+2010, Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co., PA, Obituary

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10337/1107818-122.stm
By Diana Nelson Jones, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Friday, December 03, 2010

Earl August Blankenship, Aug. 11, 1924 - Nov. 24, 2010. Earl Blankenship, fresh out of college with a forestry degree, married Pittsburgh girl Betty Louise O'Dell in 1948 and moved here from Florida. The city's forestry department hired him as a laborer. Seven years later, he was supervising the forestry division, a job he held for 20 years.

Mr. Blankenship, who died at age 86 on Nov. 24 in Springfield, Mo., is remembered for transforming the forestry division and commanding respect for his persistence in doing so. Bob Coyner worked as his assistant. He said Mr. Blankenship "was one of the most significant people in arbor care in Western Pennsylvania." He went to the mat to get appropriations, raises and needed equipment at a time when "we did everything by hand," Mr. Coyner said. "There was one chain saw and it took an act of Congress to use it. "In the 10 years I was there, he modernized the division with all new equipment. We got a dozen chain saws, three brush chippers, two bucket trucks and stump machines. He fought with city council tooth and nail to get the equipment we needed."

One Saturday, Mr. Blankenship rallied a crew to help an elderly woman on the North Side who had a huge dead Carolina poplar in her yard. They cut the tree on their own time at no cost to her. Louise Brown directed parks and recreation when Mr. Blankenship supervised forestry. "He was just a wonderful man, funny, very smart and so responsive to the city neighborhoods," she said. "We had a neighborhood tree planting program, and he was good at instilling that pruning be done properly." When budget cuts came, she said, "he was able to keep things going, tighten the belt and get the job done."

Joseph Natoli worked for the city for 35 years, some of it with Mr. Blankenship. "He knew the whole business about trees. He knew his stuff," said Mr. Natoli. "At that time he had four crews and ran a very good department and had the respect of the city fathers. I enjoyed working for him."

In 1985, the Blankenships moved to Inverness, Fla., where Betty died in 1994.  On a visit to a sister outside Springfield, Mo., he met Mildred Crane Nelson, a widow, "and they wound up getting married," said a son-in-law, Tom Leonard. "He wasn't a big fan of Florida so he stayed where she was."

"When I think of my dad I always think of such a good man," said his daughter, Christine Matviya of New Alexandria. "He was generally cheerful and could forget anger quickly. "We all grew up learning about trees," she said. "He gave us the Latin name. We would be driving and he'd say, 'Check out that Kentucky Coffeetree, and my mother would say, 'Keep your eye on the road, Earl.' "

Mr. Blankenship was born in Jersey City, N.J., and raised in Longwood, Fla. He served on a Navy destroyer in the Pacific during World War II. After service, he earned his degree from the University of Florida. He was a founding member of the Society of Municipal Arborists. After his retirement from the city, Mr. Blankenship operated the Earl Blankenship Tree Service.

In addition to Ms. Matviya, he is survived by another daughter, Beth Ann Covelli of St. Charles, Ill.; two sons, Robert Blankenship of Longwood, Fla., and Damon Blankenship of Ross; and 11 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 11 at the Community Presbyterian Church of Ben Avon, 7501 Church Ave.

2013, Towanda, Bradford Co., PA, Obituary

Published in Daily Review on Dec. 19, 2013

Robert Rubendall Jr., 61, of Towanda, Pa., went home to his Lord and Savior on December 16, 2013, at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre. Robert Lee Rubendall Jr. was born September 8, 1952 in Pottstown, Pa., one of six children in the family of Robert Sr. and Delores (Nolan) Rubendall.

In his earlier years, Bob graduated from Perkiomen Valley High School in Collegeville, Pa., and later served our country during the Vietnam War with the U.S. Air Force as a radar operator stationed ninety miles north of Gnome, Ark.

Seventeen years ago, on September 21, 1996 Bob married the former Caroline (Westra) Pickett in Towanda. He then became a part of Caroline and her family's lives; becoming a husband, a father, and a grandfather all at once. This was probably the biggest shock of Bob's life, having been a bachelor for 44 years. Bob was a bit rough around the edges, a little untried; but God had a plan for him, regardless of his flaws and inexperience. Through the years, he showed his family and friends what perseverance, selflessness, kindness, respect, patience, and generosity were all about. Bob was a constant source of encouragement, solidarity, and help during times of need.

