Las Vegas
Review-Journal (NV) -

Deceased Name: Robert E. 'Bobby' Morris - Founder of Las Vegas
Tourist Bureau dies at 68
Review-Journal
Robert E. 'Bobby' Morris, a tourism pioneer who started the Las Vegas Tourist
Bureau, was the perfect host for Las Vegas. 'He fit Vegas and the town fit
him,' said John Woodrum, a friend of Morris for 30
years. 'Everything an out-of-town person coming into the city would need, he
could get for them.' Morris died Wednesday from a fall down some concrete stairs
after leaving a local restaurant, Woodrum said. He
was 68. A former restaurant and tavern owner, Morris moved to Las Vegas from
Miami about 35 years ago. He opened the first reservation and tourist
information center on Boulder Highway, then coordinated
tour junkets for the Hacienda hotel. He later managed the Jockey Club
time-share resort, then used his experience in the
tourism industry to open the Las Vegas Tourist Bureau at the south end of the
Strip. Morris was also a partner in Las Vegas Tour & Travel, becoming one
of the largest suppliers of visitors for the air tour business to the Grand
Canyon. He ran a bus tour company, a travel agency and helped his wife, Joan,
establish Rae's Supper Club. At one time, he had 125 employees working for him,
said Woodrum, owner of the Klondike hotel and casino
next to the Las Vegas Tourist Bureau. 'He was the fun-lovingest
guy God ever put on this Earth,' Woodrum said. 'A typical Irishman who liked to party. He once told me,
'The world's a party and I'm the host.'" Morris' favorite saying when
anyone asked how he was, according to Woodrum, was,
'Amen. I ain't never had a bad day.'
Morris was born Aug. 20, 1931, in Parsonsburg, Md. He served in the
Army and was honorably discharged in 1949.
He is survived by his wife, Joan; two sons, John and Steven; and
six grandchildren.
Viewing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bunkers Mortuary, 925 N. Las Vegas Blvd. Services by Jerry Blankenship will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Bunkers
Cemetery, 1216 N. Las Vegas Blvd.
