drink Irish tea. He was an accomplished NYC handball champion and well known in the ABQ racquetball scene. But what Mike did best was being a proud American striking a balance between Ireland, the country he loved and left and America, the country he fought for. Because of him, his children truly appreciate their Irish heritage while recognizing the risk and sacrifices he made to build a home and family in the United States.

Mike, our beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather passed away peacefully on May 13, 2016 at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen Wade; daughter Caroline Wade Blankenship and husband Dale; son Stephen Wade and wife Kris, daughter-in-law Patti Wade and his grandchildren and great- grandchildren.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Mary Wade, his sisters Angela and Anne; brother Jack, and son Thomas.

2019, Albuquerque, Bernalillo Co., NM, Obituary

Albuquerque Journal (NM) - October 10, 2019

Mary Ellen "Maureen" Wade She was a young woman when she arrived in New York City after departing the western shores of Ireland. It was then, Mary Ellen Cunniffe (Maureen) would begin her new life, and it was at an Irish American dancehall where she met Michael Padraig (Patrick) Wade who was "trying to be all that" when he asked her for a dance. As life would have it back in the day, Maureen was committed to an "arranged" relationship in her hometown in Ireland, but Mike followed her back home persuading Maureen to meet him on an eastbound train to Dublin where they then eloped and married. They returned to NYC in time for Mike to leave for Army Infantry School and ultimately the Korean War.

Maureen, in the meantime, was busy finding employment and setting up housekeeping. When Mike returned from Korea, Maureen had found, fully furnished, and made a home for them in Manhattan, NYC.

Maureen was born in Dunmore, County Galway, Ireland in 1925.

Maureen was married to the love of her life for 62 years when Mike passed away in May 2016. They had three children, Caroline, Stephen, and Thomas. They lost Thomas in 2005, but through their faith, friends, and family, they kept Thomas's memory alive. Her grandchildren, along with great grandchildren, were everything to her. Maureen traveled wherever Mike's Army career took them from New York to Arizona, to Germany twice and back before they ultimately settled in Albuquerque, NM.

Maureen maintained her faith and loyalty, holding the family together, while Mike spent three years at war for this country. She was feisty and forthcoming, always coming from a place of love and best interests, and was extraordinary in her interactions with others, exuding a motherly presence to anyone she would meet. Her life was defined by her faith, love, loyalty, honesty and trust. Maureen found her calling working with children with intellectual and physical disabilities. Her selflessness, divine love, and strength of affection enabled her to connect to a universal spirit, providing her with a powerful intuition about her gifted children and seeing potential where others did not. She developed the trust of not only those she cared for but the families who entrusted her with their precious children. Maureen worked for Albuquerque Public Schools for 23 years, culminating with her work at Mark Twain Elementary School.

Maureen volunteered with the American Red Cross, Roadrunner Food Bank, Presbyterian Daffodil Days, was a Eucharistic Minister at Lovelace Medical Center and at Sangre de Cristo Church, she taught Catechism, worked with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and volunteered in the office. She was a vibrant presence at the Brother Mathias Annual St. Patrick's Day Dinners. Maureen, beloved wife and high-spirited mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully with poise and gratefulness at the young age of 94.

Maureen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Cunniffe; her brothers, Timothy, Anthony and Stephen, and sister, Bren, and son, Thomas.

Maureen is survived by her daughter, Caroline Wade Blankenship, and husband, Dale; son, Stephen Wade, and wife, Kris; daughter-in-law, Patti Wade; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews; including her brother, Anthony's children, Anne, Mary, Monica, Barbara, Philomena and Anthony.

2016, Las Cruces, Doña Ana Co., NM, Obituary

Published in Las Cruces Sun-News on Mar. 11, 2016

On the morning of Thursday, March 3, 2016, Heavenly Father opened His arms and welcomed Kirk Hippensteel into His grace, after a courageous battle with malignant metastatic melanoma. He was 70 years old. Kirk was born on December 27, 1945, in Huntington, Indiana. He was the youngest of five children born to Dale and Thelma Hippensteel.

Kirk was raised on a dairy farm where he assisted the family business by tending to the livestock and was a member of the 4H club. Kirk loved to spend time with his grandfather. By the age of five, his beloved grandfather taught him all of the US Presidents in chronological order. He also loved his dog, Tawney, who enjoyed catching bumble bees. He was an active athlete throughout his life involved in basketball, baseball and tennis.

