1990, Pryor, Mayes Co., OK, Obituary
Tulsa World (OK) - June 8, 1990 (Friday)
Gene R. Redden, the man who transformed 10,000 acres of war surplus
real estate into Oklahoma's largest industrial park, died Thursday (07Jun1990). He was 70. Services will be
at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Pryor, under the direction
of the Jim Green Funeral Home. Burial will be at Grand Memorial Cemetery in
Pryor.
Redden was born in Durham in western Oklahoma. He attended Southwestern
State University at Weatherford and what is now Oklahoma State University. He
moved to Pryor at the end of World War II as a war assets administrator to
oversee the closing of a DuPont powder plant. While in Pryor he saw the
potential of developing the area into an industrial park. He assembled a group
of Pryor citizens and formed the Oklahoma Ordnance Works Authority. The group
bought the land and established the Mid-America Industrial Park. Today the
industrial park is the site of 41 industries, including Georgia Pacific,
National Gypsum, Phillips Driscopipe, Pryor Foundry
Division of J.I. Case, and Robel Tissue Mills. More than 3,000 people work at
the park. Redden was appointed chief administrator of the park in 1961 and held
the position at his death. Some of Redden's duties
included operating the industrial plant, recruiting new industry, and
overseeing the operations of the Pryor airport, water treatment plant, and two
wastewater treatment plants. He served in the Navy in World War II, and was a
member of the American Legion, First United Methodist Chruch,
Elks and Masonic Lodges and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Jamsie; two
sons, Robert H. Redden of Broken Arrow and Roger C. Redden of McAlester; two
daughters, Jane Campbell of Pryor and Mary Blankenship of
Yukon; a brother, Joe Redden of Cheyenne; and five grandchildren.

Tulsa Co., OK, Obituary
Tulsa World (OK) - June 12, 1990
W. K. Warren, Philanthropist,
Oilman, Dies, William K.
Warren, Tulsa oilman, philanthropist and builder of Saint Francis Hospital,
died Monday. He was 92. A rosary service is scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
and a Mass for 10 a.m. Thursday. Both will be at Christ the King Catholic
Church.
Warren, who retired in 1961, never stopped working, said William Lissau, president of the William K. Warren Foundation. Lissau said Warren continued to meet with the foundation's
executive committee to review investments and contributions "up until the
end." "He's done so many things for the city, so many things that
were unknown," Lissau said. "He is really
the last of the pioneer breed in Tulsa and he will be sorely missed," he
added.
Former Mayor Robert LaFortune said he was
a child when he met Warren for the first time. "My dad was in business
with him back in 1922," he said. LaFortune said
Warren's contributions to economic development and medical care in Tulsa have
been significant. "There aren't many philanthropists who would outrank Mr.
Warren," he said. "He's been a part of virtually all of the viable
growth years of our community. He's given away a tremendous amount of the
wealth he's accumulated in Tulsa."
Clyde Cole, president of the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce, said
Warren's death marked the end of an era. Cole said Warren was instrumental in
Tulsa's economic development. "He was, probably more than any other
person, responsible for bringing Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.'s head office
to Tulsa," he said. "I use that only as an example." Warren was
one of the men who started companies from scratch and built them into major
Tulsa businesses, Cole said. "He's the last one. They're all gone,"
Cole said. Through the foundation, Warren's most recent contribution to Tulsa
was Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital, 6655 S. Yale Ave. The $20
million, eight-building facility opened on March 1, 1990, licensed for 135
beds.
Warren moved to Oklahoma from Nashville, Tenn., where he was a
newspaper carrier. He recalled a hospital patient from Oklahoma, who bought his
newspapers, convinced him of Oklahoma's great opportunity and prompted him to
move to the state. Warren was the founder of Warren Petroleum Co., which merged
with Gulf Oil Co. The firm later was purchased by Chevron USA Inc. He was the
president of the International Petroleum Exposition in 1966, and was associated
with that show conducted in Tulsa, except the first one in 1923.
After retiring, Warren until 1972 remained director emeritus of his
company, the world's largest distributor of liquified
petroleum gas. When his company merged with Gulf in 1956, Warren said:
"This was a good thing for us and for Gulf. It gave us fields of
production in such countries as Venezuela, Norway, Sweden, Kuwait, and Brazil.
It gave Gulf an entry into the LPG field." Warren Petroleum was a pioneer
in the movement of liquified petroleum by sea. One of
the earliest LPG ships was named the Natalie O. Warren, for his wife.