Bob was an active and faithful member of the New Life Church. He served in many capacities including teaching the Understanding God Class for Adults, playing drums for their worship team and was the church's undisputed horseshoe champion for three years. An avid sports fan, Bob enjoyed watching football and baseball games. His favorite teams were the Philadelphia Eagles and Philadelphia Phillies. He enjoyed taking on projects at home, tinkering with the farm equipment, making improvements, taking care of the fields, and deer hunting. Though he was always busy between working, farming, and teaching at the church; he never missed an opportunity to participate in family events as well. He liked to play music and was an excellent drummer. Bob carried this passion with him to ministry with New Life and pleasure with his friends in "The Old Man Band," which gathers monthly. Bob was also a founding member of the "Moon Fest," which takes place semi-annually, and looked forward to it every time it came around. He was always happy to share his insight, experiences, and views with his family, friends, and acquaintances. Bob also had many talents. He was a football player in his high school days and played in several garage bands with his friends during his 20s.

He lived in Michigan for several years, where he worked as a surveyor to open up land for pipelines. After moving back to Pennsylvania, he started his own business, Rubendall Construction, where he worked as a carpenter and electrician for over 40 years. Bob was mechanically inclined, always fixing one thing or another. He was a highly motivated individual, an energetic go getter who prided himself in his work and reputation. He was an early riser who was not afraid of the work and toil that accompanied each day. Bob was also an accomplished story teller and loved to relate his experiences with friends and coworkers whenever he could.

In addition to his parents Robert Sr. and Delores Rubendall of Schwenksville, Pa., Bob is survived by his wife Caroline; two step-children Jennifer (Mark) Sheeley of Ulster, Pa., and Seth Pickett (his fiancée, Maria Padilla) both of Canton, Pa.; eight step-grandchildren, Daniel, Jessica, Heather, Logan, Isaac, Madison, Jada and Jacey; three sisters and two brothers Betsy (Steve) Bernstiel of San Antonio, Fla., Mary Ellen (Phil) Schaffer of Wernersville, Pa., Bruce (Tracy) Rubendall of Douglasville, Pa., Rick (Amy) Rubendall of Blountville, Tenn., Darlene (John) Gemmell of Wernersville, Pa.; many nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends; Joe and Dee Righter of Fassett, Pa., Guire and Pat Webb, Brad McClure all of Troy, Pa. and Paul and Danette Hamburger of Columbia Cross Roads, Pa.

He was predeceased by his step daughter, Sarah Pickett Blankenship and dear friend, Nathan Snyder.

Friends are invited to call from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 20, at the New Life Church, 299 McMurray Rd. in Canton Twp. His pastor, Rev. Glen Landis, will officiate the funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Franklin Center Cemetery.

With family at his side, the Alzheimer's Villain stole the life of Harold Elias Reed, 83, at Landis Homes, Lititz, [Lancaster Co.,] PA, December 13, 2017, but Harold had the last word! 2016, North Huntingdon, Westmoreland Co., PA, Obituary

Published in Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Mar. 6, 2016

Katherine Ann (Lowry) Swope, Age 94, of North Huntingdon, was called home on Thursday, March 3, 2016.

Kate led a full and fun life. She loved belting her alto parts with her Sweet Adelines and being with her special friends "The Turtlelettes." Being an excellent seamstress, Kate made many of their performance costumes. She also loved to crochet, making cute outfits for babies all over Pittsburgh. Kate loved to travel spending summers in Stone Harbor, performing with her Sweet Adelines in London, and living in places such as Northern Michigan and Mexico on the Sea of Cortez.

Kate was known for being witty, patriotic, having a 10 cent novel stash, and being an avid fan of her Pittsburgh sports teams. She had a wonderfully wicked (and sometimes naughty) sense of humor. She loved laughing and joking and being the life of the party. She was known for her kick-butt bingo skills and her fierce competiveness; especially in the game of scrabble in which her opponent was doomed the moment they agreed to play with her.

Kate was an amazing cook and welcomed everyone to her table. Although Kate never had children of her own, she was Mother, Aunt, and Grandmother to many. After her sister, JoAnne passed away, she raised her three nephews, Mike, Chuck, and Roy Poole; having an extra special bond with Roy. She was especially proud of Roy's children, Crystal and Shane; and great-great-nephew, Cori.

Kate married Jack Swope in 1982. She inherited a daughter, Jacqueline (Swope) Droschak (Allan); and three sons, James (Louise), Michael, and Robert Swope; and eight grandchildren, Amy (Droschak) Lewis, Michael Droschak (Lori), Regis, Joyce, Robert, Dominque, Benjamin, and Christopher Swope; and a great-grandson, Eli Droschak.
