+2018, Poynette, Columbia Co., WI, Obituary

Daily Register (Portage, WI) - March 29, 2018

Carl Jean Hilgenberg entered his eternal journey in his own bed at the family home in Poynette on March 27, 2018, when he passed away after a long illness at the age of 94 years. Carl was born January 17, 1924, in Kaukauna, the first child of Charles William and Jennette (McIntyre) Hilgenberg.

He lived in Kaukauna until he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison after graduating from high school. In February 1943, he was compelled to join the Army Air Force and served for three years on many bases throughout the states, gaining college credits at several universities along the way. He was honorably discharged February 1946. After his discharge, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

On January 20, 1945, he married Marian "Dood" Seymour in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and together they were blessed with seven children: Carla Peterson, Sue (Larry) Aagaard, Kay DeWaide, Jean Hilgenberg, Sara Hilgenberg (deceased), Chuck (Cindra) Hilgenberg and Amy (Jeffrey) Grinde. They raised their family and lived for many years in Poynette. Carl served on the Poynette Village Board in the 1960s, '70s and '80s. He worked as a manager in a dairy plant, making ice cream mix until that shop closed in the late '60s. He continued working as a manager with canning factories in Poynette, Waunakee and Sun Prairie. Dood, his wife of 35 years, passed away from heart failure at the age of 55 years in March 1981.

Carl was fortunate to find love and companionship for the second time and on September 26, 1981, he married Virginia "Ginna" Karls in Arlington. Ginna's five children were welcomed into his family: Michael (Krysann) Karls, Daniel (Patty) Karls, Timothy (Brenda) Karls, Beverly (Tom) Blankenship and Christopher (Cyndy) Karls. Carl and Ginna made their family home in Poynette and celebrated 36 years of marriage last year.

Carl will be sadly missed by all who love him. He was a kind, quiet man, except for the occasional outburst. He had a fine sense of humor and he liked to be working on something constantly. He loved his garden, growing a huge bounty of vegetables each summer until his 92nd year. He loved his white pigeons and plethora of chickens.

Each fall, along with Ginna, he gathered hickory nuts and spent the winter cracking them and harvesting the nut meats. He was an avid reader up until a few years ago and still subscribed to three newspapers, which he read daily. Carl volunteered with Ginna at the Poynette Food Pantry; he worked at the polls; he enjoyed watching the wildlife in his large yard: birds of all kinds, squirrels, rabbits, deer meandering past and the occasional raccoon and opossum.

Carl was an excellent cook, loved good food and especially daughter Jean's lemon meringue pie. He liked to have coffee and reminisce with old stories from when he was a child catching stray pigeons under bridge rafters in Kaukauna, going to dances in Wrightstown and ushering at the movie theater for twenty-five cents a week when he was in school.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William and Jennette Hilgenberg, his wife, Dood Hilgenberg; his daughter, Sara Hilgenberg and Ginna's infant daughter, Judy; his infant granddaughter, Kerry Frye; his sister, Ann Heindel; brothers-in-law, Harold Bohne and Dick Cooley; and sister-in-law, Patricia Cooley.

Carl is survived by his wife, Ginna; his sisters, Claire Schneider, Kaukauna, and Sally Tarala, Neenah; his brothers-in-law, Duane Heindel, Kaukauna, and Buck (Mary Anne) Bohne; his sister-in-law, Jackie Bohne; his children, Carla Peterson, Verona, Sue Aagaard, Tucson, Arizona, Kay DeWaide, Poynette, Jean Hilgenberg, Poynette, Chuck Hilgenberg, DeForest, and Amy Grinde, Ripon; his stepchildren, Michael Karls, Marshall, Daniel Karls, Marshall, Timothy Karls, Cottage Grove, Beverly Blankenship, Madison, and Christopher Karls, Waterloo; nieces, nephews, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., on Monday, April 2, 2018, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Poynette, with Fr. Balaraju Eturi and Fr. Ray Dischler presiding. Military honors will be provided by the Poynette Area Veterans Honor Guard following the service. Inurnment will be private.

James Francis "Jim" Schmitt passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Sept. 26, 2016. He was born on Sept. 13, 1954, the son of Donald and Shirley (Roessler) Schmitt.

He graduated from Marshall High School. Following high school, Jim attended UW-Madison, earning a degree in mechanical engineering. Alice was born June 11, 1923 near Sidney Michigan. She graduated from Greenville High School in 1941. Alice was the oldest of the five "Hansen girls" of Sidney Road. Some of the happiest times throughout her life were when she could spend time with one or more of her sisters. For much of the 1940's she worked at the First State Bank of Greenville. They enjoyed traveling (Alice more than Bob), family get-togethers, playing cards with friends and neighbors and delivering Meals on Wheels. She was always proud of the "nice house Bob built with his own hands" in which they lived for nearly fifty years.

Alice was a charter member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville MI, remaining an active member until that church closed and merged with St. Paul Lutheran Church. Alice was proud of her Danish Heritage, all four of her grandparents emigrated from Denmark. She worked for years in the Trinity food booth turning aebleskiver's dressed in her old-time Danish costume. Alice made many Danish pastries to sell at that booth as well as to share with family and friends. She was once featured in a Grand Rapids Press article where she talked about her pastries and provided the recipe and instructions on how to make them.