Kirk was the valedictorian of his graduating high school class and was immediately accepted into Manchester College where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1967. He was then accepted into the medical program at Indiana University where he was awarded his Doctor of Medicine in 1971.

Kirk enlisted into the Navy where he served as a Force Medical Officer on the Admiral staff in the Middle East from 1972-1973. He served as a member of staff in Jacksonville, Florida at the Naval Medical Center from 1973-1974. He completed his residency in the Internal Medicine Department at the Naval Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1976 where he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. Kirk completed his fellowship within the Pulmonary Medicine Department at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland where he was Assistant Head of the Pulmonary Disease Division, and he was certified by the Subspecialty Board of Pulmonary Disease in 1978. Kirk ended his Naval career as the Assistant Head of the Pulmonary Disease Division at the National Medical Center in 1979. During this time he was honored to have been invited and attend the inauguration of former President Jimmy Carter.

In 1980, Kirk joined two of his fellow Naval colleagues and dear friends, Dr. Rick Castle and Dr. Bruce Stewart, as a partner in their practice, Pulmonary Medicine Associates in Roanoke, Virginia. During his time at the medical practice, he also partnered with the Pulmonary Occupational and Research Consultants as a Sub Investigator for multiple Phase III clinical study trials. He also served as a defendant and plaintiff medical consultant. Always committed to education, Kirk was a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at the University Of Virginia School Of Medicine from 1980-2009.

In 2009, Kirk retired from Pulmonary Medicine Associates in Roanoke and moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, joining in a partnership at Lung and Sleep Associates of Las Cruces. During this time he also worked for Memorial Medical Center, Mountain View Regional Medical Center and the Advanced Care Hospital of Southern New Mexico. He retired from Medical practice in 2013, but continued to work as a pulmonary and occupational consultant and part-time for Weatherby Healthcare as a Medical Doctor.

Kirk genuinely enjoyed medicine and sharing his knowledge with others. He also loved gliding and was a member of the White Sands Soaring Association. More than anything, he cherished spending time with his grandchildren and was extremely proud of them. He loved traveling throughout the world, and Kirk was a true foodie before it was fashionable.

Kirk is survived by his wife Pam, the love of his life, and his little buddy King Neptune. Children K J and Rachel Hippensteel, Anthony and Sarah Moreno II and Brittany Moreno. "Papa Kirk" was blessed with six beautiful grandchildren, whom he loved with all of his heart and brought him much happiness, pride and joy: Kaylee Breanna Davis, Joshua Anthony Gutierrez, (Trey) Anthony Lee Moreno III, Dakota Jordan Moreno, Jacob Elliott Robles and Phillip Matthew Moreno. Siblings Peter and Delores Hippensteel, Bruce and Judy Hippensteel, Stan and Jean Hippensteel and Lynn Hippensteel, as well as many nieces and nephews. In laws, Martha and Marvin Edwards of Bedford, Virginia. Special Auntie Eleanor Blankenship of College Park, Marlyand. Kirk is also survived by extended family members Dennis and Dottie Sink of Hardy, Virginia, Dr. Rick and Lynda Castle of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina and special 'little brother' Ruben and Joanne Ramirez.

Kirk was preceded in death by his parents Dale and Thelma Hippensteel, father-in-law James A. Krantz of Huddleston, Virginia and son Phillip Michael Moreno of Roanoke, Virginia.

Sunland Park City, Doňa Ana Co., NM, Plea Agreement

Albuquerque Journal (NM) - December 21, 2012

Deceased Name: Ex-City Manager Gets Probation Former Official Will Testify in Other Cases

LAS CRUCES — Former Sunland Park city manager Jaime Aguilera was sentenced to five years of supervised probation Thursday after pleading guilty to extortion and other charges related to the ill-fated attempt to force a candidate from the mayoral race with a video featuring a topless woman. Aguilera, 62, faced a January trial in the notorious case when he decided to plead guilty to charges of extortion, tampering with evidence and conspiracy. Under the terms of the plea agreement filed in the last days of the term of District Attorney Amy Orlando, Aguilera faced six years of prison time, which were suspended in favor of a five-year term of probation. Aguilera had little to say about the admission of guilt either in court or after the proceeding. Aguilera, who gained leniency by cooperating with investigators following his arrest last February, declined to answer questions. His attorney, Herman Ortiz, said it would be difficult for Aguilera to comment until he finishes testifying in other pending criminal cases.

