Asotin
2019, Asotin Co., WA, Obituary
Lewiston Tribune (ID) - October 25, 2019
Eugene "Gene" Walter Thiessen was born June 10, 1941 at
St. Joseph's Hospital in Lewiston to Oscar and Melba Thiessen. He passed away
on Friday, Oct. 18, 2019.
From a very early age, Gene was helping on the family farm in
Tammany. He attended Tammany Grade School for seven years and went on to
graduate from Lewiston High School in May 1959. Gene attended both the
University of Idaho and Lewis-Clark Normal (now Lewis-Clark State College)
before joining the Air National Guard in 1963. Soon, however, Gene's passion
for livestock and the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley was calling, and he began his
lifelong career as a cattleman. In 1971, Gene moved to the cattle ranch along
Asotin Creek that he would call home for the remainder of his life. At that
time, Gene was married to Linda Jo Craven Shumaker, who had two daughters,
Cheri and Lorrie. They welcomed a baby boy to the family, Dan Ray Thiessen,
born July 4, 1972. Gene and Jo divorced in 1976, and Gene continued to live at
the Asotin Creek ranch and raise his energetic boy around the everyday workings
of an active cattle ranch. Gene was active in the community as a longtime
member and former president of the Asotin County Cattlemen's Association.
Gene married the love of his life, Judy Roark Colton, the Saturday after Thanksgiving in 1978.
Gene and Judy met over drinks in Lewiston and fell in love quickly. Judy took
to the ranch life immediately and supported Gene's hard work while running her
own appraisal company. Judy had two daughters, Bonny and Cathy. He loved spending time with his family and many friends who were
as good as family, the Apple Dumpling Gang. Gene had a
full life, building upon his family's agricultural
roots and growing a ranch and family with a lot of hard work and love.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents; his
wife, Judy; and his daughter, Bonny Lee Colton.
He is survived by son Dan and daughter Cathy; Dan's wife, Melissa,
and children Huck Harrison, Augustus Thiessen and Otto Thiessen; Cathy's son, Seth Blankenship; Bonny's children, McKinzie
Turner, Colton Therrian, Molly Peppler
and Murphy Therrian; and five great-grandchildren.
Gene's wishes were for no funeral, but he was always up for a good
time over food and drinks with friends. Come join us for a party in his honor
from 4-7 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Asotin County Fairgrounds Bennett Building; bring
along a dish or dessert to share, along with all of your fun stories to tell.

Hartley Lee “Swede” Blankenship, of Chelan, WA,
passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2017, peacefully at home with his family.
Swede was born to William “Noah” Blankenship and Gretta
Workman on September 18, 1928, in Chehalis, WA.
He attended school and graduated from Mossyrock High School. Swede was proud to have served in
the Marine Corps during WWII and the Korean War. He worked on the second
Narrows Bridge and did road construction for Goodfellow
Brothers. He retired as permanent staff with Douglas County PUD at
Wells Dam.
Swede was a man of few words and when he
talked, you listened. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with those who wanted to
learn, whether it be canning, gardening, or waterskiing. He was an avid
gardener! Swede loved his dahlias. In his personal directions on planting them,
he made a note that a happy dahlia is one that is talked to! His garden had a
wonderful bounty of various fruits and vegetables. He kept everyone he knew
well stocked with fresh produce. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and cooking. Swede
loved to prepare a menu for those visiting. No one ever left hungry and never
without dessert!
Swede was very involved in fraternal
organizations. He was a 33rd degree Mason, active in Chelan Valley Lodge, the
El Katif Shriners, Eastern Star, Amaranth and the
Chelan Senior Center.
Swede married Dayle
Fletcher in 1946 and had two children, Lee and Jana. He was married to Betty
Lou Gardner until her passing in 2005. In August 2006, he married Barbara Rist. It was said that whenever Swede and Barb were

they shared.

The Chronicle, (Centralia, WA) - September 19, 2017
Hartley Lee "Swede" Blankenship, 88, a native son of Chehalis and Mossyrock, passed away Aug. 2, 2017. Sometime during his
illness, a circa 1930-1940 vintage green Evinrude 2
HP outboard motor belonging to his wife, Barb, was stolen from the family home
garage and replaced with a Johnson 3 HP outboard.
I would ask if anyone knows of such an outboard showing up in your
area to contact the Chelan County Sheriff's Office at 509-667-6851. It can also
be returned with no questions asked.
This outboard has been Barb's for many years and had been restored
for Swede by her former husband who was a marine mechanic.

