Schoolboy, 15, Shot to Death in Gang Error
New York, May 1 (Special)-- Teen-age gangsterism hit a sordid low yesterday with the slaying of
a high school boy who found out the hard way that juvenile delinquency makes
streets unsafe after dark. Shot down at 9 p.m. on a lighted street was William Blankenship Jr., 15, a sofomore
in St. Michael's High school, who was strolling near his home with a classmate.
The slayer, a young hoodlum, was captured by police after a few hours. He said
it was all a mistake. He thought, when he fired, that Blankenship was a member of a rival teen-age gang, he said.
Find Gun in Home, The slayer is Frank Santana, 17, a student at the
Bronx Haaran High school, and member of a Bronx
teen-age gang known as the "Navajos." He confessed the fatal shooting
after police located the death gun, an Italian Beretto
automatic, in a lavatory tank in the bathroom of his home. Santana said he had
been roughed up last week by members of another gang, the "Golden
Guineas," and that he was carrying a gun to avenge the indignity. He had a
dozen members of his gang with him when Blankenship came
along on his way to the movies. "Are you a member of the Golden
Guineas?" the teen-age gangsters demanded. Blankenship
denied such membership but Santana's gun flashed in the hand of one of his
cronies to whom he had lent it. Blankenship told
the tough not to point the gun at him; Santana grabbed it from his wavering
colleague and fired once.
"We're Whipped," Says Father, The bullet entered Blankenship 's left arm and pierced his heart. He fell
dead. The hoodlums sped away, some on foot and some on bicycles. Blankenship 's father is a medical research director and
Bronx civic leader who has grappled with the juvenile delinquency problem as
president of the Brownwood advisory council. His son, a football player, had
never run with gangs and had been permitted out of the house after 9 p.m. only
on Fridays and Saturdays. "We're whipped," the father said.
"We've been caught and crushed. We're going to leave the city."
After services tomorrow in a Bronx chapel he will move his family
to a rural district in Pennsylvania, he said. PHOTO CAPTION: Blankenship (top) and Santana