In court, Aguilera told District Judge Jacinto Palomino, "I apologize for any harm I may have caused to those other parties." Aguilera admitted conspiring with former Sunland Park City Councilor and Mayor pro tem Daniel Salinas, 29, along with several other city officials, in carrying out a plot to embarrass Salinas' main challenger, Gerardo Hernandez, from the mayoral race. Salinas won the March election, even after he was charged with extortion, but was never able to take office because terms of his release prevented him from speaking to municipal employees or even setting foot in city hall. According to local prosecutors, Salinas' group recruited a former reporter to infiltrate Hernandez's mayoral campaign and then arrange for a woman to perform a topless lap dance with Hernandez while the escapade was secretly recorded on video. In mid-February, a Mexican national recruited by the group approached Hernandez, a man with a church-going reputation. The man showed Hernandez a still image, one Aguilera had edited from the video, and threatened to release it unless Hernandez left the race. Instead, Hernandez contacted the District Attorney's Office, and a wide-ranging criminal investigation was launched.

Deputy District Attorney Steve Blankinship told Palomino that Aguilera had actively cooperated with investigators over "hours and hours," and that his cooperation resulted in the filing of "numerous" cases. Aguilera is required by his plea agreement to "testify truthfully" in 16 other public corruption cases, including four against Salinas, two against a former city councilor and two involving city contractors. Hernandez said Thursday he was surprised that Aguilera was not facing jail time as a result of the plea agreement. "In my perception, I think he (Aguilera) is more guilty than anybody else ... For being the oldest, and the one with more experience, he should have been more conscious of what he was doing," said Hernandez, referring to Salinas and other accused members of the Sunland Park administration who were in their 20s and 30s. "The young people — you think they are the masterminds?" Aguilera was not charged for his admitted involvement in Salinas' alleged bribery of an officer hired to be the Sunland Park police chief, or an alleged kickback scheme with a city contractor that used public funds to pay a man involved in the extortion case. Aguilera was hired twice as Sunland Park's city manager despite having pleaded guilty to a felony bribery charge in 2002 in Riverside County, Calif. The charge was reduced to a misdemeanor after Aguilera completed his three-year probation

+2016, Ruidoso Downs, Lincoln Co., NM, Obituary

Published in Ruidoso News from Aug. 26 to Sept. 25, 2016

Orval Eugene Blankenship left us, bound for Heaven on August 24, 2016. He went quickly and peacefully from his home in Ruidoso Downs, NM. Orval was born in Ranger, TX on October 28, 1929 and spent 87 wonderful years with us. We will all miss him so much.

Ruidoso Downs had been his home since 1971 when he and his wife of nearly 67 years, Bonnie Winona (Nona), journeyed from Sweetwater, Texas. Orval spent most of his life building and constructing, both in Sweetwater and in Ruidoso. He started Circle B Campground in 1971 and, many successful ventures later, left his family with his latest (and last) business venture, Lotza Stuff Flea Market in Ruidoso Downs. He was truly an entrepreneur and worked hard his entire life to provide for his family and leave a legacy.

Having left home at the young age of 13, he struck out on his own. He met and married Bonnie Winona Estes in Anton, Texas on August 28, 1949. They had three wonderful children, Sherry, Karen and Stephen, which resulted in five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Orval was a member of Ruidoso Downs First Baptist Church. In the last years gardening and especially tomatoes were his passion, along with "junking" as he called it, with Nona. Nona will sorely miss him, as will his three children, their spouses Larry, Ray and Shamie. He was a wonderful grandfather to Jennifer Brack, Scott Stevens, Rusty Smith, Rheanna Archer and Jonathon Blankenship. He will be remembered fondly by all of them and their spouses.

Please contact LaGrone Funeral home in Ruidoso for funeral details, 257-7303.

2016, Wheatland, Quay Co., NM, Obituary

Published in the Clovis News Journal on Mar. 15, 2016

William R. Hutchison was born in Wheatland, NM on March 16, 1933, passed away on March 12, 2016, at 82 years.

He was preceded in death by his infant son, Charles R Hutchison who was only 2 days old; parents, Charles Hutchison and Florence Murdick Hutchison; sisters, Viola H Thomas and Pauline H Smith; brothers, Charles, James & Albert Hutchison.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Blankenship Hutchison after being married 59 years; sons, Wes and Joel Hutchison; nieces, Susan Smith Engle and Karen Hutchison; nephews, Rodney Smith, Karl and Charles Hutchison; and his many loving cousins and friends.