Warren's plans to build Saint Francis Hospital, which is estimated
to be worth $110 million, began in 1951. He also established the William K.
Warren Medical Research Center and the Natalie Warren Bryant Cancer Center,
named after a daughter. Warren was also a major supporter of St. John Medical
Center and constructed two physicians' office buildings in Tulsa.
His success in the oil industry allowed his humanitarian generosity
to flourish through the William K. Warren Foundation, which built Saint
Francis. Recalling his early days in Nashville, Warren said, "Once I rode
a bicycle more than 70 miles round-trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn., from Nashville
to deliver newspapers to St. Thomas Hospital. I think that's when I first
became interested in hospitals and the services they provide." On building
Saint Francis, he said, "You don't come up with a new hospital overnight.
It took 2 1/2 years to draw plans for Saint Francis Hospital and 2 1/2 years to
build it." Several additions to the hospital expanded the number of
operating rooms and beds.
In 1981, he announced plans to develop Warren Place, a $400 million
office and park complex on the southwest corner of 61st Street and Yale Avenue,
across from Saint Francis. Part of the income from the operation of Warren
Place was to be given to the Warren Medical Research Center, a foundation
supporting Saint Francis Hospital.
Warren's oil-industry career began when he joined Gypsy Oil Co. in
Tulsa at age 18. He was an accountant for the firm and did contract work at
night for other oil companies. In 1919, Warren left the accounting office to
gain field experience as a toolpusher for Gilliland
Oil Co. in Texas. He then transferred to Gilliland's Shreveport, La., office,
in charge of payrolls, tank farms and other operations. Warren returned to
Tulsa as an assistant to Patrick Hurley, vice president of Gilliland, and later
Secretary of War in the Hoover administration. Warren resigned from Gilliland
on March 15, 1922, to form his own firm in Tulsa in the Atco Building. "No
other oil company was organized especially to market natural gasoline, so we
had plenty of growing room," Warren said. The firm began with two
employees - Warren and his wife, who served as his receptionist.
The Warren organization rapidly grew and by May 1926, the company
controlled the output of 31 gas processing plants in five states. By May 1929,
more than 50 gas-processing plants were operated by the company. In 1930,
Warren purchased the entire national gasoline production of Amerada Petroleum
Corp. In November, 1931, the firm set an industry record by shipping 1,300 tank
cars. A 10-year record was reached in April 1932 when Warren marketed 500
million gallons of natural gas liquids.
By 1934 the company controlled 11.6 percent of the LPG market and
16.1 percent of the natural gas market. A $20 million
business by 1936, the firm employed more than 240 people and marketed 160
million gallons of natural gas annually. At its 16th anniversary in
March 1938, the firm's storage facilities were increased to handle 21 million
gallons. In June 1941, Warren bought 30 liquified
petroleum gas tank cars, which when added to the company's 2,415-tank car fleet
made it the largest fleet in the Southwest. Warren added to his empire: In May
1946, the Hanlon companies in 1946; Devonian Oil Co. in 1946-47. Warren started
Transwestern Pipeline Co. in 1959 to give his company
an entry into the California gas market. By 1960, the company owned 23 natural
gas plants and held interests in 22 others.
His civic accomplishments and honors were as widespread. In 1987,
Warren was inducted into the Tulsa Hall of Fame. Warren contributed funds to
endow lectureships at Vanderbilt University. He received a Business Hall of
Fame Award from Junior Achievement in 1981. He received the "Outstanding
Layman" award in 1978 from the Oklahoma State Medical Association's House
of Delegates. Warren was cited for "distinguished service" to the
medical profession and citizens of Tulsa in 1979 by the American Medical
Association. Warren also received the Award of Merit of the Oklahoma Hospital
Association. In 1960, Warren received the Humanitarian Award from the National
Jewish Hospital and National Asthma Center. He received the award for
"decades of philanthropic service to his community." Warren was a
trustee of the University of Tulsa and a member of the Oklahoma Hall of Fame.
He held honorary degrees from TU, the University of Notre Dame, Catholic
University and Villanova University. In 1964 he received the Distinguished
Service Citation from the University of Oklahoma as the state's
"outstanding citizen."
Survivors include his wife, Natalie; five daughters, Dorothy King, Elizabeth Blankenship, Patricia Swindle, Marilyn Vandever, and Jean Marie Warren; a son, William K. Warren
Jr.; 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
