Franklin Ernest Burris, 99, died at 12:10 a.m. on October 29, 2007,
at his daughter's house in Gem Lakes, Aiken, SC. Memorial Services will be held
at another time with his ashes being scattered in Maine. SC Cremation &
Burial Society is assisting the family.
Franklin was born July 26, 1908, to Thomas and Bertha (Swicker) Burris in Somerville, MA. He had 2 brothers, Ralph
and Russell; 2 sisters, Beulah and Esther. He attended schools there until
their move to West Bethel, ME, in 1914. He graduated from Gould Academy in
Bethel, ME, in 1926 & Bates College in Lewiston, ME, in 1930. All 7 of
their living children were born in West Bethel, Maine, from 1939 to 1954.
During the Depression years his jobs were picking fir and spruce
cones for the WPA (more profitable than chopping wood), haying, logging, and
working in a wood mill. By the time he wed Doris Smith of Lowell, MA, in 1938 he was working for the State of Maine Dept. of
Roads, a fair weather job for years, so he continued logging during the
winters. Because he was too old and with 4 children to enlist in WWII, he tried
working as a welder in a South Portland shipyard until using torches in cramped
hull spaces caused him to leave. He instead helped build the Brunswick Air Base
runways. He retired from the State of Maine Road Dept. in 1974 and moved to
Indialantic, FL, where he lived in the same home until 8-18-2006 when he moved
into his daughter Mary's home. For 6 years after his wife's stroke in 1991 he
was the sole caregiver with intermittent help from his children.
He loved to travel and after his wife died he was able to cruise
through the Panama Canal; go on a tour of the western National Parks; visit Key
West; and attend many grandchildren's weddings and family trips and just ride
around town. He was preceded in death by a newborn daughter, his wife, and
their third daughter, Cynthia Waugh.
He is survived by his sister, Esther Lathrop (Vancouver, WA) and
his children: June Blankenship (Indialantic, FL), Gloria Hopkins (and
David of St. Augustine, FL), Linda Watson (and Tom of Kearney, NE), Margaret
Wilson (and Remmel of Valencia, CA), Mary Lockwood
(and Jonathan of Aiken, SC), and Franklin Joseph Burris (and Janet of Solon,
IA) and many (17) grandchildren and (22) great-grandchildren.
