1975, New York City, New York Co., NY, Obituary

Chicago Tribune (IL) - January 05, 1975

Kenneth W. Colegrove, 88, a vigorous anti-Communist and backer of the late United States Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the early 1950s, died Friday in his home in New York City. Mr. Colegrove, who retired in 1952 as chairman of the political science department at Northwestern University, was an adviser to several U. S. presidents, including Herbert Hoover, and was a close friend and adviser to Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

After retirement from Northwestern, Mr. Colegrove moved to New York where he taught at Queens College and helped Long Island University establish graduate programs in history and political science at one of its campuses. After Leaving Long Island in 1969, he became the first senior research associate of the Center for the Study of the Presidency in New York City. During the McCarthy era, when the Wisconsin senator was accused of "red baiting," Mr. Colegrove repeatedly promised that McCarthy would "get all the sordid facts behind the alleged protection of Communists in government under the New Deal in the last 40 years," as he once said in 1953. He also repeatedly spoke out against foreign aid and loss of power thru joining the United Nations. He wrote a number of books including "Democracy versus Communism" and "The Menace of Communism." A native of Iowa, who received his doctorate in 1915 from Harvard University,

Mr. Colegrove is survived by his widow, the former Mrs. Walter St. John; a daughter, Mrs. Marian Louise Blankenship; a grandson, and two sisters.

Memorial services will be held Monday in New York City.
