     "In the name of God Amen I Hudson Blankenship of the County of Campbell
and state of Virginia being of perfect mind of body and memory thanks be to
God calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is
appointed for all men once to die do make and ordain this my last will and
testament, that is to say principally and first of all I recommend my soul
into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the
earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my
executors:  I give demise and dispose of my estate in the following manner
and form:  first I give to my beloved wife, Edy Balnkenship, one hundred
acres of land to include the house and plantation where I now live and the
whole of my household and kitchen furniture also my stock of Horses, cattle,
hogs, and sheep and with my plantation utensils.  Also all the money I have
due either in notes or account to have and to hold so long as she the Edy
Blankenship my wife, shall live and after her decease to be equally divided
between my Children.  Also I give the balance of my tract of land not given
to my wife to my son, Henry Blankenship, to him and his heirs forever. 
Lastly I constitute and appoint Thomas Cook and Archibald Blankenship my
executors to this my last will and testament.
     In witness I have set my hand and seal this eighteenth day of December
Eighteen hundred twelve."

Several years ago I had occasion to read the Chesterfield Co. Order Books page by page, looking for some data on several of my families there. In the process I made notes on all of the court orders for support of illegitimate children from the period 1804-1834.

This is the list. Keep in mind that these were only the ones who made it to Court, usually because the mother was unable to support the child without help or because the father was about to be married to another woman. If these children appeared in later court records, their surname would have been that of their mother. Unfortunately, except for two, the original orders did not give the child's age, sex, or first name.

“The original of this Land Warrant in old English handwriting is available for downloading in TIFF format from the Library of Virginia. It's assumed that this Land office Treasury Warrant was granted for military service during the War of Revolution against England. Such warrants were issued in lieu of salary or compensation. The spelling here is Blankingship. One assumes it is simply a variation of the name Blankinship.

James Barbour Esquire, Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia:
To all whom these presents shall come, Greeting know ye, that by virtue of a Land Office Treasure Warrant No. 4577 (offered) this 8th of December 1809, there is granted by the said Commonwealth unto Hillary Blankingnship and Arthur Blankingnship, a certain parcel of Land containing 52 acres by survey bearing date the first day of March 1811 situated in the County of Giles on the east side of New River and on the north side of Big Stony Creek in the Big Spring Hollow and bounded as followeth:
BEGINNING at a sugar tree and Chestnut .... the big spring thence north seventy five degrees west forty six poles to a popular and chestnut on the top of a ridge north five and one half degrees east eighty poles to a red oak, black oak and [green?] on the side of the hill, north twenty five degrees east eighty four poles [or....ing the spring to??] a beach, south seventy eight and a half degrees east forty five poles to a white oak, gum and two dogwoods in the gap of a ridge and thence south fourteen degrees, west one hundred and sixty five poles to the beginning.