Lowell Christopher Blankenship was born in 1963
in Bremerton, WA, and passed away peacefully on April 18, 2019, at his home in
Port Orchard, WA.
After a tour in the Air Force as an
electronic maintenance specialist and a variety of other jobs, Lowell graduated
as an apprentice in June, 1992. As a mechanic in the shipfitter
shop, Lowell specialized in missile compartment modifications and battery changeouts, receiving several accommodations for his
exemplary work. He progressed in his career and was promoted to shipfitter foreman, the position he held when he passed.
Lowell was an avid gamer, playing and
collecting almost every kind of board and military game. He invented some games
and made modifications to many others that were
accepted. He tested games for his fellow players. He even went so far as to
paint his own miniature soldiers. He would tell you the tactics needed for
Napoleon to win Waterloo.
His friends and family saw him as
generous, thoughtful, imaginative, loyal and pragmatic. If a friend could not
afford to take a sick pet to the vet, Lowell would pay the bill. He grubstaked
new game developers.
Lowell enjoyed his family and their
varied outings, including the annual trip to Cannon Beach to play in the sand
and surf. One highlight he relished was the building of a cardboard boat to
sail out to sea and burn in a Viking “funeral”.
He was preceded in death by his by his mother,
Sharon
Kay (Main) Blankenship.
He is survived by his father Gary and step mother
Chris of Bremerton, brother, Adam of Tacoma; sister, Ellen, of Cannon
Beach, OR, and four nieces and nephews, Ben, Josh, Ana, and Kerry.
There will be no public services, as
Lowell would have “hated” that…however the family will send him off in a
semi-authentic Viking funeral sometime in the near future.

Beulah LaVonne Shaner
July 29, 1935 February 15, 2018 Beulah Shaner was
born Beulah Blankenship to parents Ada and Henry Blankenship on July 29, 1935, in Ajlune, Washington.
She attended Mossyrock High School where
she participated in numerous activities including sports, cheerleading,
yearbook, and school events planning. After graduating in 1953, Boo (as she was
known) represented Mossyrock High as a Princess of
the Southwest Washington Fair in Chehalis/Centralia, touring and giving
speeches to the local communities.
After completing her tenure in August, Beulah married Robert Daniel
Shaner (Bob) on September 26, 1953, in Mossyrock, Washington. Although she aspired to be a
physical education teacher and took general education courses at Eastern
Washington University in Cheney, Washington, Boo worked full-time to help put
Bob through college. When Bob graduated from Eastern in 1957, Bob and Boo moved
to Randle, Washington, where Beulah worked as a secretary to the principal
while Bob taught at White Pass High School. In 1962, Boo moved to Tumwater,
Washington, where Bob took a teaching position at Tumwater High School. Boo
worked at Sunset Life Insurance Company for a few years before taking a job at
Tumwater Middle School, where she worked until her retirement in 1996.
Generations of students at Tumwater Middle School knew that they had an
advocate in the Principal's office because "Mrs. Shaner"
gave consistent guidance and support to every child who stood at her counter.
Active in her community, Beulah was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, the
Tumwater Booster Club, and the United Methodist Church. In many respects, Boo Shaner embodied the generosity, warmth, and hometown
goodness of Tumwater.
Leaving behind a loving legacy, Beulah will be greatly missed by
her children: Kim Tangherlini (Vince), Kevin Shaner (Mary), Kyle T. Shaner
(Cindy), and Kraig Shaner (Jenifer); cherished
grandchildren Dr. Sammy Jo Abair (David), Capt. Kyle
R. Shaner (Marni), Luke Shaner,
Vinny Tangherlini, Hunter Shaner,
Robert Tangherlini, and Sydney Shaner.
She is survived by two beloved siblings
Lon Blankenship (Patricia) and Sherri Rash (Wayne), numerous nieces and nephews and grand-nieces and
grand-nephews, and precious friends, including Norm Wisnera
life-long friend who became her constant companion and champion supporting her
through her final illness.
For all who loved her, Beulah (Boo, Mama, Mom, Grandma, Nana, Booie, Aunt Boo, Mrs. Shaner)
wove a tapestry of strength, wisdom, beauty, dignity, joy, laughter,
commitment, loyalty, faith, generosity, kindness, and love with which she
covered and protected her family and friends and which remains as a memory of a
glorious life well-lived.
Memorial Service will be held Sat. March 3, 11:00 AM at Mills and