Services will be conducted by his cousin, Rick Hutchison, at Muffley Funeral Home Chapel, on Saturday, March 19, 2016, at 1 pm. William will be laid to rest at the Grady Cemetery, located near his childhood home.

William was the youngest of six children and grew up on a wheat farm in New Mexico. He may have been the little brother but he was very much a giant in many people's lives. After he met his wonderful wife Carol, he pursued his dream and took his family with him to where ever the job was. William's first job as a pilot had him flying a helicopter to lay cable up Sandia Peak for the tramway. His next job was for Air America which resulted in him taking the family to live in Thailand for 9 years. He flew rescue and covert missions in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. He worked closely with the CIA with mission planning and coordinating for the war effort. He had many, many close calls in which his aircraft was hit multiple times by gunfire and he survived crash landings. He received an accommodation from the Air Force for finding and rescuing two of their F-4 fighter pilots who had been shot down. His bravery performing his job would save lives and serve his country. Most people would be surprised that William lived and worked in so many places from New Mexico to Alabama, Florida, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Saudi Arabia, Panama, Venezuela, Surinam, China, The Bahamas, Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands and Nome, Alaska. He commented how beautiful the Northern Lights were dancing overhead while he was flying at about 10,000 feet and 40 degrees below zero. Incredible. Whenever asked, the children were always so proud to say "My Dad's a Pilot". William could never truly appreciate how much he enriched their lives with his experience, intelligence, wit and drive. They saw him as FEARLESS!

+2017, Santa Fe, Santa Fe Co., NM, Obituary

The Santa Fe New Mexican, (NM) - November 3, 2017

Historian Richard West Sellars died quietly at his home in Santa Fe on November 1, 2017, after a struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Decatur, TX, in 1935, he was the son of wildcatter oilman Robert Thompson Sellars, Sr. and schoolteacher Johnnie Mae Blankenship Sellars and grew up knowing the security of a multigenerational network of relatives and friends in that small town.

He left there to attend Baylor University, graduating with a degree in geology in 1957. After a few years as an independent oilman in Jackson, MS, he realized that his interests actually lay more in history, geography, and literature. He furthered his education in these fields at North Texas State University and the University of Missouri--Columbia, earning a Ph.D in Western History in 1972.

Although his goal had originally been to teach on the college level, he immediately found employment with the National Park Service upon receiving his degree. Soon he wholeheartedly embraced a career that afforded not only intellectual analysis of National Park Service historical and natural park units, but also interesting travel; he visited at least 350 of these sites. From 1979 to 1988 he headed the Southwest Cultural Resources Center in Santa Fe, overseeing programs in history, archaeology, and historic architecture for the Southwest Region and Servicewide programs in submerged cultural resources. He served as acting superintendent at Pea Ridge National Military Park and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. He also was a consultant with the Dallas County Historical Foundation on preservation and interpretation of the Texas School Book Depository and Dealey Plaza in Dallas, TX, site of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, in planning today's Sixth Floor Museum.

It was in writing and lecturing that he found the greatest satisfaction. His articles on American history and cultural and natural resource preservation appeared in numerous publications, and he frequently taught courses on preservation philosophy, policy, and practice and historic preservation at National Park Service training centers and various universities. He is best known as the author of Preserving Nature in the National Parks: A History, published in 1997 by Yale University Press and the chief catalyst for a major initiative by the National Park Service to revitalize natural resource management in the parks. After his retirement in 2008, he worked on a history of cultural resources management in the National Park Service, which remains unfinished. His achievements were recognized by the National Park Service and related organizations with the Eastern National Authors Award in 1997, the George P. Hartzog award and the U.S. Department of the Interior Meritorious Service Award in 2008, and the George Melendez Wright Award for Excellence in 2011. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to preservation principles and devotion to the National Park Service.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Thompson Sellars, Jr.

Surviving members of his family include his sister, Sally James Florian and her husband, sister-in-law Sharon Sellars, cousin Ben Man and his wife Kareen, in-laws Robert and Alice Stevenson, nieces Amanda Callinan, Melinda ("Tenna") Florian, Kathryn Sellars, nephews Jason Florian and Trevor Stevenson, three great nieces, and his wife of forty years, Judith Stevenson Sellars.

There will be no funeral, but a memorial service will be held in early 2018, and his ashes will be buried in the Sellars family plot in Decatur, TX at a later date.
