+2002, Layton, Davis Co., UT, Obituary

The Salt Lake Tribune, (UT) - June 12, 2002

A long-time resident of Layton, Gola Marian Blankenship, passed away in her sleep of natural causes on June 10, 2002, after a brief stay at a local care center. Gola was born in Scofield, Carbon County, Utah, on November 27, 1911, to William Newsome Moseley, a few years after her grandfather, John Pitman, was killed in the Scofield Mine Disaster of May 1, 1900. Gola attended the Scofield Elementary School until her family moved to Salt Lake City when she was eight. Her parents purchased a home at 940 East 17th South in Salt Lake City, where her family resided for many years. She attended Irving Jr. High School, and she graduated from East High School, where she enjoyed running track. She then attended the L.D.S. Business College.

Gola married Sgt. James Clifford Blankenship of the Army Air Corps, on May 18, 1932, at Farmington, Utah. Jimmy was a pilot and mechanic flying the mail throughout the western states. His job was extremely dangerous, as flying the mail during this time period was done in open-cockpit biplanes. They soon transferred to the Presidio at San Francisco, where their two oldest sons were born, James Clifford Jr. (born in 1933), and William Clayton (born in 1935). Gola's father was very ill in 1934, and she took her infant son Jimmy to Utah by train to see her family. She was very close to her family throughout her life; her mother said she was a special favorite of her father, and she loved her parents and brothers and sisters.

Their next assignment was at Fort Lewis, Washington, where a daughter, Ann Estelle, was born in 1938. The family continued to be transferred to military assignments, and a third son, Ernest Stephan, was born in Biloxi, Mississippi, in 1942 before Jimmy was transferred to overseas duty in Africa (and later with the Army Air Corps 20th Bomber Command in China, India and the Mariana Islands).

During the war Jimmy was away for three years; Gola and her children moved to Salt Lake City to be near her mother and brother and sisters. After the war, the family was reunited and transferred to Muroc (Edward's AFB) near Lancaster, CA, where Richard Dean was born in 1946.

Jimmy was assigned to assist with the Berlin Airlift in 1948, so the family moved to Wicsbaden, Germany. The children attended military dependents schools and lived for a time in a huge home that had belonged to German military personnel. In 1950 they returned to the U.S., and Jimmy (now Major Blankenship ) was assigned to Hill Air Force Base. Jimmy retired in 1957, and he passed away in 1990.

After Jimmy retired Gola worked at the Army Air Force Exchange for 11 years before retiring. Gola lived in the same home at 625 Adams St., for 52 years. She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

The following family members preceded Gola in death: her daughter Ann (died in an automobile accident in 1957); her mother Elizabeth; her husband Jimmy; her sisters Leona Katherine, Delilah, Amy Virginia, Elizabeth (Beth) and LoRena; her brothers William Nelson, Harry Clayton, and Robert Clayton.

Survivors include Gola's sons: James Clifford Jr. (Colleen) of Boise, Idaho; William Clayton of Sunset, Utah; Ernest Stephan (Ilene) Of Wellsville, Utah; and Richard Dean (Marla) of Roy, Utah. She is survived by 20 grandchildren and 22 great-grand-children.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 13, 2002 at 11 a.m. Fort Douglas Veteran's Memorial Park.

Ken loved driving his truck, four-wheeling and hunting, and doing almost anything as long as it involved being outdoors. His family and his dogs were the joy of his life. To the end, the sight of his grandchildren put a big smile on his face. He accepted his fate with grace and dignity, and he never complained, while those of us who loved him knew we would lose him much too soon.

The memorial service for Ken Haynes will begin at 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 2, 2007 at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Pkwy (10600 So.), South Jordan, Utah. Burial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, December 3, 2007, at the cemetery in Afton, Wyoming.

The Salt Lake Tribune, (UT) - April 12, 2003

Karen Johnson Pace, passed away peacefully and unexpectedly on April 10, 2003, at the Timpanogos Hospital in Orem. She lived her life to the fullest to the last breath. Her greatest joy in life was her family and her passion for adventure. This was exhibited by her attendance of all her grandchildren's births, blessings, baptisms and many other important events. To see Karen without her best friend, John, close by was rare. She also had a high level of confidence that led her to fulfilling many business dreams. Spending time with Karen brought laughter, joy, comfort and unexpected ideas. Karen's family reunions were not ordinary. Her zest for life led us all over the mountains of the Sawtooth Wilderness near Stanley, Idaho which was also her childhood playground. We will not forget the great times there.

She graced the presence of her family on July 24, 1940. Her parents Howard E. and Marjorie S. Johnson (deceased), older brother Dr. Paul H. Johnson (McIntosh, NM) and older sister Colleen J. Blankenship and husband Jim (Boise, ID). She attended Brigham Young University and graduated with her Bachelors in Psychology in 1962. In 1963 she married John C. Zaccardi, they were later divorced. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Anna-Marie Zaccardi (Lindon, UT); Karena Z. Jackson (Lindon, UT); and Angela Z. Hendrix (Orem, UT). In 1987 she graduated from Highland's University in Las Vegas, New Mexico with her Masters of Social Work. She has blessed the lives of people of all walks of life with her counseling skills, love, and devotion throughout New Mexico and Utah. On February 26, 1994 she married her best friend and eternal companion John D. Pace. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on February 26, 1997.

She was the proudest grandmother of Anzana Hendrix, Raneka Jackson, Victoria Jackson, Maegan Hendrix, Annelyse Hendrix, and John Z. Hendrix. She was also blessed to have wonderful stepchildren, Corie Chan, Alesha Scherzinger, Dustin Pace, Cindy Pace, Amber Pace and eight more grandchildren.

She is also survived by her friend and aunt Genevieve R. Sherner of Ogden, Utah. Numerous cousins and friends will miss her humorous spirit. Throughout her life her testimony of our Savior, Jesus Christ, was apparent by her devotion to leading by example for her children, family and friends. She faithfully taught many primary lessons with perseverance and faith. We love You Wife, Mom, Sister, Grandmother and Friend.
