West Virginia was the western part of
Virginia, after becoming a state the original county names were kept. And later divided to create more counties. For the Area Time
Lines, I have put Western Virginia and West Virginia all together in the WV
file.

Virginia. Governor's Office. Bounty warrants,
1779-1860
The act of the General Assembly, June 22,
1779, established the Virginia Land Office, also provided for the rewarding of
lands promised as bounty for specified Revolutionary War military service. The
purpose of the bounty land system was to encourage longer military service. In
order to qualify for bounty land, a soldier had to serve at least three (3)
years continuously in the State or Continental line. Militia service did not
count. Land awarded as bounty was in the present-day states of Ohio and
Kentucky.

"Will
of James Atkinson of Dale Parish, 26 cot. 1782,
mentions a John Blankenship (poss. born 1745) who will receive a part
of the estate upon Atkinson's death. This John must be the son of Ralph who was
the son of Ralph and Martha Blankinship. There also is mention of a Joseph Blankenship who is to be given a portion of the fruit
of the orchard of Atkinson for his entire lifetime. This Joseph must be Joseph,
son of Ralph who was the son of Ralph and Martha. It looks like this Joseph
must have married into the Atkinson family line. The witness on this will is Matthew Blankenship (b. 1748), another of the several sons of
Ralph Blankenship who was the son of Ralph and Martha Blankinship."

A History of The MiddleNew River Settlements and Contiguous Territory
By David E.
Johnston, Chapter IV. 1775
- 1794 (Part 9)
On an early Sunday morning in the month of March, Mr. Blankenship rose early, and went out to feed his cow preparatory to be
off to brother Garretson's meeting that day, to be held at a neighbor's.
With Mr. Blankenship to feed his cow went his dog, which ran a
raccoon up a tree, which Mr. Blankenship captured and took to his house, stripped
off its hide, and while engaged in stretching the same on the side of his cabin
there rode by in the direction of where Mr. Garretson was to hold his meeting a
Mr. Elijah Peters, a Magistrate of the County. Mr. Blankenship hurried up his work, got his breakfast, took a shave and
put off for the meeting. Mr. Garretson's subject for the occasion, was the violation of the Sabbath, working on
Sunday; going "coon hunting." Mr. Blankenship squirmed and twisted as the speaker earnestly told his
hearers of these various Sunday violations till finally Mr. Blankenship being impressed with the thought that Squire Peters had
told Mr. Garretson that he had been coon hunting on Sunday, determined that he
would stand the scourging no longer, and rising from his seat and addressing
the speaker said, "Brother Garretson, who told you I went coon hunting on
Sunday?" To which Garretson replied: "My Lord and
Master," whereupon Mr. Blankenship said in a loud voice: "Well Brother
Garretson if Squire Elijah Peters is your Lord and Master, mark my name off of
your book.