Survivors include one son, Dewey (Cheryl) Allen, Wausau WI; one daughter Mary (Keith) Paine, Olathe, KS; granddaughters Alison (Ben) Blankenship, Little Elm TX and Monica (Paul Wagner) Allen, Eagan, MN and great-grandchildren Samuel "Sam" and Maggie Blankenship and Lily and Liam Wagner. Washburn

2012, Minong, Washburn Co., WI, Obituary

Published in Idaho Statesman on October 19, 2012

Kenneth Eugene Hukill was born on November 27, 1920 to Elsie Faye and Homer A. Hukill in Grand River, Iowa. He died on September 11, 2012 in Minong, Wisconsin with his wife Joan, daughter Caroline, and faithful dog Missy by his side.

Ken had four siblings; Dennis Dean Hukill Sr., Mildred Miller, Betty Jean Miller, and David Hukill. He worked hard to help his family during the depression while attending school as well. He was part of the Stanberry High School graduating class of 1938 in Stanberry, Missouri. After graduation, he married Daisy Mae Smith and they soon relocated to Idaho, driving across the country in an old Model A Ford.

Ken started a job with the Union Pacific Railroad in Pocatello, Idaho. He enlisted in the Navy to serve his country during World War II. He was a Water Tender on a refueling tanker called the U.S.S. Escambia, stationed in Pearl Harbor from January 1944 through December 1945. He was honorably discharged from the Navy as a Petty Officer Second Class and returned to Idaho and his job with the railroad. Union Pacific relocated him to Glenns Ferry, Idaho where he bought a small farm and spent countless hours railroading, farming, and raising his family of four daughters; Sharon, Caroline, Kenny and Linda. Ken lived in the Glenns Ferry area for twenty five years but lost his love for railroading when the mighty steam engines were retired.

He was divorced from Daisy He quit the railroad and moved to Moyie Springs, Idaho where he bought a dairy farm and started a new career with his new wife Marilyn and children. He had only operated the dairy farm for a short time when the fire danger became extreme everywhere in the west. The Forest Service plead for help. Ken answered the call which led to a permanent job with the Forest Service for the next twenty five years.

Once again Ken's marriage ended; but while he was working at Sylvanite Ranger Station he met his wife, Joan. They spent 35 years together. Ken retired in 1985 from the Forest Service in Wise River, Montana and moved to Montpelier, Idaho to be closer to family. He bought another small farm and enjoyed raising cattle, cutting wood, being retired, and doing all the things he always thought he should have done yesterday. In 1994, he made the decision to return to his boyhood home of Missouri where he bought some property and lived for a short time. Later he moved to Minong, Wisconsin to be with his wife, Joan.

Ken made many friends in all the different places he lived and will be remembered by many as one of the hardest working people they ever knew. He loved to work but he also knew how to have fun. He never missed a family wedding or graduation. He loved family gatherings, especially Thanksgiving which often fell on his birthday so it was a double celebration and a chance to have his favorite lemon meringue pie.

Ken is survived by his wife Joan; daughters Sharon Kay Biersner, Caroline Faye Larsen, Kenny, Jean Blankenship of Boise, Idaho and Linda Sue Fleming of Phoenix, Arizona; stephchildren: Robin Couch (Jim) Ward, Randy (Stormy) Couch, Blake (Sandy) Couch, Vera (Mark) Smith, Kenneth McLeod, Charles (Pat) McLeod, Mary LcLeod, and Judi (Greg) Williams; sisters Mildred (Clyde) Hulet of McFall, Missouri, Betty Jean Smith of Spokane, Washington and brother David Hukill of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Gary (Tami) McKeeth, Lori McKeeth (Mike) Ebert, William (Stacy) Larsen, Tamera Larsen Wahl (Ron) Lewno, Robert Plane, Paula Plane Brown, and John Plane; great grandchildren: Brandi (Klimko) Johnson, Joshua Kenneth Larsen, Samantha Larsen, Zach Wahl, Jordan Wahl, Heather (McKeeth) Walker, Kimberlee (McKeeth) Remington, Corbin McKeeth, Annalyse (McKeeth) Sanders, McKenzie McKeeth, Savannah McKeeth, Sarah Ebert, Nitaha Griffin, Kendra Benson, Aaron Clayton, several great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, He was preceded in death by his mother, father, brother Dennis, grandsons Anthony Plane and Devin Fleming, and his beloved Border Collie Happy.

A military graveside service will be held in Troy, Montana, to be announced at a later date.

Franklin C. Bales, 91, of West Bend, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, at his home surrounded by his family. Franklin was born Feb. 14, 1927, Valentine's Day. This was appropriate since there was great love shown by Franklin for each of the family members in his very large extended family and he was loved by each family member as well.

The greatest love was for his wife of 70 years, Margaret. This special 70th anniversary on Sept. 25, 2018, was honored with an event at the family farm attended by more than 40 family members. This was the dairy farm that Franklin was born on, grew up on, worked as a dairy farm and continued to live on in retirement until he passed away. The farm will be a century farm next year being in the Bales family for 100 years.

Franklin will always be known for his happy laugh, storytelling, willing ness to help anyone no matter how busy farm life kept him, being a trusted advisor and always leading by example on how to live a good Christian life. But most of all Franklin was devoted to Margaret and as a team they grew more than crops and produced more than milk on their beloved family farm. They grew and produced a strong family as well. Franklin and Margaret never missed Sunday Mass until age prevented travel. Mealtime prayers, evening rosary, while holding hands and prayers throughout the day exemplified their devout faith. Over the years extensive travel was made throughout the country Sheepshead was a passion of his and Franklin and Margaret had several groups of friends they played with over the years. Franklin has now played his last hand but we are sure that if sheepshead is played in heaven, he is already dealing out the cards. Well into his 80s, Franklin volunteered at the Samaritan Health Center, St. Frances Cabrini and Meals on Wheels.
