When he was 19 he took his first pastorate in Kinnickinnic, Wisconsin while he finished Bible School. "I had a lot of zeal, but not much knowledge, he chuckled. He was an avid reader with an extensive professional library. In 1965 they moved to Montana where he had churches in Kalispell and Gildford, then to Cambridge, Idaho. In 1989 they retired to Lebanon, Oregon as he continued pastoring in interim work. Conrad was an active pastor for 54 years.

Conrad had a passion for helping people who were "down on their luck, whether providing gas or groceries to stranded travelers, driving battered women to a shelter, or ministering to troubled teens in an outdoor setting. He always had a couple of horses and/or mules. Hunting and packing trips were annual events. He was the cowboy preacher, sharing coffee and stories with ranch hands at coffee shops. A beloved pastor to many folks, he always served in rural areas where he ministered to the whole community.

Conrad is survived by his wife of 65 years, June Rhoads of Lebanon; his sons: Jim Rhoads and wife Marilee of Upland, California and Jerry Rhoads and wife Amy of Vancouver, Washington; daughters: Donna DeFea and husband Darryl of Sutherlin and Janice Blankenship and husband Brien of Medford; a brother and three sisters: including Kathryn McDuffie of Sweet Home; nine grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
