John W. Blankinship
was born in North Carolina, on March I, 1819. His parents lived in that state,
being tillers of the soil, and there they sleep at the present time. Wtien our subject had reached the age of twenty he started for
himself in the industries of life. He was married in his native state and there
gave himself to farming for a time and then removed to Missouri, just before
the war, settling in the southern part of the state. When hostilities
broke out he was among the first to offer his
services in behalf of the government, enlisting in Company K, Thirty-sixth
Missouri. He served with faithfulness and valor until the close of the strife
and then was rewarded by the government in receiving a pension until the time
of his death. After the close of the war he went to Linn county,
Kansas, where his wife died. There also on May 28, 1875, the marriage of our
subject and Sarah (Lewellen) Ramsey occurred. Mrs. Blankinship was born' in Indiana on July 7, 1846,
being the daughter of Elijah and Nancy (Henderson) Lewellen.
Our subject and family came to this county in 1882, in company with Mr. Lewellen, and he homesteaded the home place, two and
one-half miles east from Enterprise, also taking a pre-emption, making the
total holding one-half section. He engaged in farming and stock raising until July 9, 1885,
when the angel of death seized him» and he rested from his toils. His remains
sleep quietly in the Enterprise cemetery. Mrs. Blankinship
has borne six children, two, Isaac and John Ramsey, to her first husband, and four,
Clara, Viola, Bessie, Arthur, deceased,, to the subject of this sketch.
Nobly did' the widow take up the added burdens of life and has steadily pursued
her way since that time, showing excellent wisdom and executive force in
handling her estate. She resides there at the present time and leases the land
to tillers of the soil. Her father was a native of Kentucky and the mother of
Indiana. Mr. Lewellen came to this country in 1882,
having previously been a pioneer in Iowa, Missouri and Kansas. He homesteaded
the place now owned by John Endicott and was a well known
and respected citizen of Wallowa county. On September 7,
1899, he was called from the affairs of this life to the world beyond, and his
remains were buried in the Prairie Creek cemetery. Mrs. Blankinship is a member of the denomination known as
Followers of Christ. She is an exemplary woman, of gracious personality and has
the confidence and esteem of all the community.

John A. Endicott As the older men step aside from the excellent
work that they have accomplished in this western country, there are younger
ones with fresh vigor and commendable zeal to take up the burdens and prosecute
the industries in a manner becoming the foundations that have been laid deep
and wide by the worthy pioneers. To this class of younger men belongs the
subject of this article, and we are pleased to record concerning him that he
has manifested abilities that have stamped him as one of the strong stockmen of
the county and able to handle successfully the enterprises that he has in hand,
while he has demeaned himself with wisdom and energy quite becoming him, as
also is the integrity and uprightness that characterize his entire walk.
John R. was born in Dallas county,
Missouri, on August 6, 1872, being the son of Wr. C.
and Mary J. (Bass) Endicott, natives, respectively, of Indiana and Tennessee.
The father was one of the noble men who fought for freedom and good government
in the time of the Rebellion, enlisting in the Tenth Illinois, under Sherman,
whom he accompanied on the famous march to the sea. When the was was done, and not
until then, did he lay down the weapons and retire to private life. In 1878 the
entire family came to Union county, the parents being pioneers of that section.
At the age of sixteen our subject started the battle of life for himself,
working first for his father and for others in the vicinity. In 1893 he came to
Wallowa county and sought out a homestead for himself.
He gave himself to the subduing and cultivation of this for a period and then bought
his present place, which is five miles north from Joseph. The first quarter
section of this farm he purchased from Mr. E. Lewellen,
grandfather to the wife of our subject. To the original purchase he has added
until he now owns four hundred acres of valuable land. Mr. Endicott is in
partnership with his brother in the sheep business and has made a "good
success of the enterprise.
Mr. Endicott married Miss Clara, daughter of John and, Sarah
Blankinship, whose names
appear in another portion of the volume, on December 22, 1897, and to this
happy union there have been born the following issue, Goldy
and Ada. Mr. Endicott is a member of the K. O. T. M., Tent No. 35, of Joseph. Mrs.
Endicott is a member of the Christian church and is a hearty supporter of the
faith, both by precept and practice, while in all of their ways Mr. and Mrs.
Endicott have -so demeaned themselves that they are highly esteemed in the
neighborhood and by all.
