Blankenship, Jane R.

Jane R. Jenkins, a retired nursing assistant, died Wednesday of a stroke at Tri-State Memorial Hospital at Clarkston. She was 85. She was born Dec. 16, 1908, at Morton, Wash., to Harrison and Dulcelia Bailey Blankenship.

When she was a young child the family moved to the Grangeville-Mount Idaho area. She attended Rocky Point School near Grangeville through the eighth grade. She married Mark T. Jenkins Nov. 8, 1933, at Grangeville. In 1942 the family moved to Stites, Idaho, where he worked for the Camas Prairie Railroad. They moved to Clarkston in 1951. Later that same year she began her career as a nursing assistant at Rest Haven Nursing Home, where she worked until her retirement in the early 1970s. Her husband died in 1985. She was a member of the Valley Christian Center. She enjoyed gardening, needle work, family gatherings and watching wrestling and demolition derbies. She especially enjoyed working with the elderly.

She is survived by six daughters, Mildred Galles of Clarkston, Melba Williams of Lewiston, Maureen Callahan of Clarkston, Mary Forgey of Ellensburg, Wash., Mable Minor of Kittitas, Wash., Margaret Whybark of Lewiston; and one brother, Clarence Blankenship of Stites; 19 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. A baby daughter, Barbara Louise, and 11 brothers and sisters died previously.

Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. today at Mountain View Funeral Home at Lewiston. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Mountain View with the Rev. Dennis Noble of the Valley Christian Center officiating.

Judy L. Caldwell Kain, 57, who was raised in Asotin, died here Friday after a long battle with liver disease. She was born Jan. 21, 1941, in Clarkston to Erby and Maxine McCowan Blankenship .

She was raised in Asotin. She worked for Joe's Round-Up in Clarkston for many years. She married Wendall Caldwell at Clarkston in 1955. They later divorced. In 1977 she married Bernie Kain at Clarkston. They then moved to Kennewick where she enjoyed driving a school bus for the Kennewick School District.

She is survived by her husband at their Kennewick home; two daughters, Debbie Brownell of Clarkston and Laurie Brasher of Kennewick; two sons, Rick Caldwell of Lewiston and Scott Caldwell of Asotin; a stepdaughter, Toni Weatherwax of Spokane; her mother and father at Clarkston; sister Linda Winroth of Asotin; a brother, Ron Blankenship of Las Vegas, Nev.; and 12 grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday at Merchant Funeral Home at Clarkston. Burial will follow at Clarkston Vineyard Cemetery.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Gardens Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, Wash., for Roy H. Carnell, who died Tuesday from complications because of age. He was 87.

Mr. Carnell was born Sept. 21, 1902, in Lauderdale County in Tennessee. He had been a resident of Vancouver for the past 35 years and worked in paper bag production for Crown-Zellerbach before his retirement.

Mr. Carnell is survived by three sons, Billy G. of Yakima, Norman G. of Bellevue, Wash., and Richard W. of Indianapolis; six daughters, Ruby D. Blankenship and H. LaVerne Mason, both of Washougal, Wash., Betty F. Larsen of Portland, Fay Leddy of Hood River and Peggy D. Stark of Seattle. He had 27 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Interment will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery

Margaret Brown, 77, Bremerton died March 5, 1999, at her home.
She was born Sept. 8, 1921, in Bremerton to Albert and Vivian Blankenship. She graduated from Bremerton High in 1940 and lived in the Bremerton area most of her life.

She is survived by two sons, Steven Swanson of Redmond and William Swanson of Portland; two daughters, Judith Carter and Kristine Higgs, both of Bremerton; 10 grandchildren, Michael Swanson and Melissa Dunford, both of North Bend, Mark Swanson and Ami Carter, both of Seattle, Jerry Swanson of Henderson, Nev., Veronica Swanson of Gaston, Ore., and Juli Williams and Joshua, Gabe and Jake Higgs, all of Bremerton; and seven great-grandchildren. Her husband, James Brown, preceded her in death.

She requested no service, but there will be a gathering for family and friends at the home of Bill and Judi Carter, 2675 NE John Carlson Road, Bremerton, at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Cheney United Methodist Church with burial at Washtucna (Wash.) Cemetery. Mrs. Blomgren, who died Monday, was born in Othello, Wash. She received a teaching certificate from Washington State College and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She had lived in Edwall for 53 years and was a homemaker. She was a 50-year member of the Waukon Grange and Edwall Methodist Church. Her husband, Walter Blomgren, died in 1989.

Mrs. Blomgren is survived by two sons, Stephen Blomgren of Cheney and David Blomgren of Edwall; one brother, Dwayne Blankenship of Washtucna; three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Robert Alex Shinn, a retired general contractor and former Asotin County commissioner, died at Deaconess Medical Center here Monday following heart surgery. He was 70. He was born May 23, 1927, in Doumecq Plains, Idaho, to Arleen and Joe Shinn.

He attended area schools and graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1944. Following high school he spent two years in the Naval Air Corps, after which he attended Lewiston Normal School and Gonzaga University. He married Joan Donnelly July 20, 1946, at Renton, Wash. He was a concrete contractor, branch manager for Lewiston Premix and general superintendent for Craft Wall. He also served as president of the Homebuilders Association. He spent the latter years of his career working with his twin sons, Patrick and Michael, in Shinn Construction. From 1970 to 1974 he served as Asotin County commissioner. He was part of a delegation to Washington, D.C., to initiate the construction of Southway Bridge. He is believed to be the first local resident to be nominated for president of the National County Commissioner Association. He enjoyed bird hunting and competitive shooting at the Lewiston Gun Club and other area clubs. He acted as a guide for "Sports Illustrated" magazine and was dubbed "Mr. Chukar of the Valley." He was past president of the Lewiston Gun Club.

He is survived by his wife; three sons, Brian Shinn of Clarkston, Patrick Shinn of Woodland Hills, Calif., and Michael Shinn of Burbank, Calif.; three daughters, Sandra Shinn of Longmont, Colo., Debra Arnick of Castle Rock, Colo., and Dana Macksoud of Pasadena, Calif.; two sisters, Norma Blankenship of Lynden, Wash., and Bea Rich of Issaquah; and 13 grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place. At his request there will be no service.

Service for Vina V. Elliott, 78, is planned for 2 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Greenwood Memorial Terrace. Mrs. Elliott, a 47-year Spokane resident, died Tuesday. She was born in Leland, Idaho. She worked as a waitress. Mrs. Elliott was a member of the Grad's Club. Her husband, Welden Elliott, died in 1993.

Survivors include a brother, Austin Blankenship of Spokane.
